Fishing is a favorite pastime for many American families. Casting a line and awaiting the perfect moment to reel in your catch… few things are more exhilarating than that. And to share that feeling with loved one? Simply the best.

If you happen to living in an urban setting or nowhere near the water, it can be challenging to make the time to go enjoy this family hobby. However, if you have the means to consider purchasing a second home, or if you’re looking to make a move to somewhere with plenty of fishing nearby, you’ll be excited to explore this list of affordable fishing towns.

According to a comprehensive study from The Outdoor Foundation and Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, in 2022, 18 percent of Americans aged 6 and above went fishing at least once, up from 17 percent in 2021. This amounts to over 54.5 million people who fished that year—an increase of 2.1 million compared to the previous year. The participation rate and the total number of individuals who fished were just slightly below the all-time highs reached in 2020.

Methodology

To determine the most affordable fishing towns, Moms Who Think reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Only places with at least 100 owner-occupied housing units and a federally recognized hunting area with fishing available within a 15-mile radius were included. Spatial data on hunting areas specified by available game is from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

If your family enjoys hard-boiled eggs, then you've likely encountered some frustration when trying to peel them. Whether the shells don't separate from the egg, or the skin inside doesn't peel off, it is a real drag when you end up wasting eggs that simply don't want to peel. And with egg costs what they are, no one wants to waste a thing! But guess what! There are a few quick and easy steps to ensure you get perfectly hard-boiled eggs that are easy to peel every single time. Keep reading to find out how.

Step 1: This is probably the most important step. Despite what you may or may not have read, experimentation proves that the only way to start your hard-boiled eggs is in water that’s already a rolling boil. Some foodies may claim that it’s important to put your eggs into the water before it’s too hot to avoid breaking but while that may be true, it won’t get you an easy peel. Make sure that water is boiling! You might have an egg or two break on you when you put them in, but one lost egg is worth it for an easy peel!

Step 2: This step, of course, is pretty standard. Boil your eggs until cooked through. This takes about 10-15 minutes.

Step 3: After your eggs are done cooking, immediately transfer your eggs to an ice bath. This transfer from extreme hot to extreme cold (similar to what we did in step 1, only backwards) will help keep the shell from sticking to the egg. Allow your eggs to get cold before peeling.

*Moms Who Think Pro-Peeling Tip: When peeling your eggs, it’s important to make sure you get under the inside sac that’s between the egg white and the shell. Pulling this layer off will also give you an easier peel.

5 Easy Ways to Make Perfect Sweet Potatoes https://www.momswhothink.com/how-to-cook-sweet-potatoes/ https://www.momswhothink.com/how-to-cook-sweet-potatoes/#respond Sun, 27 Oct 2024 17:13:52 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=252741&preview=true&preview_id=252741 The post 5 Easy Ways to Make Perfect Sweet Potatoes appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Sweet potatoes are often relegated to being a Thanksgiving side dish, but they're so much more. In fact, in addition to being super nutritious, they're also quite versatile. If you're looking for some tasty ideas to incorporate them into your meals year-round, look no further. Here are a few ideas to get your culinary juices flowing. Behold, five surefire ways to whip up tasty taters.

Sweet Potato Casserole
There are so many options when it comes to cooking with sweet potatoes.

How to Prepare Sweet Potatoes

The first step to cooking the perfect sweet potatoes is determining how to prepare them. Sweet potatoes can be great for side dishes and quick weeknight meals because they don’t require much prep work. Even if you decide to roast them in the oven, it’s often as simple as cutting them up and placing them on a baking sheet.

How you prepare your sweet potatoes is going to depend on the cooking method you choose. You might choose to peel them or leave the peel on, depending on your preferences and the recipe you’re using. Aside from cutting up your sweet potatoes, the only other preparation needed is usually scrubbing the outside of the potatoes to remove any dirt.

Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

You might be looking for an easy way to cook sweet potatoes simply because you like them. It’s no surprise since sweet potatoes can be pretty delicious! However, sweet potatoes also have a ton of health benefits and can be a nutritious part of any meal. Considering the many nutrients you’ll find in sweet potatoes, they may be beneficial for:

  • Gut health
  • Brain health
  • Inflammation
  • Vision health

Sweet potatoes are filled with nutrients such as beta carotene, which is an antioxidant that’s good for your vision, and vitamin A which may help with inflammation in the gut. No matter how you eat them, sweet potatoes offer many nutrients that aren’t found in other vegetables.

How to Roast Sweet Potatoes

Roasting sweet potatoes in the oven is one of the most delicious and simplest ways to cook them. If you cut them up and season them ahead of time, you end up with perfectly cooked sweet potatoes in much less time than it takes to cook them whole.

You can also get the perfect crisp on your sweet potato rounds by roasting them in the oven. Here are the steps to roasting the perfect sweet potatoes:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F
  • Cut up your sweet potatoes into chunks and toss them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and other desired seasonings
  • Place them on a baking sheet or roasting pan
  • Cook sweet potatoes for 30-35 minutes until they’re tender and golden brown
  • Remove sweet potatoes from the oven and allow them to cool

Roasting sweet potatoes is a simple way to cook them and you can experiment with a variety of flavors. You might keep it simple with olive oil, salt, and pepper or you can try a sweeter flavor by drizzling them with maple syrup.

How to Microwave Sweet Potatoes

While microwaving doesn’t always lead to the best texture, if you’re in a pinch, microwaving your sweet potatoes is the quickest way to cook them. Microwaving sweet potatoes makes them perfectly tender and you can cook enough for the whole family in less than 10 minutes.

If you’re craving sweet potatoes but don’t have time to roast them in the oven, follow these steps to microwave your sweet potato:

  • Wash the outside of the sweet potato
  • Take a fork and pierce the sweet potato several times
  • Place the sweet potato on a plate or microwave-safe dish and cook it for 5 minutes, turning it over halfway through
  • Remove the sweet potato if it’s tender and can be pierced easily with a fork
  • If not, continue to cook your sweet potato for an additional 30 seconds until finished
  • Cut the sweet potato and add desired toppings and seasonings

While microwaving sweet potatoes won’t give you the same texture as grilling or roasting them, it is a quick and easy option if you don’t have time to use another method.

How to Grill Sweet Potatoes

While sweet potatoes may not be the first vegetable you think of throwing on the grill, they can be a healthy alternative to some other sides you might see at a barbecue. Also, grilling sweet potatoes can give them a unique flavor.

Here’s the best way to grill sweet potatoes:

  • Heat the grill to medium-high heat
  • After slicing the potatoes into rounds ¼ to ½ inch thick, season them and toss them in olive oil or another similar type of oil
  • Place the sweet potatoes on the grill
  • Cook them for 5-7 minutes on each side
  • When the sweet potatoes are tender and you can easily pierce them with a fork, remove them from the grill

After grilling your sweet potato rounds, you can serve them as is, add them to a salad, or even serve them as a side with a homemade dressing. The exact amount of time it will take will depend on the type of grill you have, so check them periodically to prevent them from burning.

Pressure Cooker Sweet Potato Curry
Sweet potatoes are simple to cook and can be included in a variety of recipes.

How to Boil Sweet Potatoes

There are many ways to cook sweet potatoes, but boiling them is a fool-proof method and is quick enough for busy weeknights or last-minute meals. It’s also a healthy way to avoid any added oils or other unnecessary ingredients.

Here’s the best way to boil sweet potatoes:

  • Add water to a large pot and bring it to a boil
  • Salt the water to taste
  • Add whole sweet potatoes or sweet potato chunks to the pot
  • Bring the heat down to medium-high
  • Boil sweet potatoes until they are tender and cooked all the way through (about 15-20 minutes for chunks or 40-50 minutes for whole sweet potatoes)

Prior to boiling your sweet potatoes, you can peel them and cut them up or you can throw the whole sweet potatoes in there with the peel on. How you prepare them will depend on what you’re using them for. Keep in mind the cooking time will change based on whether they’re whole or cut in slices.

How to Steam Sweet Potatoes

Steaming sweet potatoes is another easy way to cook them at home. This method is similar to boiling but in this case, the steam actually cooks the sweet potatoes, not the water.

Here’s a simple way to boil sweet potatoes:

  • Place about an inch of water in a pan or skillet
  • Cut up your sweet potatoes
  • Once the water starts to boil, add your sweet potatoes to the pan
  • Keep the water boiling and cook them for about 25-30 minutes, until they’re tender
  • Once they’re ready, drain and remove them from the pan

If you have a steamer basket, all you have to do is place the sweet potatoes in the steamer basket and add it once the water is boiling. You can also use a metal strainer in place of a steamer basket.

Finding the Perfect Sweet Potato Dish

Sweet potatoes can be a delicious and nutritious vegetable to add to any meal. No matter what’s for dinner, you can add steamed sweet potatoes to a salad or protein bowl, mash them for a sweet side, or even cut them up and make roasted sweet potato fries.

The best thing about sweet potatoes is you can easily add them to any meal if you’re in a pinch, but you can also make a more elaborate sweet potato dish if you have more time. Sweet potatoes are full of nutrients and can be a beneficial part of any meal.

When you think about lobster rolls, your mind likely heads north to New England. After all, anecdotally, the lobster roll originated in Connecticut at Perry's. That said, you don't have to live in New England to enjoy one of these delicacies. Thanks to modern shipping options, restaurants and food trucks can order up Maine lobster — which is found in the northern Atlantic — and receive the goods in record time to create authentic lobster rolls for lobster lovers nationwide. And while there are Florida spiny lobster in warmer ocean waters, it's Maine lobsters that make a lobster roll a lobster roll. Or is it?

Types of Lobster Rolls

First things first, what type of lobster roll do you prefer? There are generally two types: the Connecticut lobster roll and the Maine lobster roll. Here's what sets them apart:

Connecticut-Style Lobster Roll

A Connecticut-style lobster roll is one that is served warm and bathed in butter. The bright red juicy lobster is served up on a toasted split-open bun. It's divine!

Maine-Style Lobster Roll

A Maine-style lobster roll is one that is served up cold, with chilled chunks of lobster meat coated in a light mayo dressing and doused in salt, pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon, all housed in a toasted split-top bun. Also divine.

Manhattan-Style Lobster Roll

Arguably the least-consumed lobster roll, Manhattan-style. Primarily enjoyed by New Yorkers, it's essentially the same as a Maine-style with the addition of fresh celery for an added crunch.

Where to Find the Best Lobster Roll in Florida

As we've already covered, the fact that lobster rolls originated in New England and are typically made with Maine lobster doesn't mean you'll only find them in New England. In fact, you can get an amazing lobster roll anywhere thanks to lobster distributors and dry ice. People typically seek out fresh seafood, however, when vacationing in warm-weather destinations or during the summer months. There's just something about a chilled shrimp cocktail and a beer by the sea, right?

When you head to South Florida, where it's warm pretty much year-round, you can also get a lobster roll year-round. In our extensive lobster roll research throughout The Sunshine State, we have uncovered what we find to be — hands-down — the most amazing lobster roll in all of Florida. To experience it, you have to had to the southernmost point of the continental U.S.: Key West.

Key West Lobster Roll Options

Key West is known for its laid-back beachy vibes. People vacation there from all over the world, intent on indulging in a carefree respite from reality. While you can enjoy copious alcohol options, you can also find several local options for a lobster roll.

On a recent return visit, we tried a new lobster roll restaurant that opened recently on Key West's famous Duval Street. And it was good. But it wasn't the best …

If you're looking for the absolute top-notch, gold-medal-winning lobster roll in all of Florida, go to Eaton Street Seafood Market in Key West. There you will find a Maine-style lobster roll that you'll dream about and always return to.

This beloved locally owned establishment has been serving up fresh seafood since 2007, and today, they not only serve customers in person, but they ship now too. But here's what we assume is the secret to it being the best: they use Florida lobsters. This particular lobster doesn't have claws, so the tail is the meat you'll enjoy in an Eaton Street lobster roll. Additionally, these lobsters are abundant in numbers, which means the price is typically lower than the New England counterpart.

The Eaton Street Seafood Market lobster roll is indisputably the best lobster roll in all of Florida!

So next time you're in Key West with the family, and after you've worked up an appetite exploring the many kid-friendly things to do there, swing by Eaton Street Market and grab lobster roll. And while you're at it, the smoked fish dip is pretty spectacular as well!

Bon appétit!

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 4 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 Tablespoon lime juice
  • Toppings: chopped cilantro, sour cream, diced avocado, shredded cheese, tortilla chips

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  6. Ladle the soup into bowls and top with your favorite toppings like chopped cilantro, sour cream, diced avocado, shredded cheese, or tortilla chips.

Infant Swing Recall: Make Sure It’s Not Yours https://www.momswhothink.com/recall-alert/ https://www.momswhothink.com/recall-alert/#respond Fri, 11 Oct 2024 20:45:39 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=250194&preview=true&preview_id=250194 The post Infant Swing Recall: Make Sure It’s Not Yours appeared first on Moms Who Think.

If you have a newborn, odds are quite high that you also probably have an infant swing. After all, there is perhaps no better way to lull a little one to sleep than to the rhythmic cadence, soft sounds, and spinning mobile that only a baby swing provides. That said, the popular brand Fisher-Price issued a recall on more than 2 million of their swings due to suffocation hazards after five infant deaths were reported.

Check your swing, parents. The swing that has been recalled is the Fisher-Price Snuga Infant swing. This includes all models of Snuga swings, which include My Little Snugabunny Cradle ‘n Swing (V0099), My Little Snugabear Cradle ‘n Swing (CHM56), Snow Leopard Swing (HBM23), My Little SnugaMonkey Cradle ‘n Swing (X7051), and the My Little Snugapuppy Cradle ‘n Swing (X7345) among others. (Find a complete list of models and SKUs recalled here.)

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which issued the recall, approximately 2.1 million swings were sold in the United States, another 99,000 in Canada, and 500 in Mexico.

The hazard is that if the swing is used for sleeping purposes, or if bedding is added to it for sleeping purposes, the headrest and seat pad insert can cause suffocation.

The swings that have been recalled were sold at Toys R Us, Walmart, Target and Amazon. If you purchased one of these swings, you are entitled to a refund or repair. To learn more, contact Fisher-Price at (855) 853-6224 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.service.mattel.com and click “Recall & Safety Alerts” or www.service.mattel.com/us/recall.aspx.

Do you dream of living off-grid or simply away from the hustle and bustle of the city or even suburbia? Perhaps the mountains are calling you’re name. If the siren song of a quiet life in a quiet mountain town is drawing you in, we can help you find a new place to call home — at a relatively affordable rate. In fact, you can grab a home in one of these mountain towns for a reasonable $114,000.

To determine the most affordable mountain towns, Moms Who Think reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Only places with at least 500 residents where at least 5% of housing units are vacant for seasonal or recreational use that intersect a mountain were considered. Mountain spatial boundaries are from the GMBA Mountain Inventory v2 of EarthEnv.

I Tried 8 Different Store-Bought Jarred Salsa Brands, and This One is the Best https://www.momswhothink.com/best-jarred-salsa-brands/ https://www.momswhothink.com/best-jarred-salsa-brands/#respond Thu, 03 Oct 2024 15:49:30 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=248254&preview=true&preview_id=248254 The post I Tried 8 Different Store-Bought Jarred Salsa Brands, and This One is the Best appeared first on Moms Who Think.

It’s a crowd-pleaser. It’s a game-day favorite. It’s both a dip and a condiment. Perhaps the most universally loved food, salsa — particularly the jarred kind — comes in all different flavors with a variety of different ingredients. While homemade salsa will always be the best, sometimes grabbing a jar at the store is the only or better option.

We stopped by our local Publix grocery store and perusing all of the different jarred salsa options, it was easy to get overwhelmed. Restaurant-style, chunky, mild, medium, ghost (!), all-natural, gluten-free … you get the picture. It got us thinking, though. All things being equal — plain-old mild salsa — which of the jarred store-bought options is the best?

Allow me to share a short disclaimer: I realize that salsa preference — as with most foods — is completely personal to the person eating it. For example, my husband took a blind taste test, and his No. 1 was my No. 6. But since I’m the one writing the article, my preference wins.

So here we go. I picked up eight of the most commonly found jarred salsa options (at least where we live) and put them to the test. Each jar was 16 ounces and “mild” flavor. Here’s what rose to the top.

8. Chi-Chi’s

  • $3.39
  • First ingredient: Tomatoes in tomato juice (contains citric acid to acidify)

If you’re looking to “Let the fiesta begin!”, then Chi-Chi’s claims to be your best bet. However, this one ranks last on our list. It’s indeed chunky, but also incredibly watery (it’s the third ingredient on the list), which makes us wonder if that’s how they keep the price down (it’s the cheapest option on our list). It also tastes mass-produced and oddly sweet. While it wouldn’t be the first one we grab, it could do in a pinch.

7. Muir Glen Organic

  • $6.09
  • All-organic
  • Gluten-free
  • First ingredient: Organic tomato puree (organic tomato paste, water)

While Muir Glen gets bonus points for the purity of its ingredients, we found the flavors to be somewhat watered down and bland. The ingredient list confirms it’s all organic, so at the very least you can feel good about what you’re putting in your body. And while chunky, it’s still able to be transported by restaurant-style chips.

6. On the Border

  • $3.99
  • Gluten-free
  • First ingredient: Tomatoes

Full disclaimer: On the Border was my husband’s top pick. I wasn’t as enamored. While it has a short and easy-to-read ingredient list, one of those ingredients is sugar, and that came through in the taste. It was all pretty heavy on the smoky flavor, of which I’m not a huge fan. Bonus points, however, for consistency. It was less chunky and more restaurant-style, which made transporting on a chip a smooth experience.

5. Green Mountain Gringo

  • $5.99
  • All-natural
  • Gluten-free
  • First ingredient: Tomatoes

We like the fact that Green Mountain Gringo incorporates some more unusual ingredients into their salsa – pasilla peppers and tomatillos, for example. In terms of quality, it’s there. This one is more a matter of personal taste. I found it to taste almost like gazpacho or tomato juice. It has great texture though, and it plays well with tortilla chips.

4. Newman’s Own

  • $3.49
  • Gluten-free
  • First ingredient: Diced tomatoes in tomato juice

Right out of the gate, Newman’s Own gets love for its mission: “Let’s give it all away. 100% profits to help kids.” It also has a pretty clean list of ingredients. That said, I found it has a sweet flavor, which is odd given there’s no sugar. While it says it’s chunky, I found it to be smooth, more like restaurant-style salsa. Chips can handle this salsa nicely.

3. Tostito’s

  • $3.91
  • First ingredient: Tomato puree (water, tomato paste)

Another full disclosure: Tostito’s salsa is sort of like my love for Totino’s pizza. It reminds me of my childhood when it would be served at family gathering with some fresh avocado mixed in and topped with shredded cheddar. SO good! The reason it didn’t take the gold is because of it’s ingredients, which are somewhat dicey and salt-filled. It’s super chunky, too, which can lead to some breakage if you’re chips are too thin. Go with thicker tortilla chips or even Frito’s Scoops for this level of chunky.

2. Ousley Ouch

  • $5.49
  • All-natural
  • Gluten-free
  • First ingredient: Tomatoes (tomatoes, tomato juice, tomato puree, salt, citric acid, calcium chloride)

Ousley is known for its bold flavors that put the Ouch in the name. Ghost is the hottest, which I wouldn’t dare try. And since we’re playing on an even playing field, we went the complete opposite direction with the mild. And yet! It still had a bit of a bite. It’s flavors taste fresh, not too smoky or sweet. The texture, too, was pretty close to perfection.

1. Mateo’s

  • $5.49
  • All-natural
  • Gluten-free
  • First ingredient: Tomatoes

They call it right out of the gate with their motto: “Not responsible for obsession.” And while I don’t consider myself obsessed (yet), as a first-time Mateo’s taster, I was definitely interested in going on a second date. Its texture is thin but not watery, and works well with any tortilla chip. They call it gourmet, and they back it up with the flavor. A clean and easy-to-comprehend ingredient list makes it a solid gold prize-winner in my book.

It’s no secret that gun violence is rampant in the United States, and according to World Population Review, the U.S. takes the blue ribbon when it comes to the most school shootings in the world. In fact, according to the American Journal of Medicine, school shootings are 41 times more likely in the United States than in any other developed nation.

The Washington Post reports that more than 348,000 students have experienced gun violence at school since the Columbine shootings in Littleton, CO, back in 1999. To put things into perspective, there are currently 115,171 schools in the United States, and in 2022 alone, there were 300 mass shootings in American K-12 schools.

Here, we’re looking at the deadliest school shootings (excluding colleges) in the U.S. between 1982 and September 2024. Data was sourced from Statista.com.

I Tried 8 Different Frozen Pizzas and This One is the Best https://www.momswhothink.com/best-frozen-pizzas/ https://www.momswhothink.com/best-frozen-pizzas/#respond Wed, 25 Sep 2024 17:04:17 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=236274&preview=true&preview_id=236274 The post I Tried 8 Different Frozen Pizzas and This One is the Best appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Whether you’re stumped about what to eat for dinner or you are working with a minimal budget, you know what’s always there for you? Frozen, store-bought pizza. That’s right. This freezer-aisle favorite stands alone in so many respects: value, flavor, comfort … value.

You may already have your favorite frozen pizza brand, but if that’s the case, you’re likely overlooking some real winners that may take over as your new No. 1. Well, I did the work for you (you’re welcome). I tasted the top-rated store-bought frozen pizzas. Here are the 8 I tried, ranked in order from good to best. Keep scrolling for your new frozen pizza hero!

8. Motor City Pizza Co.

Chalk one up for Detroit-style pizza right out of the gate. Motor City Pizza is a real winner, with its thick, rectangular crust and deep dish canvas ready for any kind of toppings you can imagine. Choose from pepperoni, cheese, supreme and all the other trusty topping standbys. With options like “Three Meat” and “Ultimate Meat,” or “Supreme” and “Ultimate Supreme,” Motor City proves it’s not here to play. Give the people options and a Detroit-size amount of flavor, and they will come. Find it at Wal-Mart, Costco, Target, Kroger and other big-box food retailers.

7. Home Run Inn

Step up to the plate — literally — and enjoy this winner, winner pizza dinner. While there are, in fact, Home Run Inn restaurants, you needn’t live near one in order to enjoy this perennial favorite pizza. The signature-style crust, described as “tavern-style buttery and flaky,” most midwesterners will agree this is a worthy top 10 contender in the frozen pizza space. There’s nothing over-the-top in the way of flavor options. Look for standards like pepperoni, sausage, veggie and the like, but big bonus points for the brand for providing an “inspiration” section of delicious toppers to garnish your pie. A real dinger, I tell ya.

6. DiGiorno Pizzeria Thin Hand-Tossed Margherita

You may remember the commercials from back in the day: “It’s not delivery. It’s DiGiorno.” That is the key indicator of what you can expect from this fan favorite. DiGiorno also leads the pack in terms of options … SO. Many. Options. Rising crust (pictured), stuffed crust, hand-tossed, thin crust, gluten-free, Detroit-style, classic … and those are just the crust options, which some people will argue is the most important part of the pizza. Regardless, the Pizzeria Thin Hand-Tossed Margherita pizza is a lighter alternative and features a thin stone-baked crust and is topped with Roma tomatoes, basil and four types of cheese. SO good!

5. Newman’s Own Thin & Crispy Sausage & Pepperoni

You don’t have to be the president of the Paul Newman Fan Club to appreciate his complete line of products and the philanthropic bent of the brand. But you do have to have amazing taste in frozen pizza to appreciate the beauty of the Newman’s Own Thin & Crispy Sausage & Pepperoni (Supreme being a VERY close second). Its thin crust is crispy yet understated at once. Piled high with Italian sausage and uncured pepperoni, this one is a real stand-out in the freezer section.

4. Tombstone Cheese Pizza

Some folks will fondly remember the classic Tombstone cheese pizza from their childhood. This pizza definitely conjures nostalgic feelings when you pop one in the oven. With plenty of cheese on a crust of the perfect width, you simply cannot go wrong with this pizza.

3. Totino’s

I realize these may be fightin’ words, but Totino’s is the pizza soundtrack of my youth. While I can no longer get my absolute favorite flavor — Mexican — at my local grocer, I still enjoy the supreme and triple cheese all the same. It’s a standout in the frozen pizza space, and it has staying power for a reason. Because it’s THAT good.

2. Red Baron Brick Oven Pepperoni

Red Baron Brick Oven Pepperoni is a pretty standard but nonetheless stellar frozen pizza brand, and it’s available at a very affordable price point. The crust is the perfect thickness, and there is just the right amount of cheese and pepp.

1. Screamin’ Sicilian Supremus Maximus

Alright, when you want delivery-caliber pizza cooked on the fly in the comfort of home and for a slightly less than delivery, the Screamin’ Sicilian Supremus Maximus is the only way to go. There is absolutely NO skimping on toppings. In fact, there is SUCH a bounty of meats and veggies atop a thick bed of cheese that they drop off onto your plate, leaving you with a great last bite as you scoop them up.

Downtown areas were defined as the census tracts that fall at least 50% within the 1.8-mile radius around a city hall. Boundary definitions are from the U.S. Census Bureau and are for 2022. Only downtowns in principal cities with at least 200,000 residents in metropolitan statistical areas were considered. City hall coordinates are also from the Census Bureau.

Depending on your age, you or your kids or grandkids may have heard these sounds. But children born after a certain time period have likely never heard them. (Looking at you, Millenials and Gen Z!) Take a walk back in time and see if any of these sounds strike a nostalgic chord in you. And make a game of it by clicking the link to the sounds and seeing if you’re kids can identify them.

Rotary-Dial Telephone

The formerly familiar swooosh as the caller rotated the dial clockwise to the “finger stop” and then the click-click-click as the dial returned counter-clockwise to the start position is now a novelty application that you can install on your iPhones for nostalgic yuks. Adolescents waiting in line nearby will wonder what the heck that sound is, while we older fogies will know you’re poking fun at us and our ancient ways. Listen to the sound of a rotary phone dialing a number here.

Manual Typewriter

Manual typewriters had an entire subset of unique sounds that made them immediately identifiable…at one time. The keys clacked loudly as they struck the paper, the carriage lifted up with a distinct clunk when the shift key was employed, and then there was the ping of the bell warning you that you were nearing the end of the line. That meant you had to lift your left hand from the keyboard and swipe at the carriage return lever, which caused a sort of ziiiiip noise as you pushed the carriage back to the starting position. Listen to the sound of a typewriter here.

Coffee Percolator

Coffee percolators once enjoyed great popularity but were supplanted in the early 1970s by automatic drip coffee makers. The bubble, hiss was matched with an aroma that really woke folks up. Listen to a coffee percolator here.

TV Channel Selector

When announcers of yesteryear used to admonish viewers, “Don’t touch that dial!”, they were referring to the channel selector knobs found on TV sets. The standard TV dial went from 2 to 13, and you had to click on each number as you searched for one of the three channels that broadcast in your area. That meant a lot of clunk clunk-ing interspersed with the static-y sound of “snow” on the blank stations. Listen to the changing channels here.

Record Changer

Record changers allowed you to stack a selection of albums of 45s (seven-inch singles, not guns!) for your longer-term listening pleasure. Each record would make a soft slap sound as it dropped onto the turntable, a series of clicks followed as the remaining records adjusted into place and the tone arm swung over and lowered the needle into the outer grooves of the record. You’d hear the slightest scritch noise as the stylus settled just so into the vinyl and then (finally!) the music began.

Gas Station Driveway Bell

Back in the days when all gas stations were full-service, the thin black pneumatic hose that snaked across the pavement was as familiar as the fuel pumps. When vehicles drove over the hose, a loud bell ding-dinged! inside the station, alerting the attendant that he had another customer. Listen to this sound here.

TV Station Sign-Off

Before infomercials were invented, television stations actually went off the air for a few hours each night. Some of us TV-holics experienced physical withdrawal symptoms when we heard the announcer intone, “We now conclude our broadcast day…” around 2AM or so. The format varied little from station to station across the country; first a few technical details were announced (broadcast frequency, physical address of the station, etc.), then a reading of “High Flight” followed by the National Anthem, and then the steady beeeeeeeeeeeeeep tone of the test pattern. Listen to the tone here.

Cash Register

Those push buttons were clumsy, but veteran cashiers could check you out just as fast with these old-style machines as their modern counterparts do with today’s scanners. Listen to an old-school cash register here.

Film Projector

One of the jobs of the classroom A/V squad captain was to run the film projector on movie days. The rapid tick-tick-tick of the sprockets really was that loud and usually accompanied by shouts of “Turn it up!” and, of course, “Focus!” Listen to the sound of a film projector here.

Broken Record

Remember when you’d beg mom over and over for something and she’d finally yell, “You sound like a broken record!”? She wasn’t referring to pops or hisses, but the repetitive effect that happened when the needle got stuck and played the same few notes over and over and over again. Listen to a record scratch here.

22 Historic Neighborhoods Where Houses are Less Than $100,000 https://www.momswhothink.com/most-affordable-historic-neighborhoods-to-live-in/ https://www.momswhothink.com/most-affordable-historic-neighborhoods-to-live-in/#respond Tue, 10 Sep 2024 17:47:07 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=244504&preview=true&preview_id=244504 The post 22 Historic Neighborhoods Where Houses are Less Than $100,000 appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Few things are as desirable as owning a home in a beautiful historic district. Walls that can tell a century’s worth of stories, wrap-around porches perfect for an afternoon glass of iced tea, and beautiful tree-lined sidewalks on which to stroll or take a leisurely bike ride. If this sounds like your kind of neighborhood, then you’re in luck. We have cultivated a list of 50 historic neighborhoods in the United States that have affordable homes, and 22 of these places have homes that cost less than $100,000.

To determine the most affordable historic neighborhoods to live in, Moms Who Think reviewed district listings from the National Register of Historic Places and five-year data on home value from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Historic districts registered in the NRHP were ranked based on the ratio of average home value to average household income of owner-occupied housing units within their boundaries. District-level average home values were aggregated from the census tract level using spatial boundary definitions from the NRHP and the U.S. Census Bureau. Data on median home age is also from the Census Bureau. Only historic districts with at least 100 housing units in the principal cities of metropolitan statistical areas were considered.

Today’s kids are often viewed as lazy or addicted to electronics. Regardless of your thoughts on that claim, it’s arguably true that when boomers were kids, they were much more active and creative, often using their imagination to entertain themselves. Let’s take a walk down Memory Lane and take a gander at the various activities that occupied this generation’s time when they were growing up. Many of these things would be simply foreign to today’s kids, don’t you think? One is even illegal in nine American states.

Board Games

Long before there were video games, kids enjoyed playing board games. Granted this type of entertainment had been around since the early 1800s, by the mid-1950s, games like Sorry, Clue, Monopoly and Chutes and Ladders were found in homes all over the U.S.

Penny Candy Stores

Penny candy stores have been around since the late 1800s, but they enjoyed their peak in the mid-1900s as boomers would stop by after school to grab a piece of licorice or Bazooka bubble gum. These stores began to rapidly decline in popularity in the 1980s.

Drive-in movies were the creation of Richard Hollingshead, who opened the first drive-in theater on June 6, 1933, in Camden, New Jersey. This novel concept for a fun night out enjoyed its popularity through the 1950s and ’60s.

Telephone Party Lines

Party lines were an affordable option for telephone service that provided one phone line to multiple homes, or “parties.” They gained in popularity when there was a shortage of actual lines and people to install them during World War II.

TV Dinners

TV Dinner

TV dinners first became available in 1953 by C.A. Swanson & Sons. They were inspired by the fast, efficient meals served on airplanes at the time. They could be quickly heated in the oven and enjoyed in front of the television, another phenomenon that was gaining popularity in the mid-20th century.

Climbing Trees

Childhood leisure, happy kids climbing up tree and having fun in summer park. Young boy playing and climbing a tree and hanging upside down. Teen boy playing in a park.

When baby boomers were children, they were often outside from the time they got home from school till it was time to wash up for dinner. One popular activity to enjoy during outdoor time was climbing trees, which you don’t see children do much anymore.

Studying With Encyclopedias

Encyclopedia set - 10 heavy book tomes isolated

The mid-1900s brought the rise in popularity of having a home set of encyclopedias. Key players in this phenomenon were Funk & Wagnalls and the World Book encyclopedias. These were often purchased from door-to-door sales people and offered the convenience of at-home homework research instead of going to the library.

Writing to Pen Pals

There were various programs in the mid-20th century that connected kids with other children all over the world. International pen pals, and Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls pen pal programs were wildly popular as kids would exchange hand-written letters and anxiously await a response.

Playing Marbles

Boy playing with marbles on the sidewalk. retro game, having fun with marbles in the school yard at break time. Traditional game, shared section

Marbles was a top-notch activity for kids in the schoolyards. Kids would play games like rolly hole and try to play for keepsies.

Delivering a Paper Route

Paper Boy

Towns all over the country received both a morning and an evening newspaper, and it was the job of many boomers to deliver these chronicles to their neighbors.

Roller Skating

Back in the 1950s, kids took to the streets on their roller skates. Most often with metal wheels, this mode of transportation provided hours of entertainment and exercise. And you’d never see a kid in a helmet or with elbow and knee pads.

Learning Yo-Yo

Boomers likely think fondly of their youth and the various activities it included, such as yo-yo. Kids took yo-yo classes and even competed in the activity. Moves like “walk the dog,” “around the world” and “rock the baby” each required a hard focus and incredible agility.

Shooting a Slingshot

You don’t see many slingshots among today’s children, but when boomers were growing up, they were a wildly popular form of entertainment with the boys. They’d shoot everything from aluminum cans to small game and even perhaps a little sister. Today, having a slingshot intended to be used as a weapon is illegal in nine states, including California, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Washington, and Minnesota.

While some folks prefer to winter by the sea, others opt to climb aboard a snowmobile and explore the wintry wonderland around them. If you love winter weather and snowmobiling, consider moving to or buying a second home in any of these affordable towns that offer amazing snowmobiling opportunities.

To determine the most affordable snowmobiling towns, Moms Who Think reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Only places with at least 100 owner-occupied housing units overlapping official snowmobiling trails were considered. Spatial data on hiking and snowmobiling trails is from the U.S. Forest Service.

When you think about bedroom communities, visions of beautifully groomed yards and well-kept sidewalks come to mind. Imagine living in such a picturesque place. While it’s easy to think that living in such an inspiring surrounding would come with a hefty pricetag, that’s not always the case. In fact, there is one super-cute bedroom community where the median home price is less than $54,000.

To determine the most affordable bedroom communities, Moms Who Think reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Only places with at least 5,000 residents where at least 75% of workers 16 years and over commute outside the city for work that also lie within metropolitan statistical areas where the median home value is at least $300,000 were considered.

For families who love to be outdoors — hiking, camping and generally enjoying nature — the thought of living in a hiking town seems ideal. With plenty of trails to explore and vistas from which to draw inspiration, the towns on our list deliver on all counts. Better yet, though, they have homes that are incredibly affordable. In fact, you can nab a home in one of these places for less than $63,000.

To determine the most affordable hiking towns, Moms Who Think reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Only places with at least 2,500 residents and at least half a mile of hiking trail per 10 square miles of land area were included. Spatial data on hiking trails is from the U.S. Forest Service.

Now! Who’s ready to find their new home (or second home) and take a nice hike?!

The Top 50 Safest Cars for Families, Ranked https://www.momswhothink.com/safest-cars-for-families/ https://www.momswhothink.com/safest-cars-for-families/#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2024 15:02:40 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=241371&preview=true&preview_id=241371 The post The Top 50 Safest Cars for Families, Ranked appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Every parent knows that a busy family means you need a reliable car. Most importantly, though, you want a safe set of wheels to transport your kids to the various activities they have throughout the week. We set out to find the safest family cars so you can look at car buying with confidence, knowing your making a smart and safe car selection.

Methodology

To determine the safest cars for families, Moms Who Think reviewed data on accidents for 2020 to 2022 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Makes and models were ranked based on the percentage of persons involved in an accident who survived with no apparent injury. Only cars where at least 15% of accidents involve passengers younger than 18 years – a grim proxy for family-friendliness – were considered. Supplemental data on the percentage of accidents that result in vehicle rollover are also from the NHTSA and are for 2020 to 2022. Estimates of the number of cars on the road used to calculate accident incidence rates are based on recent annual sales figures, average car age, and the year a car model was first introduced to market.
