A few turkeys made their way on the Mayflower voyage, which brought them into the United States. They became widespread but were so actively hunted by the 1930s that they were nearly extinct. Thanksgiving isn't complete without a turkey, or a tofurkey if you're vegetarian. Why is it this way?

Modern-day turkeys are bred with larger breasts compared to their wild turkey ancestors. This is why you can find anywhere from 8-24-pound turkeys for sale in the freezer section! But why is the turkey the bird to buy for the third Thursday in November? Early in the first New England settlements, pilgrim Sarah Joseph Hale was roasting a turkey for her whole family. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, and it helped the cause that Benjamin Franklin tried to get the turkey declared the national bird of America. While the Eagle won out, by the 19th century, the turkey was cemented as the Thanksgiving holiday bird (via TIME Magazine).

Turkey By The Pound: A Breakdown

So, now that we know a bit about the history of turkey cooking, let's get into the meat of how to cook the meat. Most sources have the science of cooking turkey by the pound down to the metric of 13 minutes per pound at 350º Fahrenheit. This metric comes from Epicurious, Southern Living, and All Recipes, although this article recommends cooking the turkey at 20 minutes per pound at 375º instead of 350º. Another article notes baking the turkey at 325º for between 13-15 minutes per pound.

These numbers will also be impacted by the presence of stuffing in the turkey cavity versus no stuffing at all. According to Southern Living, the presence of stuffing increases the cooking time by a few minutes. So, if you have an 8-12 pound bird, without stuffing, you'll cook each pound for around 13 minutes at 350º, which means your cooking time is around 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours on the longer side. With stuffing, that cook time increases to between 3 hours and 3 hours and 45 minutes.

This is a more involved, but faster and crisped turkey experience (via Southern Living). You can air fry your turkey, preferably a turkey on the smaller side, at 350º. Or place it, seasoned, in a crockpot to simmer on low for around 8.5 hours. You can even take a stab at grilling the turkey. You'll need to preheat your oven to at least 450º Fahrenheit, and grill for between 2-3 hours. Deep frying is also an option. However, please be careful, you're dealing with hot oil and a rather large, unwieldy bird.

Prime rib is full of flavor and is known to be one of the better cuts of beef. Cooking prime rib at home is great for a special occasion or for a family dinner. Although this cut of meat is called prime rib, make sure not to get fooled about the grade of the meat you're buying. If you want prime meat, make sure that it's graded prime by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The name of this cut of meat can easily fool anyone if you're not sure what to look for. Now that you have the meat you want let's take a look at three ways you can cook your prime rib perfectly.

Preparation

No matter the method you choose to cook your prime rib, you will first need to prepare it. You will want to remove the silver skin from the back of the bones. You can also remove any excess fat around the edges. One of the most important things when cooking prime rib is to make sure it is at room temperature before cooking. So, pull your meat out of the fridge, cut away any undesirable areas, and cover it in a dry rub of seasonings. It will need to sit out on the counter for a few hours to reach room temperature. Allowing it to soak in herbs and seasonings during this time is great for flavor.

You will need to keep a careful eye on the temperature of your prime rib to make sure it's cooked to the doneness that you like.

Temperatures

Based on how rare or cooked you like your meat, you will need to know these temperatures to cook your prime rib just right. If your prime rib is 120 degrees, it will be rare. 130 degrees is medium rare. 140 degrees is medium. 150 is medium well. Anything above 150 is going to be well done. It's extremely important to note that your prime rib will continue to cook after you've stopped cooking it while it's resting. So, make sure you stop cooking it at a lower temperature than you want it to be.

Grilled

Once you've prepared your prime rib, heat the grill to 250 degrees. Place it on the grill with the fat side up. Make sure that the prime rib isn't placed on direct heat. Then, close the lid and cook until the internal temperature reaches 110 degrees, this can take around two hours. Turn up the grill to 400 degrees and cook until it reaches your desired temperature. Once complete, remove it from the grill and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  • Preheat the grill to 250 degrees.
  • Place the meat fat side up over indirect heat.
  • Close the lid of the grill and cook until the meat reaches 110 degrees.
  • Turn up the grill to 400 degrees and cook until it reaches the desired temperature.

Oven-Baked

To cook your prime rib in the oven, preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Make sure that the oven shelves are adjusted accordingly so that the meat will sit in the middle of the oven. Once the prime rib is prepared and seasoned, place it in an oven-safe baking dish. Place it in the oven and cook for 20 minutes. Then, turn the temperature down to 250 degrees and cook for 90 minutes, basting it every 30 minutes. Once it has reached the internal temperature of your choice, remove it and allow it to rest for 30 minutes.

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • Arrange the oven so it will sit in the middle.
  • Place in the oven and cook for 20 minutes at 450 degrees.
  • Then lower the temperature to 250 degrees.
  • Cook for 90 minutes.
  • Baste the meat every 30 minutes.
  • Remove when it's reached your desired internal temperature.
  • Allow to rest for 30 minutes.

Crock Pot

Before fully cooking your rib roast in the crockpot, you'll want to sear it on a skillet first. So, heat oil in a large skillet and sear every side of the meat on high. Once completed, set the prime rib aside, you can cook some onions in this oil for extra flavor, or you can deglaze the pan with a bit of red wine or broth. Cook that for a couple of minutes and save these juices to add to the crock pot. Place the meat and juices in the crockpot and cook on low to three hours. Check the temperature after three hours and cook for any additional time if it's not at your desired temperature. Once complete, remove it from the crockpot and allow it to rest for 30 minutes.

  • Heat oil in a skillet on high.
  • Sear prime rib on all sides.
  • Deglaze the pan with wine or broth.
  • Place meat and pan juices into crockpot.
  • Cook for three hours on low.
  • Check internal temperature and remove or cook until the desired temperature is reached.

It can be cooked with the bone in it and is often served with a pan sauce made with the juices that come out during the cooking process. “Prime” refers to how the U.S. Department of Agriculture grades the meat. If you have a prime rib at home ready to cook, here are four ways you can cook it perfectly.

Grill

To grill your prime rib, heat the grill to 375 degrees. While it is heating, prepare the roast by trimming away any excess fat. Be careful not to trim away too much of the roast, doing your best to keep its overall shape while removing only small bits of fat at a time. Then, cover the roast in olive oil and generously season with your choice of herbs and spices. The basic seasonings include salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Then, place the prime rib with a heat-safe thermometer in the middle of the grill over indirect heat. Close the grill and cook until the internal temperature of the roast is 120 degrees. Once it's reached this temperature, let it rest for 30 minutes before cutting and serving.

  • Preheat the grill to 375 degrees.

Once the roast is at room temperature, preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Dry off the prime rib with a paper towel, and generously season it with your preferred seasonings. Then, place an oven-proof thermometer into the middle of the roast. Cook in the oven at 500 degrees for about 15 minutes to brown the roast. Then, lower the temperature to 325 and cook for 10-15 minutes per pound of roast. You want the internal temperature to reach 115 degrees for rare, 120 degrees for medium rare, or 130 degrees for medium. It's important to note that it will still cook after you take it out of the oven, so keep that in mind when deciding when you should pull it out of the oven. Once removed from the oven, cover it in tin foil and allow it to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

  • Allow prime rib to come down to room temperature.
  • Salt while resting to remove excess liquid.
  • Preheat oven to 500 degrees.
  • Pat roast dry and generously season with preferred seasonings.
  • Place a thermometer into the roast.
  • Cook in the oven for 15 minutes before reducing the temperature to 325 degrees.
  • Cook the roast for 10-15 minutes per pound.
  • Check the internal temperature has reached between 115 and 130 degrees.
  • Cover in foil and allow to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Cut and serve.

Crock Pot

To cook your prime rib in the crock pot, allow it to warm up to room temperature. You'll want to sear your roast before placing it in the crock pot. Heat up a skillet and brown each side of the meat first. Then, place the roast in the crock pot and generously season. Cook on low for three to five hours. Using a thermometer, check after three hours that the internal temperature has reached 120 degrees. Once fully cooked, remove from crock pot and allow to rest for 15 minutes before serving.

  • Allow prime rib to come down to room temperature.
  • Sear on a skillet to brown each side.
  • Place in the crock pot and season generously.
  • Cook on low for 3-5 hours or until the temperature has reached 120 degrees.

Crock pots and instant pots (pressure cookers) can be a less complicated method of cooking since it's so hands-off, although crock pots are slower and instant pots are much faster.

Instant Pot

To cook your prime rib in the instant pot, make sure the meat is at room temperature. Then season it generously. Using the saute function, brown each side of the roast in the instant pot with a little bit of butter. This will take about five minutes per side. Remove the roast, and using a cup of beef broth, scrape off the bottom of the pot. Then, add the roast back to the pot and cook on high for 12 minutes. Allow the steam to release, and let the roast rest for 30 minutes. Then, check that the internal temperature has reached 115 degrees. If the temperature is too low, close the lid to the instant pot and let it sit for five minutes at a time until it reaches the desired temperature.

  • Allow prime rib to come down to room temperature.
  • Season it generously.
  • Saute on each side for 5 minutes.
  • Remove meat from the instant pot.
  • Scrape the bottom of the pot with 1 cup of beef broth.
  • Add meat back to pot and cook on high for 12 minutes.
  • Allow the steam to release.
  • Do not open the instant pot and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • Check that the internal temperature has reached 115 degrees.
  • Close the lid for 5 minutes at a time if it hasn't reached the desired temperature.

The corned beef was originally invented when we didn't have refrigerators, and the beef was cured with salt to preserve the meat. The salt used to preserve the meat resembled corn, and that's where the name came from. If you're ready to make this delicious meal at home, here are four ways to cook your corned beef and cabbage perfectly.

Stovetop

It is very easy to cook corned beef and cabbage on the stovetop. To start, place your brisket and the seasoning packet that comes in the prepackaged corn beef brisket into a pot. This seasoning packet usually includes peppercorns, mustard seeds, bay leaves, dill seeds, and other seasonings. Then, cover the brisket with water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer with a lid for two hours. After two hours, add in around eight carrots and four pounds of potatoes, both of them peeled and sliced or cubed. Return the liquid to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer covered for 35 minutes. Once the beef and vegetables are tender, add your head of cabbage that is cut into wedges and return to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes covered. Once the cabbage is cooked, remove the brisket and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  • Place brisket and seasonings into a pot.
  • Cover brisket with water and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer covered for two hours.
  • Add in peeled and cut (8) carrots and (4 lbs) potatoes.
  • Bring the liquid to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer covered for 35 minutes.
  • Add one head of cabbage and return to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Remove the brisket to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Serve.
Homemade Corned Beef and Cabbage with Carrots and Potatoes

Crock Pot

Cooking your corned beef and cabbage in the crock pot is simple. First, place the potatoes, onions, and carrots in the crock pot, then cover in four cups of water. Then, place the brisket on top of the vegetables and pour six ounces of dark beer on the brisket. Sprinkle the spice packet over the brisket, and cook in the crock pot on high for seven hours. Then, add in the cabbage and cook for an additional hour.

  • Add potatoes, onions, carrots, and water to crock pot
    • 10 small potatoes, 1 onion, 4 large carrots, 4 cups water
  • Lay brisket on top of vegetables.
  • Cover in 6 ounces of dark beer and sprinkle the spice packet.
  • Cook on high for 7 hours.
  • Add 1 head of cabbage and cook for an additional hour.
  • Serve.

Instant Pot

To cook corned beef and cabbage in an instant pot, place one onion that is quartered at the bottom and place the corned beef on top. Sprinkle in the spice packet and add in four cups of water. Cook these on high for 80 minutes. Then, allow the pressure to release. Once ready, set aside the onions and meat to rest. Then, remove two cups of the water from the pot, and add in four carrots, one pound of potatoes, and one head of cabbage. Cook on high for five minutes and then release the pressure. During this time, you can cut the meat (going against the grain) and prepare it to be served.

  • Place 1 onion quartered and brisket into the pot.
  • Add the spice packet and 4 cups of water.
  • Cook on high for 80 minutes.
  • Remove onions and beef, and set aside to rest.
  • Add in 4 carrots and 1 pound of potatoes (peeled and quartered), and one head of cabbage (quartered).
  • Cook on high for 5 minutes.
  • Slice the meat against the grain.
  • Serve.

To grill your corned beef and cabbage, preheat the grill on medium heat, which is anywhere between 350 and 450 degrees. Rub in the spices and add three cups of water to the pan. Cover the pan in aluminum foil and place onto the grill. Close the grill lid and cook for two hours. Then remove the pan from the grill and add in cabbage and potatoes. Baste the new vegetables with some of the liquid from the pan. Cover again with foil and grill with the lid closed for an additional hour. Remove from the grill, allow the meat to rest for at least five minutes before slicing and then serve.

  • Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  • Place 4 quartered carrots and 1 onion in foil pan.
  • Put brisket on top of vegetables and sprinkle the spice packet.
  • Add 3 cups of water and cover the pan in aluminum foil.
  • Grill with lid closed for 2 hours.
  • Add 1 head of cabbage quartered and 10 small potatoes.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and grill for an additional hour.
  • Remove the pan and allow the brisket to rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

If you choose to season them, mix your cut potatoes in a bowl with oil and seasonings. Then, place them in the air fryer basket. Evenly spread out the potatoes into a single layer, if you have more potatoes than can fit, cook them in separate batches. For each batch, cook at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket to mix them halfway through.

Mashed Potatoes

Making air fryer mashed potatoes will require a few extra steps. First, cover your clean sweet potatoes in olive oil, then place them in the air fryer basket. Do not stack your potatoes in the basket, make sure there is space between the potatoes. For 50 minutes, cook the potatoes at 400 degrees, flipping them 25 minutes in. Once done, remove the potatoes from the air fryer and peel off the skin. Then, in a bowl, place the potatoes and your favorite mashed potato ingredients to mix all together. You can keep it simple by adding just butter and milk, or you can also include cinnamon or maple syrup.

Are the Costco Savings Worth It?

Is that a big enough savings to justify buying this massive set? It's clearly been enough to overwhelm demand as the Costco page for the 157-piece set is now displaying them as “Out of Stock.”

The set is probably best suited for buyers who are looking to completely revamp their cookware. A lot of the extra value comes from getting things like dinner plates, soup bowls, and assorted items like spoons which you may already have and aren't looking to replace.

We also isolated items on the list that are dishes (that is to say, excluded things like plates) and the total value came out to a bit more than $5,000. That's still a better value than the complete set through Costco ($4,499.99), but assuming there are some dishes and saucepans you wouldn't otherwise purchase, the savings aren't as extreme.

Regardless, we can't wait to see some videos springing up on TikTok and Instagram of these 157-piece sets hitting homes in the coming weeks!

Grilling is perhaps the best way to cook any type of steak. The intense heat sears the outside of the filet mignon, creating a crispy crust and sealing in the meat’s natural juices. Instead of adding seasoned butter at the end, this Taste of Home recipe calls for mixing up a savory baby portobello mushroom sauce to add exquisite flavor to your filet mignon. It calls for ingredients you probably already have in the pantry, including soy sauce, brown sugar, and ginger ale.

You’ve seen the shield-shaped beef grade stickers at the meat counter, but what do they mean? The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) developed a beef grading system that reveals the quality of the meat in each package. The USDA grading system also benefits ranchers and others who work in the beef industry because it helps ensure uniform standards. The agency created eight grade levels, but the top three are the most common in stores and restaurants: USDA Prime, USDA Choice, and USDA Select.

These standards measure beef for its tenderness, juiciness, and flavor. USDA Choice and USDA Prime beef differences are mainly in age and fat content. Prime grade provides the best beef-eating experience, followed closely by Choice. Select grade beef is generally lower in fat content but still high quality. Standard and Commercial grades of beef may be sold as store-brand meat or left ungraded. Utility, Cutter, and Canner grades are used to make processed meat products or ground beef.

USDA Beef Grading Process

Beef is graded at the slaughterhouse by a trained inspector who ranks meat according to its maturity and level of marbling (the flecks of fat distributed throughout the lean meat). Both of these are the primary factors in determining how tender a cut of meat is likely to be. Meat from younger cattle is usually more tender, and has better fat marbling.

All of the cuts from a single carcass usually receive the same grade. After the inspector grades the meat, the manufacturer must label it according to requirements set by the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Beef processing plants must comply with beef labeling laws to avoid fines of up to $10,000 and additional penalties. However, meat grading is optional, and meat producers who want it must pay for the service.

What is Prime beef?

USDA Prime beef is of the highest quality. It has generous fat marbling and comes from younger cattle. It is extremely tender, juicy and flavorful. Prime cuts are the best to use with dry-heat cooking methods including grilling, roasting, broiling, and baking. The tenderest cuts of Prime beef include rib-eye, tenderloin, T-bones, strip steaks, and porterhouses.

Only around 3% of all graded beef receives a Prime rating. It can be difficult to find Prime beef in ordinary grocery stores. Most U.S. Prime beef is reserved for high-end restaurants, but you can buy it online through companies like Omaha Steaks and Snake River Farms.

What is Choice beef?

USDA Choice beef is the second-highest quality grade and easy to find at your local supermarket. Around 50% of all graded beef receives a Choice rating. This beef has enough fat marbling to keep it juicy during grilling or roasting, resulting in a flavorful eating experience.  

Choice grade beef is more economical than Prime grade and works in almost any recipe. Choice beef is equally delicious cooked with dry heat or moist heat. The best Choice cuts come from the rib and loin sections.

Because the price difference can be extreme, most people save Prime beef purchases for special occasions. Indeed, it would be a waste of good marbling to hide Prime beef in a stew or slow cooker recipe. For most everyday beef recipes, Choice grade is high enough quality to provide excellent results.

Standard grade beef is a great way to save money on beef for moist-heat cooking methods, like soups and stews. These may or may not have a Standard label, as stores are allowed to label them as store-brand or leave them ungraded. You can tell they lack the marbling that’s evident on more expensive cuts, so it’s best to use them in slow-cooked recipes. Grilling Standard grade beef will result in tough, dry meat.

With this one appliance, food can be sauteed before cooking, and meats that can take all day to prepare in a slow cooker can be done in no time using the pressure function of an Instant Pot.

What is a Crockpot?

While the Instant Pot is a relatively new appliance, the Crockpot has been around for decades. If you don't already own one, you've probably seen one in your mother's kitchen while growing up or at the local potluck.

The original patent for the slow-cooking device came in 1940 when inventor Irving Naxon created a machine to cook beans, calling it the Naxon Beanery. If you're feeling crazy, you can load the interior up with all three. Then you fry them until they become crispy and resemble the shape of a flute, hence the name “flautas.”

If you're saying to yourself that these sound very similar to the iconic 7-11 taquito, you are correct. The popular convenience chain is, in fact, selling you flautas under the guise of being tiny tacos. We forgive them, though, because whatever you call them, they are easily one of the fastest, most delicious, most crowd-pleasing dishes in existence. We dare even your pickiest eater not to love them, especially because of how portable they are. The smaller serving size is also less overwhelming for apprehensive tasters. 

What are the Nutritional Differences Between Flautas and Chimichangas?

T there are definitely alternatives to deep frying both of these dishes that offer healthier options for your family meals. when it comes to replicating crunch without adding in the health concerns of deep frying, you cannot beat the air fryer in terms of efficiency or efficacy. 

Baking these in a hot oven on a sheet pan with a rack will also get you similar results. You have to brush the tortilla down with a small amount of oil to help facilitate the Maillard reaction that leads to the toasty golden-brown color and satisfyingly crunchy texture, but you'll still be adding far less oil to the dish than you would be if you deep-friend them submerged in an entire vat of fat. 

You can also improve the nutritional value of both of these with the dips and sides you consume alongside them. We love queso and refried beans as much as the next mom, but when making smart swaps, we use fresh salsas and guacamole to increase the dishes' vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats.

6 tablespoons olive oil, divided
3 pounds chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup onions, diced
1 cup green bell pepper, diced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne red pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 cup thick and chunky salsa (medium or mild)
16 (8 inch) flour tortillas
4 cups four cheese Mexican shredded cheese

Supplies:

6 one quart freezer bags
2 one gallon freezer bag, labeled

On hand for each entrée:

Sour cream


Instructions

1. In a large skillet with 4 tablespoons olive oil, brown the chicken on medium high heat until no longer pink. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Place the cooked chicken in a bowl, set aside.

2. Reduce the heat to medium and add 2 tablespoons of the olive oil to the skillet. Sauté the onion, green pepper, cumin, cayenne pepper, and oregano until tender. Add the chicken back to the pan and cook until heated through, stirring often. Stir in the salsa and heat for one minute. Set the pan aside.

3. Divide the chicken mixture evenly between 2 one-quart freezer bags; seal and set aside. Place 8 flour tortillas into 2 one-quart freezer bags; set aside. Divide cheese evenly between 2 one-quart freezer bags. Place one bag chicken mixture, one bag tortillas, and one bag of cheese into each of the one-gallon freezer bags.

To Serve:

1. Remove one entrée from the freezer and place in the refrigerator to thaw completely.

2. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Spray a large sheet pan with nonstick spray; set aside.

3. For each chimichanga, place ½ cup of the chicken mixture in the center of the tortilla. Sprinkle ¼ cup of the cheese on top. Fold in the opposite sides of the tortilla over the chicken mixture. Roll up the tortilla, enclosing the mixture, and place it seam-side down on the sheet pan. Make the rest of the Chimichangas and place them on the sheet pan. Spray the tops of the Chimichangas with nonstick spray. Bake 10 minutes. Serve with sour cream.

They're the perfect size for hungry little hands to snatch and dunk into any number of sauces while they're running wild during the summer months. They also freeze very, very well.

If you need to use up the ingredients for tacos or tostadas but also need to get your family into the car and off to practice or a game or a recital or a rehearsal, burritos (or chimichangas) are your best friend. Endlessly portable, self-contained, healthy, and hearty, you cannot go wrong with burritos. The only catch is that you have to have large flour tortillas in the pantry. The biggest benefit? Burrito recipes can be doubled, and they freeze like a dream.

Quesadillas

Quesadillas are great if your family really likes their taco meat to be buddies with melty, gooey cheese. 8 taco shells
1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained

You can make a dump dinner with your oven, stovetop, or, my favorite, the crockpot. Many people like to make dump dinners with easy ingredients that are not expensive to buy. A variety of vegetables are a favorite, such as green beans, potatoes, carrots, etc. Using vegetable or chicken stock also makes quick and delicious dinners. Some great dump dinner dishes are casseroles, soups, stews, and sheet pan dinners. 

What Do You Need to Make a Dump Dinner?

  • Any ingredient specified in the recipe
  • Your oven or stove

Any of these will work to make a quick and easy dump dinner for a busy night! 

Crockpot Dump Dinners

Crockpots are a time saver when you know you will be busy during the day and only have a little free time to prep a big meal. However, you can still make a delicious and hearty dinner that your family will devour. The best crockpot meals are stews, soups, and dinners where the ingredients are all cooked together. Here are some of the easiest crockpot dump dinners.

Slow-Cooker Pork Fajitas

To make slow cooker pork fajitas, you need:

  • One pork boneless loin roast, trimmed of fat
  • Two tablespoons of fajita seasoning
  • One cup of thick and chunky salsa
  • One bag of frozen stir-fried bell peppers and onions, thawed- you can also use fresh
  • Two packages of tortillas for burritos
  • Two cups shredded Mexican-style taco cheese (8 ounces)
  • One cup of sour cream, if desired

Gather all of your ingredients. Place your pork on the bottom of the slow cooker, and season with the fajita seasoning. Pour salsa over the top of the pork. Cook on low for eight to ten hours. Shred the pork with a fork and then return to the crockpot. Next, pour the thawed bag of bell peppers and onions into the crockpot and cook for 30 more minutes on high. You can either eat this dish as soup or strain out the juice and eat it in a tortilla topped with cheese.

You can replace the pork with chicken and cook the same, using 4-5 thawed chicken breasts. If you are using fresh vegetables, cook them with the pork from the beginning of cook time.

Classic Pot Roast

Pot roast is a family favorite. It is so simple to make and has very little prep involved. The ingredients you need are: 

  • Roast
  • A pack of carrots
  • Onion
  • Red potatoes
  • Beef stock

Season your roast in any way you desire. Place your roast on the bottom of the crockpot. Next, place your onions and carrots on top of the roast. Cover with beef stock and cook on low for four hours or high for three hours. Add the red potatoes and cook for two-four more hours on low or one to two more hours on high. Shred your roast, and then enjoy! 

Mississippi Pot Roast 

Mississippi pot roast is a yummy alternative to the classic pot roast. Especially if you like a little bit of heat in your dinner. The ingredients you need are: 

  • Four Pounds of roast chuck
  • 1/4 cup of pepperoncini 
  • One pack of brown gravy 
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • One ranch packet 
  • 3/4 cup of beef broth

Season and sear your roast chuck before placing it in the bottom of the crockpot. You do not have to do this step, but it does help cook the roast faster. Top the roast with brown gravy, ranch, butter, and pepperoncini. Add the 3/4 cup of beef broth to the bottom of the crockpot. Cook on low for eight hours or high for four to six hours. You will know your roast is done when it easily shreds with two forks.

Chili

Chili is a staple in many homes across America, especially in the winter months. This is because the prep is easy, and the ingredients are simple! There are many different ways to make chili. One of the most traditional ways only requires these ingredients: 

  • Two to four cans of kidney beans. You can also substitute a few cans for chili beans. 
  • A large can or jar of tomato juice
  • One pound of ground hamburger
  • Chili seasoning
  • Diced green chilis

Brown the hamburger. Next, drain the juice from the kidney beans. Then add the ingredients to your crockpot.  After adding the ingredients, mix in the chili seasoning. Then cook on low for six to eight hours or high for three to four hours. Now you have a delicious meal for dinner in three ways!

  • 32 ounces of chicken broth
  • One onion diced
  • Three to four cans of white northern beans
  • Three chicken breasts
  • One teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of oregano
  • Two teaspoons of cumin
  • One to two cans of corn
  • Heavy cream

Place chicken on the bottom of the crockpot. Add all the ingredients to the crockpot, stir, and cook on low for six to eight hours.  Add a small amount of heavy cream and stir to thicken the soup. Continue adding the heavy cream until the consistency is how you like it. Alternatively, if you do not want to add dairy, you can make a thickening slurry with one can of white kidney beans and one cup of soup by mixing both in a blender. Then add to the crockpot and mix to thicken. Continue cooking for 15-20 minutes. Then serve hot with any toppings you like, such as cheese, sour cream, or tortillas. 

Chicken Noodle Soup 

Chicken noodle soup is not just for when you are sick. This classic comfort food is simple and easy to make for any day of the week. What you need to make this delicious crockpot meal is:

  • Four to five chicken breasts
  • One chopped onion
  • One bag of carrots
  • Minced garlic 
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • 10 cups of chicken broth
  • One bag of egg noodles, around eight ounces.

Season the chicken with salt and pepper and lay it on the bottom of the crockpot. Add in the rest of the vegetables and seasoning. Cover with the chicken broth and cook on low heat for six hours.  How to Precook Frozen Chicken Using a Crock Pot

When a recipe calls for cooked chicken, it extends the prep and cooking time quite a lot if you don't have cooked chicken on hand. You can buy it at the supermarket, but it can be expensive to buy prepared foods.

A simple solution is to put your crock pot to work, without having to even thaw out chicken in advance. Once you've cooked a good amount, you can freeze it in recipe sized portions (about a pound each) either diced or shredded or whole for versatility.

This is how to precook chicken so you'll always be prepared for a stress free dinner.

What you need:

3 pounds (about seven breasts) frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts

2 cans chicken broth

salt and pepper

Directions:

1. Place frozen chicken evenly layered into the crock pot that is NOT turned on. Placing frozen chicken in a hot crock pot can crack the pot.

2. Pour chicken broth over the chicken. Add salt and pepper.

3. Plug in crock pot, set on low setting. Do not place on high setting, as the chicken will not thaw properly and may leave under-cooked parts throughout.

4. Cook on low heat for 8 – 9 hours. Chicken is done when no longer pink inside and has reached a temperature of 170 degrees F with a meat thermometer.

5. Remove chicken from crock pot and place into freezer bags (portioned to your recipe preferences). Refrigerate any chicken that will be used within 3 days, freeze the rest.

6. When you're ready to use the refrigerated cooked chicken, heat according to the recipe instructions. When you're ready to use the frozen cooked chicken, defrost in refrigerator or microwave and use according to the recipe instructions.

German Sauerbraten with Cabbage and Apples

Ingredients:

2 cups fat-free, low-sodium beef broth
1 cup water
1 cup cider vinegar
½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground cloves
1 (4 pound) top round roast or eye-of-round roast, all visible fat discarded
2 teaspoons canola oil
1 medium Vidalia onion, thinly sliced and quartered
5 cups shredded red cabbage
2 large semitart apples, such as Gala or Jonathan, sliced
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Water as needed plus ¼ cup cold water, divided use
⅓ cup crushed low-fat ginger snaps

Directions:

1. In a glass or other nonmetallic bowl large enough to hold the beef, stir together the broth, 1 cup water, the vinegar, sugar, allspice, ginger, and cloves. Add the beef, turning to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 8 to 24 hours, turning occasionally. At cooking time, drain the beef and pat dry, reserving the marinade.

2. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat, swirling to coat the bottom. Cook the beef for 10 minutes, or until browned on all sides.

3. Spread the onion in the slow cooker. Place the beef on the onion. Pour 2 cups of reserved marinade over the beef. Cover and refrigerate the remaining marinade.

4. Cook, covered, on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 2 ½ hours.

5. Quickly arrange the cabbage and apples around the beef and re-cover the slow cooker. Cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 2 ½ hours, or until the beef is tender and registers 155°F to 160°F on an instant-read thermometer.

6. If using the high setting, change it to low. Quickly transfer the beef to a cutting board, leaving the cabbage mixture in the slow cooker. Re-cover the slow cooker. Let the beef stand, covered, for about 15 minutes, or until it registers 160°F to 165°F on the thermometer. Slice the beef.

7. During the standing time, pour the 2 cups refrigerated marinade into a medium saucepan. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Boil for 5 minutes. Pour into a liquid measuring cup. Add enough water to measure 1 ¾ cups. Pour into the pan. Reduce the heat to medium.

8. Put the cornstarch in a small bowl. Add the remaining ¼ cup cold water, whisking to dissolve. Gradually stir into the gravy. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Whisk in the ginger snaps.

9. Transfer the sliced beef and cabbage mixture to plates. Spoon the gravy over the beef.

  • 4 ounces diced green chiles
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 5 corn tortillas
  • 1/2 cup sliced ripe olives

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, salsa, tomato paste, beans, corn, green chiles, cumin, and garlic powder. Mix well.

2. Spoon 1 cup of the mixture into the bottom of a 4-quart crockpot; spread evenly.

3. Top with 1 1/4 tortillas, cutting to fit as necessary. Spread on 1/4 of the remaining tomato mixture.

4. Repeat layers 2 more times, ending with the rest of the tomato mixture; spread evenly over the top.

5. Top with the sliced olives. Cover and cook on LOW for 4-5 hours.
