]]>The general term “the military” is tossed around daily by people who don’t understand the context, procedures, or separations of power within the armed forces. While the presence of military branches is always felt, many Americans don’t know the basics of the branches, their role in conflict, and their functions. We’ve put together a list of 10 questions and basic facts many Americans don’t know about the Armed Forces.
©Randy Runtsch/Shutterstock.com
There are six branches of the United States military. Each one plays a unique role in the nation’s security, intelligence, and force. The Army is responsible for ground combat and is the oldest and largest branch of the military. The Navy provides runways for aircraft flying at sea, allowing military plans a place to refuel and transfer goods. It also protects waterways. The Coast Guard is a federal law enforcement agency that leads search and rescue missions, secures waterways and enforces laws at sea. The Air Force’s main job is to defend the country through the exploitation of space and air. The Marine Corps specializes in amphibious military operations. The newly organized Space Force trains, equips, and organizes space forces to protect allied and US interests in space.
The National Guard is also part of the military and consists of the Air National Guard and the Amy National Guard. These forces support humanitarian efforts, and combat missions, fulfill homeland security operations, and handle domestic emergencies.

The Navy and Coast Guard are two different branches of the military and play two different roles within the forces. They are vastly different sizes, differ in distinct core operations, and exist in different geographic scopes.
The Coast Guard protects ports, waterways, and shorelines and serves as first responders on the water. When you think of someone lost at sea, it’s the Coast Guard who sets out to find them. It’s not a part of the Department of Defense but is a member of the United States Armed Forces. Members of the Coast Guard are separated into six distinct operational focuses: defense operations, security operations, transportation systems management, safety, and marine environmental protection, first response, and law enforcement.
The Navy plays a more proactive, protective role in protecting US interests throughout the world. Their focus is defending US allies, protecting things in the water that threaten the country and in turn, increase economic prosperity. They defend sea lanes, keep waterways open so goods can be transferred from one country to another. They prevent drug tracking and piracy and provide humanitarian assistance when needed. They also coordinate and operate telecommunications systems on the water.

Most of the branches of the United States military have both an active duty and a reserve branch, but they are not the same. Active duty service members work for the military full-time. They often live on military bases and can be deployed whenever necessary. They receive benefits and full-time pay.
Reserve duty is part-time service in the military, sort of like a part-time job. They receive partial benefits and part-time pay. Most keep a civilian job and have military training somewhere close to where they live. Reserve duty members must participate in training drills two weeks each year and one weekend a month. The purpose of a reserve component is to make sure the US military has service people trained and ready to go at any time. Members of the reserve can be called to fill positions overseas and stateside when needed.

A commanding officer has many jobs within their branch of the military. They are responsible for leading their unit, establishing policies, developing plans, inspecting, maintaining their unit’s economy, and providing technical guidance. They also function as an example of how they want their unit to conduct itself. They develop and create plans to finish missions and inspect the unit to ensure it’s operating efficiently. A commanding officer is also in charge of discipline and making changes when necessary.

Deployment by definition in the dictionary is the act or movement of deploying or the state of being deployed. This refers to military equipment or personnel put into positions for a particular purpose or use. Military deployment is the movement of armed forces.
Deployment can be outside the country and may move a servicemember to places out the continental United States. There are times when troops are deployed to enter a combat zone. Most deployments last between 90 days and 15 months, although every situation is unique.

The military has dedicated cyber units that help boost cybersecurity efforts. They play a large role in protecting the US from cyber threats by monitoring for attacks, responding to cyber incidences on military systems, and performing assessments of the system’s vulnerability. There are special cyber units like the U.S. Army Cyber Command and others that hold high-security clearance and play a huge part in keeping the country safe from a cyber attack.

This is a military court that tries civilians or members of enemy forces who are charged with national security times during a war. They are different from court-martials and don’t operate within the same criminal and civil proceedings of most crimes. They are often used when civil courts are unsuitable or unavailable and are based on charges brought by military authorities rather than law enforcement. Military officers then do the judging and sentencing.
You may have also heard the term court-martial. This is similar to a criminal trial, but it’s done within the military. Any offenses against military law are handled in a court-martial. There are three types: general, special and summary. The military operates under different rules of evidence and the jury doesn’t have to have a unanimous verdict to convict, unless the death penalty is on the table.

When a servicemember leaves the military, an honorable discharge is the highest ranking they can receive. This means that they followed the rules, completed their duties and their conduct never reflected badly on their unit. To obtain an honorable discharge, they must receive a rating of anywhere from good to excellent during their service. They must maintain military standards of discipline, duty, performance, and conduct. It’s also required that they complete their time commitment or enlistment.
A dishonorable discharge is a punitive one that is handed down after a court-martial if the servicemember is convicted of certain offenses. These offenses include being drunk on duty, sexual assault, desertion, fraud, and murder. A dishonorable discharge is given when the servicemember’s actions harmed the military’s integrity and effectiveness.

The Medal of Honor is the most distinguished decoration that the government awards to servicemembers. In the name of Congress, the President of the United States presents the honor to military members who showed intrepidity and gallantry at the risk of their own lives.
The Medal of Honor is earned when the servicemember was engaged in battle with one of the country’s enemies or is engaged in conflict operations with an opposing foreign force. It can also be earned when service with friendly forces against a conflicting armed force. There are three versions of the Medal of Honor: one for the Air Force, one for the Army, and the same one for the Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Navy.

There are more than 420 military bases in the country. The population of the state determines the number of bases in the state. For example, Alaska has 47 bases while California has 123. The state with the second-most bases is Texas with 59. There are also military bases in 80 other countries like Cuba, Italy, Greece, Germany, and Japan.

]]>A new ride at Disney made headlines this year. On June 28, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure debuted at Walt Disney World, marking the most significant ride opening of the year at Disney Parks. However, its launch has sparked more than a little controversy.
Let’s look at the reasons behind the controversy surrounding the ride and see what riders who have experienced it are saying.
©Donna R. Theimer AIFD/Shutterstock.com
In 2023 Disney World saw a number of major ride openings including:
However, major openings in 2024 are much lighter. Disney is preparing for a very large upgrade of Animal Kingdom that will include a re-theming of Dinoland, but that project is still in the planning stages.

In January 2023, the animatronics at Splash Mountain went quiet as Disney World embarked upon a re-imagining of the ride.

Splash Mountain is based on Song of the South. The 1946 movie is a combination of live-action and animated. It has proven controversial as its characterization of plantation life is widely regarded as racist.
The movie was re-released in theaters in 1956, 1972, 1980, and 1986. However, it has never been released for home video in the United States.

Disney announced they’d be re-theming Splash Mountain in 2020, but said they’d been contemplating the ride change for five years already.
The announcement divided the Disney community as Splash Mountain is a favorite ride. Another ride that was re-themed and caused controversy was Maelstrom at Epcot. The ride previously explored Norway’s history and was replaced by a ride named Frozen Ever After.
Critics of the change lamented how Epcot was drifting from its original vision of showcasing the world’s cultures. However, there’s little doubt the new theme has made the ride more popular as lines often stretch for hours.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened at Magic Kingdom on June 28th. The ride is now themed around the 2009 animated film, The Princess and the Frog. As you can expect for a new ride, wait times have been long. Amusement park tracking site Thrill-Data was tracking wait times at nearly 2.5 hours on its opening day.
Reviews of the ride have been mixed. A common “complaint” is there’s still a lot of nostalgia tied up with the original Splash Mountain.
Here’s what Reddit users 82mt82 had to say about the ride:
“I rode it yesterday. I think the art direction was great. Everything was very vibrant and colorful. The queue was also very well done (the interior portion). I think there’s a large portion of WDW fans … that have a nostalgia bias when it comes to the parks. I’m definitely in that category.
…
Do I prefer the original splash mountain? Of course, it’s the ride I grew up with. Just like I like the original PotC theme, the Maelstrom and the original Figment. But at the end of the day, if [pillaging] or story book animals tied to an obscure film with an unfortunate characterization aren’t good for business, you get Johnny Depp on a throne and a batch of colorful, soggy beignets.”

Another complaint has been with the story of the ride. Disney didn’t follow the story for the movie The Princess and the Frog but chose to create a new story after the film. Here’s what Reddit user bigbro411 had to say:
“The ride features way less animatronics than splash did. And while the animatronics are “more impressive” they virtually say the same thing in a different way each time you encounter them.
Also the story lacks any conflict.
Some people dislike the use of screens instead of actual sets.
And finally, while the finale scene is generally liked, you are only in the scene for literally 6 seconds making it not really worth it.”

]]>What better way to end Halloween night than jumping on the couch, still in costume, pillowcase full of Nerds and Reese’s pumpkins, popcorn ball in your right hand, and 13 nights of Halloween playing on TV? From watching the Olsen twins help their aunt break free from a curse to following Marnie on her adventure through Halloweentown, there were certain Halloween movies you just couldn’t miss during the month of October.
So, pull up your TV dinner table, have Mom and Dad check your candy, and join us for this ride back through time.
To this day, Halloweentown and its sequels are some of the best Halloween movies on TV. We wish we could go to Halloweentown for a weekend, except we’ll leave out the drama caused by Kalabar. That giant pumpkin in the center of town is the best substitute for a gazebo ever, and to go for a ride with that skeleton taxi driver would be the ultimate thrill!
Remember when the Olsen twins were cute, innocent little troublemakers? Except in this movie, they were actually trying to save their great Aunt Sophia who had been cursed by her twin sister Agatha. Let’s see if you remember the rest of this one…”Double, Double Toil and Trouble; Fire burn and cauldron _________.”

Ahhh…what a classic. It was so hard to choose one character to love from this movie. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy transformed into a couple of not-so-smart Witches who would be lost without Bette Midler, who was the picture-perfect head witch that matched what you thought up in your imagination. We can’t forget about Thackery Binx the cat and Billy Butcherson, the “good zombie.” You’ll be humming the trio’s spellbinding interaction long after the movie has ended.
It’s hard to picture Christina Ricci as that little girl anymore, but she and Casper were the inseparable duo that we loved to watch every year around Halloween. This movie taught us to not be afraid of every bump in the night because it could just be your new best friend flying around your room! Casper and his friends Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie provided us with plenty of enjoyment in a storyline that could actually be quite sad and depressing. The ghost part is fun, just try not to think about how they ended up that way.
Did you know that this movie was the first Disney Channel Original Movie to be rated PG due to its frightening content? This movie was definitely scary, and maybe Disney should have saved this one for parents only! The movie’s plot was about how the Boogeyman would come from under bad kids’ beds and take them away. No wonder we have so many kids “co-sleeping” with their parents — the story lives on!
Is it a Christmas or Halloween movie? Doesn’t matter! This movie is so good you’ll want to watch it for every holiday. Set in a place coincidentally called Halloweentown, our main character Jack Skellington wanted to take over Christmas by kidnapping none other than cheery ol’ Santa Claus. This movie made for many great Halloween costumes for years to come!
I bet this one didn’t come to mind when you read the headline of this article. BUT, I bet you remember it now! Remember the friendly, funny, clumsy, and confused Mummy named Harold who was found in a basement? He became best friends with a bunch of 12-year-old kids! Throughout the movie, we watch as the kids go on a mission to get Harold back to his coffin before the end of Halloween night so he can “survive.” This one definitely stands up to the test of time.
We might be the only ones, but we expected this one to be a little bit better than it was. While it did shed light on how important family values and spending time with family are, its overall plot was a bit of a letdown. Maybe that’s because it was from the early 2000’s and the 90’s magic had died off. Nevertheless, it is still a haunting Disney “thriller” and we couldn’t miss watching it at least one day before Halloween, at the very least for the cool mansion shots and the lady in the crystal ball!
Did you know Disney has plans to make a new Tower of Terror?! It’s exciting but, a lot of times 2nd time around movies just aren’t as good! But we have high hopes for this one.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Oh, he’s not actually going to show up? We wish he would, he seems like a lot of fun. This movie had everyone singing that Jamaican song and wishing they too could conjure up the coolest dinner party ever.
Charlie Brown and his pal Linus were always on some sort of mission together to spread happiness and joy to the neighborhood. This adorable blockhead and his blankie-carrying friend had more ambition than some of us adults do these days. The poor kid usually didn’t always get what he wanted right away (ie. he got rocks while trick or treating and the other kids got candy) but he never stopped trying! No matter the Holiday, we were always learning valuable lessons from good ol’ Charlie Brown. So technically, this movie came out in 1966 but we watched it through and through to this day!
Miguel, a 12-year-old boy, is accidentally transported to the colorful Land of the Dead where he seeks his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, help to lift the ban on music that his family imposed. In the Land of the Dead he has a lot of adventures and in the process discovers who his real great-great-grandfather is.
Ten-year-old Chihiro Ogino and her parents take a shortcut and stumble across an abandoned amusement park. Here, her parents are turned into giant pigs and she must work to set them free. She is helped by a boy named Haku to eventually rescue her parents and return to the land of the living.

]]>Disney is one of the most famous creators of children’s movies and shows. The popular production company began in 1923 when Walt Disney, alongside his brother Roy, started the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. While Disney has produced several incredible movies throughout the last 100 years, there are many classic Disney movies that haven’t aged well.
In today’s society, parents are working hard to teach their children to be more mindful of those around them. Modern parents want to teach their children important values such as respect and empathy. Parents also want their children to understand the importance of consent and self-respect. For these reasons, there are many Disney movies that parents today choose not to show to their children because several scenes are problematic and do not align with their values.
©eafaru/Shutterstock.com
Several of the Disney movies on this list are products of their time. This means that the messages depicted in many films are there because many people didn’t know better then, while others may not have cared.
Today, values have changed, meaning parents want their children to value self-respect, respect for others, diversity, and empathy. This means they choose to forgo the movies that depict young girls as helpless, add racial stereotypes, or include scary and unnecessary storylines. For these reasons and more, the classic Disney movies on this list did not age well.

“Sleeping Beauty” began as an oral story in the 1300s. The story goes that once a beautiful princess was born to a King and a Queen. Yet, an angry, evil fairy puts a curse on the young girl. In the movie, Sleeping Beauty is whisked away to the forest to protect her from this curse, yet no matter what the fairy godmothers do, they can’t protect her.
Sleeping Beauty, otherwise known as Aurora, falls into a deep sleep after pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. She then stays in the castle, sleeping, until a prince (whom she had met briefly before) finds her, kisses her, and awakens her.
There are many reasons why “Sleeping Beauty” doesn’t age well. For starters, it has been said that in one of the original stories, the plot is much darker than a nonconsensual kiss. The story goes that instead of a kiss, the young girl falls asleep and is assaulted by a king. This happens while unconscious, and she later births two children.
While the story softens up through the centuries, the nonconsensual kiss and the idea that a girl needs a prince to save her don’t sit well with many of today’s modern families. This is especially true for those raising their children to be mindful of how important consent is.

“The Little Mermaid” tells the story of a young mermaid, Ariel, unsatisfied with her life under the sea. She wants more. Then Ariel sees a young man, falls in love, and trades her voice for a chance to win his affection. After an intense battle with the sea witch, Prince Eric and Ariel receive her Father’s blessing to live happily ever after.
If you watched “The Little Mermaid” as a child and then rewatched it as an adult, chances are some parts make you cringe. Namely, when Ariel falls in love with a man she never even met. Sure, wanting to experience life outside of the ocean is a beautiful motive. Everyone needs to experience life for themselves. Yet, Ariel falls in love with a random man she doesn’t know. She then risks it all for just a chance to kiss him, which borders on stalker behavior.
As a parent, no one wants their children to think that risking it all for someone they don’t know is always a good idea.
“Snow White” is a classic Disney movie with catchy tunes and memorable moments. The storyline portrays a young princess who has to escape her jealous stepmother, so she goes into the woods. Here, she finds a cottage that belongs to the seven Dwarfs.
After some time, Snow White is found by her jealous stepmother and fed a poisonous apple. She then falls into a deep sleep, much like Sleeping Beauty. This is when it gets annoying. Like her fellow princess, Snow White is awakened only by a nonconsensual kiss from a man she doesn’t know.
Although the film can be sweet, many areas can be problematic. Snow White is painted as a helpless girl who needs strange men (she doesn’t know) to save her. It is frustrating that she also takes a random apple from a stranger. To top it off, Snow White has to be saved by receiving a nonconsensual kiss. 100 years ago, a story of a helpless girl who needed saving may have been cute and relatable. However, we want to send a different message to our daughters today.

“Peter Pan” is based on the classic play and shows Peter Pan bringing Wendy and her brothers to Neverland, where no one grows old. However, the problem is an angry pirate doesn’t like Peter Pan and wants to destroy him.
One of the most problematic areas that come from “Peter Pan” is the depiction of Native Americans. The song “What Makes the Red Man Red?” is chock-full of racial stereotypes. These stereotypes are offensive and do not respectfully portray the tribe.
©"Dumbo (1941)" by BudCat14/Ross is licensed under BY 2.0. - Original / License
“Dumbo” is a heartwrenching movie that can make one cry. The story is about a circus elephant who is born with huge ears. When his mother defends him from being taunted, she gets locked up. Dumbo later learns that his ears give him the ability to fly.
This short film has some sweet elements, like a protective mother willing to defend her son. However, there are also problematic aspects. One of the scenes that did not age well is the portrayal of the crows. These scenes depict African Americans in a very stereotypical way. Even more, the leader of the crows is named “Jim Crow.”
Another troubling scene from Dumbo is when he drinks alcohol. This is problematic because Dumbo is just a child. He becomes drunk and starts to see visions of pink elephants. A child drinking alcohol could have been left out of the film.
©"DFDC Pocahontas and John Smith Doll Set" by moggymawee is licensed under BY 2.0. - Original / License
“Pocahontas” is a Disney movie that takes a turn at trying to depict actual events. It tells the story of Pocahontas and John Smith. While exploring how the English Settlers try to take land from the Native Americans.
“Pocahontas” didn’t age well because it doesn’t depict history correctly. The story, for starters, is not accurate, as there was no romantic relationship between Pocahontas and John Smith. (She was only ten!) Also, it waters down historical facts in a way that makes the conflicts and treatment of Native Americans (and Pocahontas) seem not as bad as they really were.
©"Pinocchio (1940)" by twm1340 is licensed under BY-SA 2.0. - Original / License
“Pinocchio” tells the story of a wooden puppet created by Geppetto. Geppetto is a man who wishes for a son of his own. Therefore, audiences rejoice when the man’s wish is fulfilled, and Pinocchio becomes a boy. Yet, the boy quickly finds that he is unsatisfied with his life. Making it easy to lead him astray to a strange place called Pleasure Island with several other boys.
The storyline of Pleasure Island is very dark and unsettling. If you do a simple rewatch as an adult, chances are you will find an unsettling pit grow in your stomach.
The young boys are kidnapped and lured to Pleasure Island, where they are allowed to do whatever they want, such as smoke and drink. Then, they are turned into donkeys and sold. While Pinocchio escapes and finds Gepetto again, the underlying storyline is scary for children and disturbing for adults, especially since these boys are never seen again.
©"SONG OF THE SOUTH" by BudCat14/Ross is licensed under BY 2.0. - Original / License
“Song of the South” is undoubtedly one of those Disney movies that didn’t age well. It is about a boy who goes to a plantation to live with his grandmother and mom. During his stay, he gets to know Uncle Remus.
“The Song of the South” romanticizes what life on a plantation was like for enslaved people during this period. It paints a picture that isn’t accurate to history. This movie has been problematic since its release because children (and adults) must be given a true and accurate history, no matter how difficult it is to hear. Anything other than the truth disrespects those who experienced these hard truths.
©Courtesy of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution - Original / License
“Beauty and the Beast” is a beloved Disney film about a young girl who loves books, longs for cultural experiences, and feels like she doesn’t fit in with her town. When a beast kidnaps her father in a castle, she trades her life for his, agreeing to stay with the beast forever. She slowly falls in love with the beast, saving him at the end with her tears after an angry townsman tries to kill him.
While many people love “Beauty and the Beast,” it has been scrutinized in recent years. Many have attributed Belle’s affection for the beast to Stockholm Syndrome. Whether or not that is the case, Belle does have the notion that she can “fix” the beast and turn him into something he never was.
Sure, the beast just needed to learn how to love, but the fact that he captured Belle and tried to scare her into submission throws red flags everywhere.
©Courtesy of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution - Original / License
“Lady and The Tramp” tells the story of a dog off the street who falls in love with a high-end lady (dog.)
While it is a cute movie at its core, it has problematic racist portrayals. The two Siamese cats are depicted in a very negative light. Sure, they are the villains, but the song “Siamese Cat Song” is offensive, and the character depictions are chock-full of stereotypes that shouldn’t be in the movie, to begin with.
©Sarunyu L/Shutterstock.com
Although Disney has produced several movies over the last 100 years that have not aged well, they also have many incredible ones that make great family movie night films. Films like “Moana,” “Frozen,” “Raya,” “Brave,” and “Mulan” all have strong female leads that show young girls they can be strong and courageous and create a life they love.
Inside Out movies explore the themes of emotions, growing up, and how to handle all the feelings that come with it. The movies show kids that feeling emotions is okay; you don’t always have to be happy. “Encanto” shares that while your talents may differ from someone else’s, you are still important.
Although there are several classic Disney movies that did not age well, do not entirely discount the production company. Several films showcase excellent leads and important storylines and can be fun for adults and children. These films allow you to have a great time with your family and not worry about the underlying messages that do not align with your modern values.

]]>Over the years, there have been many TV shows that have entertained us with great moments and wonderful characters. Many of those shows have revolved around families that were typically led by a father. Every one of those programs is different. Many of them have left us with relatable TV dads while other dads are a bit more cringe-worthy, and that’s what we’re talking about today.
We’ll tell you about 10 of the most relatable TV dads, including Danny Tanner from “Full House”, Phil Dunphy from “Modern Family,” Dan Conner from “Roseanne,” and Phillip Banks from “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” among others. These are dads who showed constant love and care for their families and always had an important lesson to teach.
Then, we’ll tell you about dads that did not stand the test of time. Fathers like Al Bundy from “Married with Children” and Archie Bunker from “All in the Family.” They are dads who were often more insulting than loving, and honestly, we’re glad they weren’t part of our family.
Without further ado, here’s a list of the most relatable TV dads of all time and five that will make you cringe.
©Frederick M. Brown/ via Getty Images
Danny Tanner was played by stand-up comedian Bob Saget. It’s true that his stand-up was very raunchy, but as a TV dad, he was the best. He raised three kids with a little help from Uncle Jesse and Joey, and he did it to perfection. He taught the kids very important lessons about how to keep to their morals and always do what’s right, even if it is hard. The show has held up over time and you can watch it every year and continue to see a quality dad doing his best.
©FOX
For a decade, “Married With Children” was one of the dominating shows on the Fox network and it had a lot of fans. Of all the characters, most people loved Dad Al Bundy the most. On the surface, he was a man who was just trying to provide a life for his family and put food on the table. However, while he did so, he insulted his family, lusted after other women, and constantly berated his son and daughter. While it was funny back then, it’s easy to see today that Al is a womanizer and it’s enough to make you cringe.

If you’re a man who wants to raise your kids with a love of construction and a knowledge of how to fix things around the house, then Tim Taylor is likely one of the most relatable fathers in your book. He was a bit rough around the edges, but most fathers are in one way or another. In addition to wanting to the best for his family, he was also a celebrity with his show, so he had a lot going for him. Yes, Tim Taylor was a bit of a goofball with his grunts and noises, but all of the best fathers have their quirks. All in all, we think he’s a winner.
©Haelen Haagen/Shutterstock.com
Yes, he’s a cartoon, and yes, he’s kind of a buffoon at times, but we still think he’s one of the most relatable TV dads. He’s another one of those guys that makes a fool out of himself more often than not but he’s doing it in the best interest of his family. No, he’s not perfect, but no dad is. “The Simpsons” has been on for over 30 years, and throughout it all, Homer has remained a constant, and he will go down as one of the greatest TV characters of all time, animated or not.
©CBS
Archie Bunker was the head of the family and the main character of the sitcom “All in the Family.” He was a family man, a blue-collar worker, and a World War II veteran. However, while he had his good points, he was far from perfect. In fact, by today’s standards, he was pretty cringey. Many people would see him as racist and sexist. He always said what was on his mind, regardless of how inappropriate it was. Some say his behavior is due to his rough past, but still, he’s a character that could never exist today.
©ABC
Talk about a guy who would do anything for his family! Phil Dunphy was the ultimate father of three kids and a loving husband to his wife. His entire existence revolved around ensuring that his family was cared for and that they had everything they needed to live the best life. While he was the man of the house, he also had a child-like deadener which was hard not to love. You could even call him the more modern Danny Tanner. He always had some great advice and a very funny one-liner to go along with it. Most people wish they had a lovable father like Phil.
©ABC
One of the most controversial sitcoms over the past decades is “Roseanne,” but that’s just because the show mimicked life in real families across the country, especially in the Midwest. Parents do the best they can, even if their kids face hardships along the way, and this was proven by Dan Conner. He was a great dad and he was more realistic than many of the other dads on TV. He did get mad sometimes and say things he shouldn’t, but he always meant the best. He is truly a dad that most fathers in the real world can relate to.
©Showtime
As the name of the show implies, the characters don’t have a lot of great moments and that’s especially true for dad Frank Gallagher. He’s a drinker who is always hatching up a new scheme to make money without really working, whether it’s scamming the government or trying to get money from the Make-a-Wish Foundation by convincing his son that he has cancer. Frank Gallagher is not a good man and he is not a father that anyone should try to emulate. If the show wasn’t supposed to be a comedy, it would just be sad. Part of this believable cringe is due to the great acting of William H. Macy.
©NBC Productions
Next on our list of relatable TV dads is Phillip Banks. While we may not be able to relate to his millions of dollars or his mansion, we can relate to how he cared about his family. He was a hero to his biological kids and he was also a great uncle to Will Smith’s character. Phillip Banks always exuded authority, and his kids listened to him without delay, but it wasn’t out of fear, it was out of respect. Uncle Phil showed us that it isn’t millions of dollars that make for a great family, it’s being a great father and caretaker.
©Warner Bros
Carl Winslow was relatable by all the working fathers out there. Carl worked as a police officer during the day, and when he got home, he had to police his large family, including children and the adults in the house. While each episode was funny and had quirky antics, at the end of each show, Carl always had a lesson to impart to his kids, and they always understood. He was a good dad who kept his composure regardless of his run-ins with Steve Urkel, and we loved every minute of it. This guy was truly the father of the year.
©Fox Broadcasting Co
As a comedic father on a sitcom, Red Foreman was quite funny. However, he was often not the positive role model that kids need as they grow and learn about the world. A major part of Red’s parenting style was to berate his son with insults, including calling him a “dumba**” in almost every episode. While it’s good to try and help your kids mature into adults and learn important lessons, there is such a thing as taking it too far. Red Foreman will go down in sitcom history, but maybe not for the right reasons.
©paramount television
Easily one of the most relatable TV dads, Mike Brady certainly deserves a place on top of this list. In fact, if you look up “great TV dad” in the dictionary, his name will likely come up. Yes, he may seem like too much of a perfect father, but that’s what all men should strive to be. Like many other dads on this list, Mike Brady was respected, and he always had a valuable lesson to teach his many kids, and they took it to heart. Many people dream of being the ideal dad, and this is as close as you’ll get.
©FXX Networks
As a father, you’re supposed to be a role model to your children. While you can have some fun, your main responsibility is to be their rock. In the case of Frank Reynolds, he’s more about having a good time and being a friend to his son rather than a dad. He’s also not a good role model. He’s always hatching new schemes and engaging in dangerous activity that includes waving a gun around more often than he should. Frank Reynolds is funny on the show, but he’s a caricature of a father and not someone who should be emulated.
©20th Century Fox Studios
Most of the relatable TV dads on this list are so appealing because they’re incredibly nice and supportive. Few are as supportive as Louis Huang, a dad and restaurant owner who would do anything for his family. Sometimes, you might say that he cared too much. He ran a restaurant and treated the staff like family. That’s how nice he was. He also taught his kids great lessons so that they could follow in his footsteps and become successful adults. We all wish we had a dad like Louis.
©Warner Brothers
The final of the relatable TV dads is the irritable but loving father Ray Barone on “Everyone Loves Raymond.” Ray was loved to death by his own parents who lived across the street, and he passed on that love to his family. Yes, Ray could get a little angry sometimes but he always put his family first. Any dad that claims that they never get upset is likely lying, so Ray is a very relatable character that we still love watching to this day.

]]>A new ride at Disney is in the news. On June 28, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened up at Walt Disney World. It’s the most significant ride opening of the year at Disney’s Parks, but it has also led to significant controversy.
Let’s look at why the ride is so controversial and how riders who have gotten to try the ride are reviewing it.
©MomsWhoThink / Eric Bleeker
In January 2023, the animatronics at Splash Mountain went quiet as Disney World embarked upon a re-imagining of the ride.
©"SONG OF THE SOUTH" by BudCat14/Ross is licensed under BY 2.0. - Original / License
©MomsWhoThink / Eric Bleeker
©https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/attractions/magic-kingdom/tianas-bayou-adventure/ - Original / License

]]>It’s a phenomenon that has been around for nearly 25 years, and surprisingly there are no signs of slowing. Yes, we’re talking about KIDZ BOP. Whether you love it, hate it, love to hate it, or hate to love it, we’re willing to bet you have a strong opinion about the ever-rotating cast of child performers. As we close in on the launch of their latest summer tour, we thought we’d revisit some of the more remarkable and perhaps little-known facts about this grand-slam children’s music franchise — including the general consensus about the worst lyric swap in KIDZ BOP history.
©Courtesy of Razor & Tie
It all started with the first KIDZ BOP album, which was released on October 9, 2001. The OG CD featured pop hits like “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, and “Bye Bye Bye” by *NSYNC — all sung by kids.

KIDZ BOP has had several KIDZ BOP Kids go on to enjoy larger celebrity status, including Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt, and Zendaya (pictured), who appeared on KIDZ BOP 15. She also had a song of her own, “Replay,” appear on KIDZ BOP 26.
Since its debut, KIDZ BOP has had more than 4.5 billion streams and sold more than 21 million albums.

KIDZ BOP was Billboard’s #1 Kids’ Album Artist for 10 consecutive years starting in 2010. In fact, according to Billboard, “In 2013, the franchise’s albums accounted for 18.8% of all children’s music sales.”

KIDZ BOP was strictly an American craze until February 2017, when the project launched in the UK. Since then, KIDZ BOP Germany was added in 2019, and KIDZ BOP France and KIDZ BOP Mexico in 2021.

KIDZ BOP is known for swapping inappropriate lyrics for more kid-friendly versions, which many argue isn’t effective at all. In fact, Christopher Bell, an associate professor of media studies at the University of Colorado calls Kidz Bop “an abomination.” “I don’t need a sanitized version of ‘Despacito‘ (sung by Luis Fonsi and Yankee Daddy, pictured),” he’s stated. “I need 8-year-olds not to be singing ‘Despacito’ because that [song] is super dirty. And KIDZ BOP doesn’t always make that distinction.”

On average, four KIDZ BOP albums are released each year. To date, more than 75 KIDZ BOP albums have been released.

A KIDZ BOP fashion line is launching in the third quarter of 2024 in partnership with IHL Group. This is the second fashion collaboration. The first was with the now-defunct children’s clothing line Crazy 8.

And finally, according to our unofficial research, it appears that when it comes to lyric changes, the most ridiculous of all the KIDZ BOP songs is the KB version of Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop.” Listen here and decide for yourself.

]]>In order to do almost anything on an iPhone or MacBook, you have to have an Apple ID. Essentially, this is your private login so you can store your data safely while also accessing your popular apps, like iCloud, the App Store, and iTunes, among others. If you allow your child to use your computer or smartphone, then you need to ensure that they can’t download unauthorized content or view inappropriate media online. So, you can create an Apple ID for your child by setting them up through the Family Sharing tool on your device. Today, we will talk about how to get your child set up and why they may need an ID.
It is no secret that in today’s world, we are addicted to our phones and computers. We use them for important work, like paying the bills and hosting meetings at work. However, we also use them for leisure.
We take pictures with our phones, we create to-do lists, and we update our calendars. If you want your kids to be in the loop, then you can create an Apple ID for your child, and they can also see and share their family photos and see what is coming up in the family calendar. You can also share your music, books, games, and more.
As a parent, you have full control of what your children can do when they are on their Apple devices, even if they have their own Apple ID. You can approve and moderate download requests or prohibit them from buying games and software.
You are able to create an Apple ID for your children through Apple’s Family Sharing application. Keep in mind that if your child is under the age of 13, they must get an ID through this system. The Apple company will not let them create their own independent ID until they are past that age.
You can make an apple ID for your child on your computer, tablet, or iPhone. There are several steps that go into this process, but it is relatively straightforward once you get into it.
Below is a step-by-step guide for creating an Apple ID on a computer:
1. Go to the System Preferences section of your computer. Double-click to open it. If you are unable to find it, then search through the Applications folder on your computer, and it will be there.
©
2. Once you are in the settings area, you can find the button to bring you to the Family Sharing section. It may be on the upper right-hand corner of that screen.
©
3. Upon clicking on the Family Sharing button, you will be presented with a small screen that will tell you about the program. In addition to the chance to share your apps, music, photos, storage, and backup files, you can also share your location with your family members. Click the NEXT button.
©
4. The next screen will ask if you are the one who will be the organizer for the family. If you have more than one parent on this computer, then you can choose between users. If you are the user, then click the NEXT button.
©
5. The next screen will ask you if you want to share your purchases. That includes your movies, music, TV shows, books, and apps with your child. Make your decision and then click the NEXT button.
©
6. Next, you will be presented with a screen that will ask if the purchases that your kid makes should be billed to your account. If you pick the setting, then you can require that your kids get approval from you before making a purchase.
©
7. The next screen is your basic Terms and Conditions box for the iTunes Store. If you want to know what you are in for, then make sure to read it until the end. If you’re good, then click the Agree button.
©
8. Next is the Share Your Location screen. This is where you decide if you want to turn on the setting that will allow you to find your kids or their devices. Keep in mind that you can also modify the setting later on if you change your mind down the line.
©
9. Now that you have gone through the preliminary steps and selected your settings, you will reach the screen where you can add a family member.
©
10. On the next screen, you will need to either add an existing family member or create an Apple ID for a child that doesn’t already have one. If your child doesn’t have an ID yet, then choose the bottom option and press continue.
©
11. On the next screen, you will add your child’s birthday and first and last name. Then, you will need to create an Apple ID for them and a password. Once you have what you need, press continue
©
After you press enter, you will get a final warning that you cannot change the child’s email address after you create it. You will also be unable to change their birthdate after the fact. If you are sure, then continue.
12. With the family member now created, you can add a family member. You will be presented with the same screen as before, and you can click “Add Family Member.”
©
13. Again, you will be presented with the screen you saw previously. This time, choose the best option, add the Apple ID that you created earlier, and you can begin sharing with the kids.
©
You also have the ability to create an Apple ID on your iPhone. Many of the steps are similar. If you have a phone that has iOS 16 or higher installed, then you can follow the steps below. If you have an older version, then things may look slightly different, but you will still be able to follow along.
Here are the steps for creating an ID for your child on the phone:
1. Go to the Setting screen on your phone.
2. Next, go to the Family section.
3. On the upper right-hand corner of the screen, you can press the blue icon to add a family member.
4. On the next screen, you have the same options as you did on the computer. If your child already has an account, then you can add them. If they do not, then you can Create Child Account.
©
5. Continue to follow the steps, like you did on the computer. You will add the child’s name, and birthdate and create an ID and a password for them.
You can also modify the “Allowed Content” section. That is where you can block music with explicit content and keep them from watching adult movies and TV shows, and more.
Once you set up your child’s Apple ID, you can set restrictions for how your kid can use their phone, including how long the screen will stay on, if they can use the camera, whether they are allowed to install or delete apps, if they are able to go online, and more.
If you choose to modify these settings, then you can do so by doing the following:
Generally speaking, no, your child can't bypass the restrictions you set on their Apple ID unless they gain access to your Apple product. It's important to maintain strong passcodes on all of your Apple devices, to prevent your child from being able to get into them. Change your passcodes periodically, and monitor the settings you have set for your child to ensure they aren't being changed.
While Apple does not permit children under the age of 13 to have their own Apple ID that is independent of Family Sharing, it is always possible for your child to lie about their age. Keep a close eye on them, and monitor their device use. It is important that your child sees their Apple devices as a privilege, not something they are obligated to have.
By following the simple steps above, you can create an Apple ID for a child. By doing so, you can allow them to share photos, apps, games, and more. You can also keep an eye on your child’s activity. It is a great way to give your kids some independence while also keeping them at arm’s length.

]]>Spring break is the perfect time to welcome the change of seasons and do something fun. Kids are excited to have a week off from school and homework. But for parents, having the kids home all day can be challenging. Making constant snacks, breaking up sibling squabbles, and keeping screen time to a reasonable amount takes a lot of work. Spring break doesn’t have to be stressful, though; with a little planning and creativity, you can get your kids out of the house and off their screens to make family memories. We have compiled a list of some of the best things to do with kids for spring break.

Kids benefit from spending time outdoors, and there are plenty of amazing outdoor spaces to visit. According to the National Park Foundation, there are 423 national park sites in the U.S. These include 63 national parks plus national recreation areas, national historic sites, national monuments, and national seashores. Plus, each state has a plethora of state parks to explore. Learn more about your area and find a national or state park to visit; with so many parks, there is sure to be one near you.
Many parks allow camping in designated areas, but if spring has only recently sprung, it might not be warm enough to break out the sleeping bags. Instead, opt for a day trip or consider renting a cabin or yurt to keep warm during those cool spring nights and spring rain showers.
Different parks have a variety of activities. Some parks offer hiking trails, bird watching, mountain biking trails, fishing, and endless opportunities to explore the natural beauty that has been preserved in the parks. Kids will love the chance to explore and get fresh air while on their weeklong break from the confines of the classroom.
A good amount of national parks do offer guides to take you around the park and to help with more involved activities. Some parks offer, fishing classes, wildlife spotting and education, hiking guides, and even more. Do keep in mind your kid's age and physical ability as some activities in national parks are meant for different age ranges.
Do your kids like adventure? Are they daredevils that never say no to a rollercoaster? Then take them to an amusement park during spring break. They can ride the rides, eat junk food, and enjoy all that the park offers. If your child is STEM inclined this could also be a good opportunity to have them study the rides and how the physics on them work.
If you are too far from Disneyland in California and not close enough to Disney World in Florida, don’t worry. There are many amusement parks across the U.S. Six Flags has 21 locations throughout the U.S., and there are many smaller amusement parks scattered across the states.
According to U.S. News and World Report, some of the top amusement parks in the U.S. are Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH; Kennywood in West Mifflin, PA; Holiday World Theme Park & Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus, IN; Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO; Kings Island in Mason, OH; Hersheypark in Hershey, PA; and Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN. With those, there are more options than just Disney, although if you can make it to a Disney park, they are amazing, and you can guarantee your kids will love them. So, add some adventure to your spring break and head to an amusement park.

Kids love water, whether they are swimming, diving, or just splashing around. Water is always fun, so head to your nearest lake, ocean, or river to get those kids outside and play in the water.
If it's still too cold in your neck of the woods to slap on a swimsuit and get outside, try your local recreation center or YMCA. Many have special spring break hours and passes to let kids use the pool and have some fun. Depending on where you live you might be able to visit an indoor water park. There are 13 indoor parks in the US.
Spring break is a great time to get your kids into swimming lessons before the summer season. Check out your local gym or aquatic center to learn more about swimming lessons in your area. Swimming is an important skill that kids should master early for safety and just for fun. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that every child knows how to swim and can start as early as one year old. The AAP goes on to say that even though kids can start swimming at one, parents should ultimately decide the best time to start swimming lessons based on their child’s specific needs.

Hands-on interactive museums are great places for kids to explore and play. Check out the interactive children's museums in your area for an exciting spring break experience. This activity could be slotted for the end of spring break after the outdoor and dynamic fun. Having your child explore the natural and scientific world could help in getting them excited to return to school.
Some children's museums have a science focus for kids to explore scientific theories and concepts through a multitude of creative activities. Kids have fun learning about weather patterns, germs, electric currents, and lots of other things related to scientific theories, observations, and experiments. These interactive museums have something for the whole family.
Children's art museums offer stimulating experiences exploring colors, shapes, and styles with hands-on activities to be an artist for the day. Artistic theory and sensory play meet in these children's art museums. So, grab your kids and head out this spring break for an unforgettable learning experience.

If you and your family are lucky enough to live by the sea, chances are there is an aquarium to visit. Aquariums offer a glimpse into the plethora of sea life and open a whole new world to children. Many aquariums offer special passes during spring break to entice curious little marine explorers to visit and learn about the underwater world.
Landlocked marine explorers don't have to be left out of the fun. Many malls in cities all over the U.S. have small mini aquariums that are focused on smaller marine life like octopuses, stingrays, turtles, and starfish.
Combine a trip to the aquarium with an evening movie about sea life, and you have a full day of spring break fun. To expand your child's learning, most aquariums offer some form of kids' educational class or guided tours to better explain the various animals. Who knows maybe your child's spring break aquarium visit turns them into lifelong ocean lovers.

Spending time with animals is great for children. Children develop compassion and empathy when they learn about animals and their environment. Developing an understanding of how to treat other living beings is important to children’s emotional development. According to Science Daily, research supports that spending time in zoos is an essential component of children learning about science, habitat, and the environment.
The United States has some fantastic zoos in San Diego, Brooklyn, Denver, and Miami, just to name a few. But even if you live in an area without a large zoo, there are still plenty of opportunities to get your children around animals. Petting zoos at local farms are a great option and allow for interaction between the children and animals. Plus, small specialty zoos that focus on one type of animal, like a llama park, big cat sanctuary, or even a reptile-focused zoo, are in many cities and towns.
Some parts of the U.S. have game farms with drive-through exhibits. Just remember not to feed the animals and keep your car windows rolled up to avoid unwanted surprises.
Spend spring break getting to know the animals in your area. Your kids will love the quality time with the animals and family.

It feels good to give; children need to learn the importance of helping others. Spring break is an excellent time to explore volunteer opportunities with your children. When parents teach kids about humility and the power of giving, they learn an excellent lesson about the importance of caring for each other that they will carry throughout their lives. Plus, there are many fun ways to volunteer that kids will enjoy.
For example, the WWOOF program has opportunities all over the U.S. and the world where families can spend time on a local farm doing chores and experiencing farm life for a day or even a week. This is a good introduction to volunteer work for children. If that doesn't appeal to your kids, there are many opportunities through the local food bank or charities. The humane society is always in need of volunteers.
Older kids can organize a neighborhood clothing donation or event for the community. No matter where you are located, there are always opportunities to give and be a helper. Spending spring break helping others allows kids to learn about themselves and their place in the world. In the same vein, much older kids could leverage their volunteer time for future employment or college opportunities.
With all these amazing things to do with kids for spring break, start planning to get out and get involved with your children and your community.
