The 1950s ushered in a period of remarkable economic growth, fueled by the post World War II optimism that blossomed after the war's conclusion in 1945. This era was marked by a widespread hope for lasting peace and prosperity.

Television became a major source of entertainment and information, alongside movies and radio, bringing cultural icons directly into homes like never before.

Popular names during the 1950s reflected both a respect for tradition and a fascination with popular culture. The top ten baby names for both boys and girls were largely unchanged from the previous decade, with James and Mary remaining the most popular baby names.

Down at number 98 sits the quiet beginning of a new era. Jennifer made its appearance on the list of most common 1950s girl names. The name's surge in popularity can be attributed to Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Jones, who became the reason so many girls received this name at the time. Jennifer continued to grow in popularity and became the most favored name of the 1970s.

Deborah, a name with Biblical roots, gained tremendous popularity in this decade. The traditional spelling rose from number 68 to number five on the list. Additionally, an alternate spelling, Debra, made an astonishing entrance to the list at number seven. Notably, Debra Kerr, a popular actress during this era contributed to the rise in popularity of this name with her roles in films like “From Here to Eternity” and “The King and I.”

Leslie, which had traditionally been a common name for boys, was now becoming a popular name for girls and entered the list at 99.

While some names went out of fashion in this decade, such as Phyllis (falling from 38 to 75), Doris (falling from 44 to 100), and Judith (falling from number nine to number 34), others disappeared completely from the list. Evelyn, for instance, was at 64 in the 1940s but fell completely off the list in the 1950s.

When it comes to popular boys' names in the 1950s, most made less dramatic movements on the list. One exception is George, which had sat at number 15 during the 1940s, and fell to number 25 in the 1950s.

Randall made an entrance to the list at number 58. This name was even more popular than such traditional favorites as Jack, Henry, and Andrew.

Kevin, a name with Irish origins, entered the list at number 27. Actor Kevin McCarthy's appearances in the film adaptations of “Death of a Salesman” and the science-fiction movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” contributed to this popularity.

Actor Tony Randall rose to popularity and appeared in the popular TV show “Mr. Peepers.” His Emmy-winning performance may have been part of the reason parents favored this name.

Finally, Vincent entered the list at number 100. Vincent Price was a popular and well-respected movie and radio actor of this era.

Certain names come and go while others are mainstays forever. The 1980s was a decade that gave us the Nintendo Game Boy, MTV, the Sony Walkman, and disposable cameras. It also re-introduced the world to many of the trendiest boys names, monikers that are still popular today. Names like Michael, that enjoyed popularity for more than a century but saw a surge when icons like Michael Jackson and Michael J. Fox dominated the scene.

Other trendy boys names from the 1980s reflected an appreciation for places near and far. Ireland gave us names like Sean, Adam, and Kevin, while British royalty influenced classics such as William and Charles. Most biblical names remained popular, although the former top choices of David and Joseph gave way to Daniels, Joshuas, and Jacobs.

Hospitals in the United States today are full of common names like Liam, Oliver, Emma, and Olivia. However, back in the 1980s, popular names were Christopher, Joshua, Jennifer, and Jessica. Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

1980s Girl Names

Biblical girl names were also a hit — Sarah and Rachel gained in popularity. But, the British royal family couldn't be ignored.

Elizabeth flew to the top of the list of regal names from the 80s while a young new princess named Diana made a splash in the United States. Diana rose from its number 97 spot in the 1970s to a cool 75.

But despite the continued popularity of classic names, baby names from the 80s trended toward the fun and romantic. Monikers like Tara, Brandi and Misty had pop vibes, while Kayla entered the top 100 for the first time in homage to the romance of the decade on NBC’s daytime soap “Days of our Lives”.

Enchanting names from afar were among the foremost choices for girls. Heather, a flowering evergreen from the barren lands of Scotland, and Kimberly, meaning “from the wood of the royal forest” were favorites.

Other trends in 1980s names were girl-versions of boy names like Danielle, Samantha, and Jamie, and Old English boy names for girls including Ashley and Lindsay.

Little beautiful red-haired little girl smiling happily, in summer in the forest

Does a baby name always have to have a classical meaning to reflect a child’s one-of-a-kind personality? Maybe not.

Why the name “Jessica” topped the list of the '80s' most popular girls name is a mystery — cultural inspirations are absent. And the most popular name for boys, “Michael,” could reflect Christian tradition or a fascination with the “King of Pop.”

Names with meaning matter, but ultimately, it’s what they mean to you that's the most important.

If you're looking to the '80s for name inspiration for your baby, then chances are good you're curious if the top names are still popular in 2023. Let's take a look at how the top five boys' and girls' names from the '80s fair today.

The top five names for boys in the '80s were Michael, Christopher, Matthew, Joshua, and David. Michael retains a lot of popularity today, ranking at 26 in 2023. Christopher still retains a spot in the Top 100 at rank 94. Matthew doesn't quite make it into 2023's Top 50, ranking at 56. Joshua has just fallen out of the Top 100, ranking at 101 in 2023. Finally, David is still fairly popular, ranking at 45.

In the '80s, the top five names for girls were Jessica, Jennifer, Amanda, Ashley, and Sarah. Jessica has fallen far out of popularity, ranking at 1,006 in 2023. Jennifer doesn't fair much better, though it does make the Top 1,000 at position 997. Amanda is only slightly more popular than Jennifer in 2023, ranking at 923. Ashley fairs better than all of these names, still making the Top 500 at 362. Finally, Sarah in 2023 ranks as the most popular of these five names at 238.

If you're looking for an uncommon name for your baby girl, then the top names from the '80s are certainly a great start!

Names tend to follow cycles of popularity, shifting over years, decades, or even generations. Currently, names like Noah, Liam, and Oliver for boys to Olivia, Amelia, and Emma for girls, dominate the baby name charts. However, trends evolve quickly, and next year’s favorites could be entirely different. Just as today’s top names rise and fall, once-beloved Boomer names have gradually drifted out of favor.

The Boomer generation (those born between 1946 and 1964) was once the largest generation, now replaced by Millenials. As Boomers age, their most common names are becoming increasingly obsolete. It’s often easy to determine someone is a Baby Boomer based solely on their name. We’ve compiled a list of 50 common names from the Boomer generation that are rarely heard today.

How We Determined the List

To determine the once-popular Boomer names that are rarely heard today, we reviewed data on names from the U.S. Social Security Administration. Names were ranked based on the decline in the average number of newborns receiving each name over the period 1946 through 1964 to the period 2010 through 2023. Only names that were given to fewer than one in every 10,000 newborns over the period 2010 through 2023 were considered.

As the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946-1964) grows older, many of their once-popular names are becoming increasingly rare. In fact, certain names are so closely tied to this era that they can immediately reveal someone’s generational identity. Here is a list of 50 iconic Boomer names that are gradually fading away.

How We Determined the List

To determine the most popular baby boomer names that are dying out, we reviewed data on names from the U.S. Social Security Administration. Names were ranked based on the decline in the average number of newborns receiving each name over the period 1946 through 1964 to the period 2010 through 2023. Only names that were given to fewer than one in every 10,000 newborns over the period 2010 through 2023 were considered.

Michael has been a popular boys' name for over a century, but its appeal surged when parents looked to honor political figures like Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and President Ronald Reagan, who were working to end the Cold War.

Popular names from the 1980s also reflected an appreciation for places near and far. Ireland brought us names like Sean, Adam, and Kevin, while British royalty influenced classics such as William and Charles.

Biblical names remained popular, though the focus shifted from regal figures like David and Joseph to more modest characters, such as Daniel, Joshua, and Jacob.

1980s Girl Names

Biblical girl names were also a hit — Sarah and Rachel gained in popularity. But, the British royal family couldn't be ignored.

“Elizabeth” flew to the top of the list of regal names from the 80s while a young new princess named Diana made a splash in the United States. “Diana” rose from its number 97 spot in the 1970s to a cool 75.

But despite the continued popularity of classic names, baby names from the 80s trended toward the fun and romantic. Monikers like “Tara,” ”Brandi” and “Misty” had pop vibes, while “Kayla” entered the top 100 for the first time in homage to the romance of the decade on NBC’s daytime soap Days of our Lives.

Enchanting names from afar were among the foremost choices for girls. “Heather,” a flowering evergreen from the barren lands of Scotland, and “Kimberly,” meaning “from the wood of the royal forest” were favorites.

Names are typically popular in cycles, whether it’s yearly, in decades, or even by generations. Today’s popular baby names run the gamut from Noah, Liam, and Oliver for boys to Olivia, Amelia, and Emma for girls. Of course, this can all change by next year, just as names from the past, like the once-popular Boomer names, have started to fade away.
