Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before I Was Diagnosed appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Imagine having a critical medical condition and not even knowing it. That’s the situation Reddit user SaltyBerlin found herself in when her gynecologist told her that she had endometriosis on her right fallopian tube and ovary. Despite having ultrasounds done due to an ectopic pregnancy (a frequent sign of endometriosis), her condition was never diagnosed — or treated.

That’s why raising awareness is so important, and there’s no better time than during Endometriosis Awareness Month, which is observed annually in March. Understanding this illness can hopefully help educate the public about its symptoms and treatments, support research efforts, and ultimately create compassion for those who sometimes suffer in silence.

What Is Endometriosis?

Pms, woman and stomach ache on a sofa from menstruation, period and cramps in a living room. Belly ache, black woman and pain from endometriosis, digestion or constipation problem on a couch at home

The stats are sobering. Endometriosis affects between 2%-10% of American women between the ages of 25 to 40, according to Johns Hopkins. Often referred to as “endo,” endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition where the lining of the uterus grows in other areas of the body, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, rectum, bladder, and even the bowel.

The problem lies in the tissue (called endometrium) itself. During a typical menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens and sheds, causing bleeding. But the endometrial tissue that lies outside the uterus can’t shed, so it creates a buildup of endometrium and blood. The neighboring tissue may become irritated, forming scar tissue that can lead to adhesions.

Why Does Endometriosis Happen?

It’s not known exactly why endometriosis occurs. One theory is that endometrial cells migrate from inside the uterus to other parts of the body. It's also often attributed to a hormone imbalance, which causes cells to scatter throughout the pelvic region. Some researchers also think that endometriosis is the result of a weakened immune system that's unable to prevent cells from spreading.

One thing is certain: multiple studies have shown that endometriosis is hereditary. When a person has a first-degree relative (think a parent, sibling, or child) who has the condition, those women are five to seven times more likely to have endometriosis, too

What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?

Endometriosis has a host of symptoms, but intense pelvic pain is by far the biggest indicator. This pain can be so overwhelming that it may prevent people from participating in normal everyday activities. Additionally, heavy blood flow (to the point that you could have blood in your urine or poop) is another symptom. Even going to the bathroom might cause you to double over in pain, contributing to tummy troubles like constipation, bloating, and diarrhea. Pain during sex and excessive fatigue are also common.

How Does Endometriosis Affect Infertility?

It’s estimated that one in five women will suffer a miscarriage. For women with endometriosis, the risk increases to one in four. And while ectopic pregnancy might affect one in 100 women, that number more than doubles for those suffering from endometriosis.

On top of an increased risk for miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies, endometriosis can cause infertility. In fact, endometriosis is often cited as the underlying reason for infertility, according to a study published in the National Library of Science. The inflammation caused by this condition may create obstructions that block the egg from moving through the fallopian tube, affecting embryo implantation and impeding ovulation altogether.

How Is Endometriosis Diagnosed and Treated?

Unfortunately, endometriosis isn’t always easy to diagnose, since its symptoms appear as an exaggerated version of the menstrual cycle. That’s why it’s critical for people who are enduring these symptoms to speak to their doctor. Your OB-GYN will probably perform a pelvic exam to determine if there are any cysts on the reproductive organs or order an ultrasound or MRI to look for visible signs of endometriosis.

A more invasive (but highly accurate) way to test for endometriosis is by laparoscopy. Under anesthesia, your surgeon will make a small incision near your navel and then use a laparoscope (which is like a tiny camera) to check for endometrial growths.

Endometriosis does not have a cure, but there are options to treat this condition. Pain management is a priority, and medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed. Some patients receive hormonal treatments (think birth control pills, IUDs, etc.) to help regulate menstrual flow. Surgery — such as a laparoscopy or excision surgery — is very effective in removing endometrial lesions and tissue.

Many women endure the pain that comes with endometriosis, but there are treatment options. Education is essential, and knowing what endometriosis is (and more importantly, what the options are to treat it) can empower women to make the choices that are right for them to live their best lives.

First Things First. What Is International Women's Day?

International Women's Day portrait of cheerful multiethnic mixed age range businesswomen celebrating, Embrace Equity

Every year, people across the globe gather in their communities to celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of women. This holiday, known as International Women's Day, is considered a part of the women's rights movement and can be traced back to 1909 when the first National Woman's Day took place.

It's a day to raise awareness about the many issues that women still face today and also a day to celebrate the many achievements of women. On March 8 every year, people across the globe celebrate women and raise money for charities that help women in need.

The theme for International Women's Day this year is Accelerate Action. What's the purpose behind this theme? To encourage people to fight for a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. After all, that's what International Women's Day is all about.

How to Celebrate the Women in Your Life

You can't ever go wrong with simple gestures like buying a woman chocolates or flowers, but there are also many other creative ways to show them you care. If you're looking for the most unique ways to celebrate the women in your life this International Women's Day, try one of these options.

Write Heart-Felt Thank You Notes

What better way to celebrate International Women's Day than to personally thank the women who have inspired you? Many of the strongest women in our lives don't realize how much they've impacted us. For this holiday, take the time to write a handful of thank-you notes to the women who have inspired you the most.

Share All Your Favorite Moments

When you've known someone for a long time, whether they're a friend or a family member, you share a lot of memories. It can be a beautiful bonding experience to think back on some of those beautiful memories and reminisce together. To celebrate some of the women in your life, send a message about one of your favorite memories with them.

Make a Donation to a Favorite Charity

A big part of International Women's Day is raising awareness about gender equality and other issues that women still deal with today. It's the perfect day for a charitable act, so one way to celebrate a woman in your life is to make a donation to a charity in her name.

Throw a Brunch or Dinner Party

Time spent together is just better when there's food involved. Celebrate the wonderful women in your life by inviting them to a brunch or dinner party at your place. It's an opportunity to spend quality time with inspiring women and connect with other women in your community.

Send Their Favorite Flowers

There are few things that can brighten a woman's day more than receiving a bouquet of her favorite flowers. It may seem simple, but sending flowers to the women you love and appreciate can really make them feel loved. This is also a perfect way to celebrate women you can't be with in-person on this holiday.

Frame Your Favorite Picture

With most of us storing our favorite pictures on our phones, it's easy to forget how meaningful a framed photo can be. Find your favorite picture with a friend, sister, or other woman in your life, and frame it so she can always be reminded of how much you appreciate her.

Write a Poem

You don't have to be Shakespeare to write a meaningful poem for someone you love – and it doesn't have to start with “Roses are red” either. A poem can be a meaningful and creative way to express your appreciation for a woman in your life. Start by writing down how you feel and you might even surprise yourself with your creativity.

Host a Women's Movie Night

Watching films about inspiring women is a great way to celebrate International Women's Day – but it's an even better experience if you share it with the women in your life. Find an International Women's Day Film List and host a movie night, featuring female stories or films with female directors to celebrate the work of women in the film industry.

Celebrate Their Accomplishments

One of the main purposes of International Women's Day is the celebrate the accomplishments of women. You can do this on a smaller scale with the women in your life by celebrating some of their personal accomplishments. Send them a message or buy them a card telling them how proud you are of them.

Plan a Spa Day

A spa day is the ultimate way to relax, and International Women's Day is the perfect holiday to treat a woman in your life to this experience. For those long-distance friends, you can send a spa gift card so they can treat themselves. For those who live near you, book a spa day together so you can celebrate while enjoying quality time.

Ship Care Packages

Whether you have a woman in your life who's a busy mom or a hard-working college student, care packages are a great way to show your love. Especially if you don't live close enough to visit in person, send her a box full of her favorite treats and activities.

Run an Errand for Them

Running an errand for someone may not seem like the most luxurious gift – but it can be a simple way to show your appreciation. Let the woman you're celebrating put her feet up and relax while you run to the grocery store, pick up her dry-cleaning, or fill her car up with gas.

Create a Photo Album

You likely have an infinite number of memories you share with the women in your life. Find some of the best photos of you together and print them out to add to a photo album or scrapbook. Then, she can look back on all those memories without having to flip through her phone.

Cupcake packaging, delivery box, vanilla cupcakes with pink and white cream, selective focus, close up

Send Their Favorite Treat

Nowadays, almost anything can be delivered, so there's nothing keeping you from sending treats to the women you love all over the country. From ice cream to brownies, there are businesses out there that will deliver treats directly to the doorstep of the women in your life.

Give Them the Day Off

If you happen to live with the hard-working woman you wish to honor, surprise her by taking some of her daily chores off her plate. If she typically tackles the cooking, make her a meal or take her out to dinner. If she typically gives the little ones their evening baths, tell her to take a load off while you get the kids cleaned up. We promise she'll appreciate the break.

Create a Memory Jar

A memory jar can be a meaningful gift to give to a woman in your life. This gift allows you to celebrate her while also providing a wonderful keepsake she'll cherish for years to come. Fill a jar with notes about some of your favorite memories together or even some of the things you love about her.

Go Shopping Together

Shopping together can be a great bonding experience between you and someone you love spending time with. Invite a friend or even a group of friends out for a girl's shopping trip this International Women's Day.

Create a Custom Puzzle

While framing a photo is a great way to cherish a memory together, a custom puzzle allows you to cherish a memory while doing a fun activity together as well. There are many companies out there that offer custom photo puzzles – so find a favorite picture of you and a woman in your life and set aside some time to complete the puzzle with her.

Watch the Kids

Moms are some of the hardest-working women that we know. If you have a mom in your life who could use a break, offer to watch the kids for her on this holiday. Even if she gets an hour or two to herself, you've given her a priceless gift that she probably doesn't receive very often.

Take the Time to Listen

While there are many fun and light-hearted ways to celebrate International Women's Day, we have to remember it's a day to bring awareness to many of the things women struggle with. Sometimes the best gift you can give is just your presence when someone needs to vent or share something they're dealing with. On this International Women's Day, take the time to be that person for the women in your life.

In addition to your favorite thrill rides, lights-out rides are available on certain roller coasters. What would Halloween be without candy? Throughout the theme park, there are thirteen candy stops on the Trick-or-treat Trail. Ten of the candy stops are at Treatville on the Boardwalk. Trick-or-treating is available any night of the Halloween event until 8 p.m.

Halloween at Legoland: What to Know Before You Go https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-legoland/ https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-legoland/#respond Fri, 04 Oct 2024 16:18:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=93023&preview=true&preview_id=93023 The post Halloween at Legoland: What to Know Before You Go appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Legoland California’s “Brick-or-Treat Monster Party” is one of the most family-friendly Halloween events you’ll find anywhere. Geared toward kids 12 and under, including toddlers, there’s nothing particularly scary about Brick-or-Treat. It just has a lot of Halloween-themed decorations, kid-oriented activities, and rides that all of your little monsters will love! Take a look below to learn more about what to expect.

Brick-or-Treat Monster Party

On Saturdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 27, Legoland California gets dressed up for Halloween during its regular opening hours — no separate ticket is required. Although the spooky decor is in place all day, most of the activities happen in the late afternoon and evening. The advantage of this is that your family can enjoy the park rides, get up close to marine creatures at the Sea Life Aquarium, and, if it’s a particularly warm day, splash down the water slides at the Legoland Water Park. The Dragon Coaster is even turned into the Halloween-themed Disco Dragon Coaster with a groovy monster soundtrack. If you do any of these, pack your Halloween costumes ahead of time and put them on for the trick-or-treating that starts at 3 pm. There are 15 trick-or-treat stations around the park, so your little goblins will have a lot of fun trying to find them all (there’s a park map with candy corn symbols marking their locations if you miss some!). Just be sure to say “brick-or-treat”!

While they trick-or-treat, your kids will come across Lego characters like the Lego Witch and Lego Mummy, others dressed up as not-too-scary witches and warlocks, and fantastical characters on stilts. They can compare costumes and get their pictures taken together. Be sure to leave time for the several fun shows happening around the park, too. There’s the interactive Lord Vampyre’s Very Important Monsters Dance Party, Operation Monster Squad where kids can unleash their inner monster, and a Candy-Coated Curse in which performers sing and dance their way out of a sticky situation. There’s also a new special-effects-filled 4-D ride called the Great Monster Chase where tweens try to sneak into a monster party. The older kids in your group will get a (slight) scare at the Spider Queen’s Lair Scare Zone in Fun Town. It features live actors and some spooky sounds and makes a good introduction to Halloween mazes. If that sounds like too much for your little ones, they can try the Brick-or-Treat Heist scavenger hunt that starts in Fun Town. Just look for the magnifying glass at the Midnight Monster Jam Boo Crew.

Lego witch - Halloween at Legoland
As you peruse Legoland, you'll come across Lego characters like witches and mummies, a fun feature of this festive event.

Keep your costumes on for the costume parades and the contests that follow. There’s a parade/contest every hour starting at 3 pm; the last one starts at 6 pm (you’ll need to register at least 5 minutes beforehand to participate). There are valuable prizes for three categories of costumes: Best Lego Costume, Best Homemade Costume, and Best Group Costume. That last category means the whole family can participate!

If your little ones are starting to turn into zombies, you can bring them back to life with a lot of fun Halloween treats in eateries around the park. Some of them include Chili Mango Monster and pumpkin ice cream, candied apples, purple crispy treats, apple cider, pumpkin crepes, shakes, and lattes. That should give them the energy to join in the Boo Crew Boogie that goes from 7:30 to 8 pm just before the park closes.

Times & Tickets

Brick-or-Treat happens at Legoland California only on Saturdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 27. The park is open from 10 am to 6 pm in September and 10 am to 8 pm in October, so you’ll get more bang for your buck with an October visit. See the park calendar for full details.

Legoland California has a variety of ticket packages depending on how much you want to do in a day; all include the Brick-or-Treat festivities.

Halloween at Knott’s Berry Farm https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-knotts-berry-farm/ https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-knotts-berry-farm/#respond Thu, 03 Oct 2024 09:48:01 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=93024&preview=true&preview_id=93024 The post Halloween at Knott’s Berry Farm appeared first on Moms Who Think.

In the weeks before Halloween, Knott’s Berry Farm transforms at night into “Knott’s Scary Farm,” the largest and scariest Halloween event in southern California. It launched the Halloween theme park craze in 1973, and many say it is still the best. It’s so scary that it’s not recommended for kids under 13. Fortunately, there is a less scary version for the under-13 set that happens before sundown, and it’s called “Knott’s Spooky Farm.” Let’s take a look at both to see what to expect from Halloween at Knott's Berry Farm.

Knott's Scary Farm at Knott's Berry Farm
From late September through late October, Knott's Berry Farm transforms into the hauntingly festive Knott's SCARY Farm!

Knott’s Spooky Farm

During the day starting Sept. 26, Knott’s Berry Farm gets dressed up for Halloween with kid-friendly decor and activities. Children can dress up in their own costumes and get their pictures taken with Peanuts characters that are in Halloween costumes as well. Little monsters will encounter spooky skeletons, giant spiderwebs, and friendly scarecrows as they collect candy at the trick-or-treat stations in Ghost Town (a regular section of the park) and on Schoolhouse Road. Kids 12 and under receive their orange treat bag upon entering the park, too.

Little kids will have a blast with all the Halloween-themed shows happening throughout the park, many involving their favorite Peanuts characters. They’ll be clapping along with Snoopy, Lucy, and Linus at their musical act, the Great Pumpkin Palooza. There’s also a colorful dance show celebrating the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), and kids can decorate their own cookies at the Ghost Town Pumpkin Patch. Braver kids will get creeped out by the spiders, bugs, snakes, and albino scorpions at the Creepy Critters of Calico. Everyone can take a Halloween-themed train ride to Camp Snoopy–er, Spooky–or ride through tunnels of candy on the Calico Candy Mine ride.

When the candy wears off, your little goblins will squeal over the special Halloween treats waiting for them throughout the park. Mummy dogs, candy corn parfait, Bobbing for Apple macarons, and Witch’s Finger matcha shakes will only add to their thrills. Knott’s Spooky Farm wraps up at 5 pm in order for the park to prepare for Knott’s Scary Farm.

Knott’s Scary Farm

The scariest Halloween event in southern California starts when the sun goes down. Knott's Scary Farm kicks off at 7 p.m. and requires a separate ticket. Entry lines can be scary long, so to beat the crowd, come early for the Boo-fet dinner that serves Knott’s classics like fried chicken, a chef carving station, and boysenberry pie. This will also give your ghouls early entry to the park and a chance to get photos with some of the costumed creatures that come out as darkness descends. (Photos with them are not allowed after 7 p.m.).

As the 7 o’clock hour arrives, a creepy fog begins to envelop the park, and 1,000-plus monsters are unleashed all at once. You’ll get chills as blood-curdling screams can be heard in the distance. You’ll quickly lose your bearings in the thickening fog that zombies, witches, fiendish clowns, and ax murderers use as cover to leap out at you and scare you half to death. You will soon stumble into the eight mazes that are spread throughout five scare zones covering all of Knott’s. One maze is Mesmer: Sideshow of the Mind, where an evil hypnotist turns unsuspecting guests into brain-eating zombies. In Wax Works, you’ll be horrified to watch victims get submerged into boiling hot wax and turned into the latest disfigured creation of Dr. Augustus Scratch. In Dark Entities, you’ll run for your life in total darkness as alien creatures search for their next human meal. The frights in these mazes will leave your heart pounding!

For another kind of adrenaline rush, head to the Timber Mountain Log Ride, which turns into the Halloween Hootenanny. It’s completely immersed in darkness with lit-up creepy creatures around every turn. Other thrill rides are open, too, and are even more thrilling in the dark. When you’re ready to sit down for some comic relief, each of the scare zones has a show; they range from zany to bizarre. Brian Henson’s Puppet Up! – Uncensored show will get everybody laughing while Invitation to Terror features 1980s-era digital illusions and special effects. The Carnaval du Grotesque cover band will get your toes tapping to some Halloween-themed rock music.

The scares will follow you to the food vendors as well. Try the Midnight Murderous funnel cake topped with bloody berries and gummy body parts. The Freaky Frog Legs on a stick are not for the squeamish, either. Knott’s Scary Farm certainly earns its moniker “Where Nightmares Never End!”

Times & Tickets

Knott’s Scary Farm generally runs Wednesday through Sunday nights from late September to late October. It’s also open on a handful of additional nights and, of course, Halloween night. It’s open 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. and 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the other nights. See the park’s calendar for complete details.

See the park’s ticket webpage for details and purchasing.

Universal Studios Florida’s Spooky Halloween Plans https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-universal-studios-florida/ https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-universal-studios-florida/#respond Thu, 03 Oct 2024 05:36:08 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=93022&preview=true&preview_id=93022 The post Universal Studios Florida’s Spooky Halloween Plans appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Universal Studios Florida in Orlando outdoes almost any other Halloween event with its Halloween Horror Nights from Aug. 30 to Nov. 3. Since 2006, it has been named Best Halloween Event 12 times by Amusement Today — more than any other theme park! And Halloween Horror Nights in 2024 promises to be just as scary, if not more so, than years past. Everyone raves about the quality of the sets and costumes and the scariness of the actors, which is not surprising considering that a top movie studio is putting on the show! Let’s take a look at what to expect this year.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida
Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida is an award-winning fright fest!

Halloween Horror Nights

During the day, Universal Studios Florida is full of fun rides, attractions, and characters from the Universal Studios canon, like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the Transformers, Jurassic World, Shrek, Despicable Me (you’ve got to love those Minions!), and SpongeBob SquarePants. There’s really something for the whole family, including play areas for little kids.

As twilight descends in September and October, the atmosphere changes — literally. A misty fog starts to roll down the streets, and creepy rock music interrupted by the sound of chainsaws comes over the loudspeakers. If you have little ones in your group, now is the time to evacuate before the demented Jack the Clown is unleashed into the crowds. Universal Studios doesn’t recommend Halloween Horror Nights for anyone under 13 and strongly cautions against bringing young children. Still, you’ll have to be the judge of just how much horror your kids can take. And the park doesn’t allow guests to wear costumes or costume masks. You have to leave the horror up to them.

The theme park has five scare zones, 10 haunted houses, and a live show during this separately ticketed event.

  • A Quiet Place. If you want to survive the terrifying, post-apocalyptic world, you better keep quiet, like the Abbott family.
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Try not to freeze in fear as the bone-chilling new specter, Garraka throws spears of ice and freezes people in front of you.
  • Insidious: The Further. Try not to get trapped in The Further as demons try to ensnare you.
  • Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines. The epic battle of Saskia Van Helsing and the Bride of Frankenstein against Dracula’s daughter and her monstrous mavens.
  • Monstruos 2: The Nightmares of Latin America.  Battle against the infernal rider El Charro, the devil dog El Cadejo, or the boogeyman El Cucuy.
  • Slaughter Sinema 2: Get Ready for the Final Cut. This is a horror movie marathon the like of which you have never seen before.
  • The Museum: Deadly Exhibits. The Rotting Stone, a folklore museum’s newest exhibit, releases an evil spirit that destroys everything.

Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles has one of the scariest Halloween events in southern California, and that’s saying a lot considering how many there are. This year, the world-famous movie studio is hosting Halloween Horror Nights from Sept. 5 to Nov. 3. Because Universal Studios is a master of producing horror movies, the quality of the sets and costumes at their Halloween event is top-notch. They even hold auditions to select their “scareactors” to ensure guests are truly scared. Let’s take a look at what victims–er, guests are in store for this year.

Halloween Horror Nights

As twilight descends in September and October, the atmosphere at Universal Studios Hollywood begins to change — literally. A dense fog lit up by flickering orange lights starts to roll down the streets, and the sound of revving chainsaws and screams comes over the loudspeakers. Just before 7 pm, the “Opening Scaremony” starts when deranged monsters and mummies are unleashed into the crowds, and everyone starts to scramble. Because of the high scare factor, Universal Studios doesn’t recommend Halloween Horror Nights for anyone under 13 and strongly cautions against bringing young children, but you’ll have to be the judge of how much horror your kids can take. And the park doesn’t allow guests to wear costumes or costume masks. You have to leave the horror up to them.

Universal Studios Hollywood plans to have several scare zones, eight haunted houses, and a live show during this separately ticketed event. The scare zones and haunted houses change every year, so if you’ve visited in years past, you’ll have a different experience in 2024. As of this writing, Universal has announced eight haunted houses and the terror tram. Let’s take a look at what’s been announced:

  • The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy. This all-new creation is inspired by the enormously popular After Hours album by the pop group The Weeknd. In this macabre haunted house, slashers go on the rampage, carving smiles into unsuspecting faces and performing extreme plastic surgery on the unwary. This could truly give you nightmares!
  • Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse. This house of horrors resurrects a popular Halloween maze from Universal Studios Hollywood. It’s a double feature of terror based on the body-swapping movie Freaky and the horror film The Black Phone about a kidnapped boy who’s able to communicate with the victims of serial killers. This is not your garden-variety haunted house!
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy of Leatherface. In honor of the 1974 movie’s 50th anniversary, a new gruesome original story is told.
  • Dead Exposure: Death Valley. People are turned into radioactive zombies, in this experiment gone wrong.

If you're already a fan of Holiday World or you've always wanted to visit, the Halloween weekends are a great time to have fun in the park. During this time, you'll get to enjoy all of the rides and attractions you normally love at Holiday World. But in addition to this, there are also Halloween events and shows going on that will be fun for the whole family. Here are some of the best parts you won’t want to miss.

Festive Halloween Food

Holiday World already has some pretty festive and exciting food year-round. From their fudge to their blue ice cream to their full Thanksgiving dinner, there is no shortage of exciting dining opportunities. But there are even more exciting and festive options during the Happy Halloween weekends. Food and desserts like Pumpkin Funnel Cakes and Caramel Apples can be expected throughout the park.

SCAREbnb

SCAREbnb is a family-friendly Halloween fun house that kids love! It's spooky enough to give your family a thrill, but it's not so scary that your little ones can't participate. As you enter the home, you'll enjoy meeting fun and slightly spooky characters like Dracula and Frankenstein. It's one experience you won't soon forget!

Holidog's 3D Adventure

Head to the Holiday Theater for a Halloween show. After popping on your 3D glasses, you can participate in this fun house where Holidog needs help finding his Halloween candy.

Corn Mazes and Hayrides

Nothing says fall quite like corn mazes and hayrides. At Holiday World, this is no exception. With over 12 acres of corn mazes, this attraction will have your family twisting and turning as you trek through the maze, trying to find your way out. The corn maze is included in the price of admission and is always a family favorite each year.

“The Monster Mash”

“The Monster Mash” is a show your family will enjoy. With monsters dressed up and lots of fun music, this show will get your family excited and ready for Halloween. And you'll likely recognize some of the popular songs performed during “The Monster Mash.”

Carnival Chaos

Carnival Chaos is an abandoned carnival that you and your family can explore if you're ready for some thrills. This event is for adults and older children since it does include some scarier moments and strobe lights.

Trick-or-Treating

No Halloween event would be complete without trick-or-treating. Children 12 and under are welcome to trick-or-treat in the park during the Halloween event. Halloween costumes are welcome in the park! But there are a few rules. Since Holiday World is family-friendly, costumes need to be free of blood, guts, and gore. Costumes that cover the entire face are also prohibited.

The best part of Holiday World is you can celebrate your favorite holidays year-round. But there’s something special about coming during some of the most festive times of the year. If you’re looking for a family-friendly Halloween event, check out the Happy Halloween Weekends.

Halloween at Kings Island: What to Expect https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-kings-island/ https://www.momswhothink.com/halloween-at-kings-island/#respond Wed, 02 Oct 2024 03:36:19 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=93017&preview=true&preview_id=93017 The post Halloween at Kings Island: What to Expect appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Kings Island is a beloved family destination just 24 miles outside of Cincinnati. Located in Mason, Ohio, this 364-acre amusement park has more than 100 attractions for families, as well as a water park. There are plenty of special events throughout the year, including live entertainment. But Halloween at Kings Island is one of the best times to visit!

Whether you’re looking for some Halloween thrills for older kids or trick-or-treating for younger kids, Kings Island has something for your whole family at this festive time of year.

Halloween at Kings Island: Events

During the fall season, two major events are happening at Kings Island. The first is Halloween Haunt, a frightening event for mature audiences that takes place at night in the park. The other major event going on in September and October is the Tricks and Treats Fall Fest, which involves food, games, and fun without the gore.

Halloween Haunt

If you have older kids or you want a night out for the parents, then Halloween Haunt may be for you. This spooky event, which takes place on select days from September to 2 November, is meant for audiences of at least 13 years old, so leave the little ones at home. The Halloween Haunt was voted the “Best Theme Park Halloween Event” by USA Today in 2021, and with good reason. At this event, you’ll find a variety of thrills from scare zones to haunted mazes. After dark, there are creatures hiding around every corner as you wander through the park. If you love a good scare, you'll enjoy this annual event.

Tricks and Treats Fall Fest

The Tricks and Treats Fall Fest takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from September to 3 November. This is truly a fun and festive event for the whole family. Whether you have little ones or older kids, there’s something for each age group to enjoy. Here are a few of the things you won’t want to miss at the Fall Fest:

  • Festive food — There are plenty of festive snacks available at different stations during the festivities. If you purchase a Tasting Card, you can try the treats at each snack station as you’re making your way through the park.
  • Specialty drinks — For the grown-ups, there are craft beers, ciders, and specialty drinks offered throughout the park. And for those who are looking for a non-alcoholic beverage, the special “potions” can be made without alcohol as well.
  • Fall-themed activities — The annual Halloween event has all of the attractions you love at a typical fall festival but with the uniqueness of Kings Island. Tractor rides, game shows, crafts, and scavenger hunts will keep your family busy.
  • Halloween costumes — Guests who are 12 and younger are encouraged to wear their Halloween garb and participate in the annual costume contest. And if your kids don't have a Halloween costume, the Costume Council will help them get dressed up to participate in the contest.
  • Trick-or-treating — No Halloween event is complete without trick-or-treating! Kings Island has various stops throughout the park where your kids can snag some candy.

If you're visiting Kings Island during Halloween, you'll find fun for the whole family. Between Tricks and Treats Fall Fest during the day and Halloween Haunt at night, there's something for everyone during the fall season.

Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom: Your New Halloween Tradition! https://www.momswhothink.com/pumpkins-at-kentucky-kingdom/ https://www.momswhothink.com/pumpkins-at-kentucky-kingdom/#respond Wed, 02 Oct 2024 02:58:55 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=93016&preview=true&preview_id=93016 The post Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom: Your New Halloween Tradition! appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Kentucky Kingdom is a theme park with attractions for kids of all ages. From bumper cars to river rapids, there’s a variety of rides your family will enjoy. But one of the best experiences at this amusement park is during the fall — particularly around Halloween, and this year, Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom makes its debut.

This event is specifically designed for families and doesn’t include some of the scarier events that other Halloween-themed events often have. If you’re looking for fun that’s appropriate for little ones, here are the events you won’t want to miss.

When is Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom?

This Halloween event takes place during weekends in October, during the day and night. To attend, you need a Season Pass to Kentucky Kingdom. Season Passes can be a great purchase for your family if you attend throughout the summer and fall. They give your family access to special events throughout the season and an early look at the Halloween event before it officially opens.

Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom
Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom is a fun seasonal event families love!

What is Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom?

Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom is an all-new family-centered event, the ultimate Halloween destination for Louisville residents and visitors. Going on during the day and night, this festive event and light spectacular is going to be worth visiting.

So what is so exciting about the Halloween event at Kentucky Kingdom? Here’s what you don’t want to miss:

  • Huge pumpkin sculptures — One of the parts of this Halloween event your kids will love are the giant pumpkin sculptures. Some of them reach over 12 feet in height, and your kids will love the way they glow.
  • Thousands of pumpkins — At Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom, you’ll find over 1,000 illuminated pumpkins throughout the park. This makes the event more festive for young kids, without the spookiness present at other Halloween festivals.
  • Pumpkin dance party — Your kids can show off their dance moves at a pumpkin dance party. With festive music and a seasonal show, your kids will enjoy dancing the night away in their costumes.
  • Seasonal food and treats — In addition to their typical offerings, there will be festive food and treats throughout the park during this event.
  • Trick-or-treating for the kids — Halloween just isn’t complete without trick-or-treating for the kids. Each day, there’s a trick-or-treat trail for the kids to follow where they can show off their costumes and stock up on some candy.

Make Memories

Throughout the park, there are plenty of photo opportunities for you and your family to take keepsake photos to capture the memories made. And the photo opportunities are pumpkin-themed, of course. But more than just snapping photos, Kentucky Kingdom is big on helping your family create “memories worth repeating.” From the memorable rides to the costume fun, you and your family will have a time you won’t forget. The park will be filled with festive decor, including glowing pumpkins and trees, and buildings lit with festive lights. Don’t miss this opportunity to make memories with your family at Kentucky Kingdom.

Fall Break at Epcot: Your Easy Planning Guide https://www.momswhothink.com/fall-break-at-epcot/ https://www.momswhothink.com/fall-break-at-epcot/#respond Thu, 11 Aug 2022 18:28:32 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=92616&preview=true&preview_id=92616 The post Fall Break at Epcot: Your Easy Planning Guide appeared first on Moms Who Think.

When fall break rolls around and you need a classic place to take your family and have a good time, consider Epcot. This popular theme park is a part of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The park provides guests with a one-of-a-kind theme park experience by providing a wide selection of rides, attractions, and unrivaled forms of entertainment and events. Fall break at Epcot is the perfect time to visit since it's the season for the annual International Food & Wine Festival. Below is everything you need to plan for an epic experience at Epcot this fall.

Epcot
Epcot beckons via its massive sphere! Here's how to spend fall break at this most magical destination!

EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival

Running from mid-July to late November, the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival allows your family to take a taste tour around the world at tempting marketplaces showcasing authentic cuisine and beverages from around the world.

Sample food, wine, and more from six continents as you make your way around the park. From Brazilian feijoada to Tasmanian wine, French crème brûlée to Kenyan coffee-barbecued beef, there's an astonishing variety of new and familiar flavors to try.

There is no separate ticket for this event — all you need is admission to EPCOT.

What to do

There's a lot more to this festival than just eating. From epic scavenger hunts to live music, there is plenty to keep you and your family busy throughout the day.

Emile's Fromage Montage

This event is for the cheese-lovers in your family. Your Festival Passport will be your guide as you stroll around the park sampling cheese dishes from around the globe. Try five different cheesy selections to collect stamps in your Festival Passport. Once you have your five stamps, you'll be able to redeem them for a special dessert at the Shimmering Sips marketplace.

Remy's Ratatouille Hide & Squeak

The World Showcase is the setting for this Ratatouille-themed treasure hunt. Families, kids, and yes, even adults, will love it! Simply purchase the scavenger hunt map and stickers. When you locate Remy there, place the correct sticker on the nation. When you've finished your map and found every Remy, deliver it to the designated spot to receive a prize!

Pluto's Pumpkin Pursuit

Get in the Halloween spirit by taking part in this special pumpkin hunt from mid-September through Halloween.

To play, purchase your game board and stickers at specific retail locations. Enjoy finding hidden decorative pumpkins with Disney themes while adding the relevant stickers to your game board once you find one of Pluto's pumpkins. You can receive a prize by bringing your game board to a redemption location regardless of whether you go pumpkin hunting or not.

Live Performances of “Eat to the Beat”

Add a live band to your day of fantastic dining at the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival! Attend a Florida Blue Medicare-sponsored concert called “Eat to the Beat.” America Gardens Theater hosts concerts at 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 8 p.m. every day.

What to eat?

So, it turns out that you can eat wherever. This festival is primarily about food and wine, after all. To focus things a little more, the park has many “world marketplaces” set up so you may try various cuisines. If you intend to attend one of the “Eat to the Beat” performances, there are dining packages available that include concert entry and reservations at a park restaurant.

What to buy

In addition to the typical Disney souvenirs available in shops all over the park, you can buy some special festival-themed souvenirs, like clothing and accessories. And since this is a food festival, they also offer Disney-themed kitchenware featuring Mickey, Minnie, and Princess Tiana.

Minnie Mouse mug
Grab a Disney souvenir to commemorate your fall break at Epcot!

Other Attractions

Of course, there's a lot more to Epcot than the International Food & Wine Festival. Here are some other attractions you and your family might want to try:

Harmonious Fireworks Show

More than just a fireworks show, this nightly Disney spectacular combines music and dance, lights and lasers, fountains and screens into an exciting celebration of Disney stories.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

This brand-new reverse-launch coaster takes you on a wild mission with Rocket, Groot, Gomora, and Star-Lord. The fully indoor coaster rotates 360 degrees as special effects send you hurtling through space. Note that guests must enter a virtual queue using the My Disney Experience app to ride. All riders must be 42 inches or taller.

Frozen Ever After

If you or your kids love Frozen, you'll love this ride. Featuring beloved characters and music from the films, this journey through the world of Frozen is located in World Showcase. It's a slow boat ride with occasional gentle thrills as you plunge over cascades, with the possibility of getting splashed with a little water. There are no height restrictions for this ride, so it's perfect for families with small children.

Soarin' Around the World

This exciting journey features a massive IMAX screen to give you the feeling of flight as you travel to famous sites around the globe. It is located in World Nature, and guests must be at least 40 inches tall to ride.

Tickets

Standard tickets start from $109 and allow you access to Epcot. If you plan to visit another of Disney World's parks, you can upgrade to a Park Hopper ticket. If you plan to stay at a Disney resort, look for ticket-and-hotel packages. These can save you a substantial amount on tickets and lodging.

Buying tickets in advance is very important as your reservations will save you time waiting in line and may be cheaper than buying tickets at Epcot.

Places to Stay in Epcot

One of the most important decisions you'll have to make when planning a vacation to Walt Disney World is whether to stay locally at one of the famous Disney resorts or off-site at any of the myriad cheaper but more traditional hotels.

For many visitors, staying at one of the 24 Disney-owned and -operated resorts is an integral part of the Walt Disney World experience. Every Disney resort is heavily themed, impeccably maintained, and a vacation experience in its own right.

While none of the alternatives can be described as cheap, most are luxurious yet reasonably priced. Note that discounts may be available for many resorts – check the Disney World special offers page for details.

How to Get to Epcot

You will be about a 30-minute drive from the main park if you fly into Orlando International Airport. Reservations must be made in advance for airport shuttles like Mears Connect and The Sunshine Flyer. Taxis, rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, and automobile rentals are additional choices that can be arranged at the airport. The Minnie Van is one of the most imaginative and cozy journeys if you decide to use the Lyft app.

For those staying in a Disney World resort, you may be able to take a bus, boat, or monorail to Epcot. Some hotels also allow you to get there via the Disney Skyliner, a new gondola system.

Conclusion

With so many things to do, (and did we mention the food?), Epcot is a great family destination in the fall. Children, teenagers, and adults will all enjoy the many attractions this park has to offer.

The Harvest Festival spectacle set against the grandeur of the Smoky Mountains should not be missed. Plus, there's an array of other fun family events on offer during fall:

Harvest Festival

The Harvest Festival is a famous event popular with families from all over the country. It is an occasion where your family can take in the majesty of the mountains as the scenery comes to life with vivid colors and the fragrances of apple and pumpkin delights wafting through the streets. Shimmering pumpkin emblems will envelop your kids in a warm glow and make them feel like they're in a fairytale.

Great Pumpkin Luminights

When the sun goes down over the Smoky Mountains, the park is transformed into a display of autumn magnificence as larger-than-life pumpkin icons, and thousands of carved pumpkins light up the night. Your children will love strolling through a field of glistening sunflowers or observing a colony of illuminating frogs. And you can get a great family holiday snapshot in front of the towering pumpkin tree. The Great Pumpkin LumiNights is Dollywood's most anticipated event of the Harvest season. It is fun for guests of all ages.

Dreamland Drive-In

The Dreamland Drive-In event is held in Pines Theater. Parents will love the enthralling musical journey, which revives many classic tunes through the fantastic performances of a talented cast. Twelve fantastic performers, four live musicians, and skilled production staff bring the hits of the 1950s and 1960s to life.

Wings of America Birds of Prey

As these incredible birds of prey are displayed, your family will get the opportunity to look closely at them, learn some fascinating facts, and even witness some of them take flight. The American Eagle Foundation is responsible for caring for all of the birds of prey on display at Dollywood. Plan a fall visit to the Craftsman's Valley to see this delightful show.

Wild Roots Band

This ensemble pulls from the diverse musical history of the Smoky Mountains, allowing your family to immerse themselves in the traditional music of the region. Wild Roots will perform songs about faith, love, and celebration that have been passed down the generations. The event is located in the Show street Gazebo.

Smoky Mountain String Band

The Market Square Stage is the place to be to experience bluegrass music at its finest. You will be delighted by these amazing musicians. They entertain crowds with some of the most popular hits in bluegrass music.

Getting There

Dollywood is located at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Therefore, driving is the most economical way to travel if you are in Nashville.

If you prefer to fly, Allegiant Air, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and American Airlines are the airlines that provide service between Nashville International Airport and Knoxville International Airport. The shortest flight has one stoppage and takes 2 hours, 58 minutes.

Where to Stay

When traveling to Dollywood, you don't need to worry about where your family will find accommodation. Plenty of hotels are available, starting at around $100 per night.

Here are our favorites:

Dollywood's DreamMore Resort & Spa

To get the full Dollywood experience, plan to stay at Dollywood's DreamMore Resort. Pools, a fitness center, game rooms, storytime and so much more make this option a no-brainer. Not to mention, everything with Dolly's touch is gold! Plus it's near Dollywood and there are packages galore, making for great savings.

All Season Suites

All Season Suites is another option in the hub of Pigeon Forge. It is noted for its tranquil atmosphere and proximity to restaurants and entertainment. The All Season Suites is a non-smoking hotel popular with families. Its family-friendly facilities include a game room to keep your kids entertained. Plus, there is an option of a complimentary ‘grab-and-go' breakfast so you can head off to Dollywood without delay. All Season Suites amenities include flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes, air conditioning, onsite laundry, and free WiFi.

Where to Eat

When dining at one of the eateries in the park offering table service, you don't need to make reservations in advance. Instead, you can visit the Front Porch Café or Aunt Granny's Restaurant early in the day to place your name on a list to dine there later. But be warned, there is limited capacity.

Besides the many park eateries, there are many restaurant options outside Dollywood. These range from high-quality seafood establishments to delicious comfort food specialties.

These are three of the best dining options to put on your list:

Chesapeake's Restaurant

Chesapeake serves mouth-watering seafood of excellent quality. Freshness is guaranteed with seafood flown in every day. Choose a spot on the heated patio to suitably savor your seafood feast. Pick out a live Maine lobster, crab cakes, and other ocean delights. Of course, if you'd rather eat land-based food than seafood, you can try a filet mignon or a prime-grade New York strip steak.

The Old Mill Restaurant

Visit a Pigeon Forge institution by getting along to the Old Mill. It serves delicious Southern-style comfort food perfect for warming up in the cool fall temperatures. Additionally, your kids can enjoy the spectacle of the 200-year-old mill and water wheel while enjoying their meals. At Old Mill, you can order a hot breakfast right off the grill, a tasty lunch or dinner with corn chowder and fritters, or a snack between meals. Kids are well catered for with their set menu options, including drinks and dessert.

Special Discounts

To be well prepared, you can buy your tickets online. Alternatively, purchase directly at the park after checking the discount rates available. Here are some extra tips about choosing your tickets to Dollywood:

  • Children under the age of 3 do not need a ticket to enter Dollywood or Dollywood's Splash Country
  • Tickets for adults are available to anyone aged 10 to 61.

Don't want to miss out? We've compiled an itinerary to set you on the way to all the fun and excitement of the season. Here is how to spend fall break at Disneyland.

Fall break at Disneyland is nothing short of MAGIC!

Special Seasonal Events

You might want to plan your trip around special Disneyland events this fall. Even though the parks are reason enough to go to Disneyland anytime, there are also a lot of fun experiences that happen only once a year.

Halloween at the Disneyland Resort

From the beginning to the end of October, the streets of Disneyland Park transform with an amazing Halloween bent. Incredible decorations, themed shows and plenty of other treats are set up for your entertainment.

You get to enjoy some of the park's most popular rides, like the Haunted Mansion Holiday, run by Jack Skellington, a character in the 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas.

In addition, the Halloween Screams event has been transformed into a projection and special effects extravaganza that illuminate Disneyland Park most nights during the Halloween season.

Plaza de la Familia

At Disney California Adventure, Plaza de la Familia honors the Disney-Pixar movie Coco. This party takes place at Paradise Gardens and features Mariachi music. You'll also enjoy delicious Mexican food, a Tree of Life interactive picture display, and free coloring and crafts.

The finest segment is “A Musical Celebration of Coco,” a presentation that includes dancing, storytelling, and the original movie's music score. There is also an outstanding puppet display, including Halloween-style dancing skeletons.

Dapper Day Fall Outing

Dapper Day celebrates sophisticated historical and contemporary fashion styles. It encourages participants to step out in their best fashionista style, with the most popular theme being 1950s styles. Disney's Dapper Day is set for November 6 this fall.

Mickey's and Minnie's Birthday

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse celebrate their birthdays on the same day. So even though this isn't a scheduled event, if you happen to be at Disneyland on November 20, you might be surprised by sharing some birthday treats with these special characters.

Getting There

Following your flight, hop on one of the many handy modes of public transport available to get you to Disneyland. These include bus, rail, shuttle, and taxi.

From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

It's approximately 40 miles from LAX to your destination at the happiest place on earth.

Here is a quick guide if you decide to take the metro:

  1. After leaving baggage claim, wait on Lower/Arrival Level islands under the LAX Shuttle & Airline Connections sign
  2. Take the “G” bus or shuttle to Aviation Station, then go to the west end of the platform
  3. Board the Green Line Metro train heading for Norwalk
  4. At Norwalk Station, take Metro Express Line 460 to Disneyland

From San Diego International Airport (SAN)

If you arrive at San Diego airport, you can take a train, shuttle, taxi, or limo about 96 miles up the coast to the Disneyland Resort.

You can also opt to use the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), Amtrak, and Metrolink, which connects people from the airport to Santa Fe Depot. Then, you can use options like the Lyft app to get to the Disneyland Resort.

Where To Stay

Disneyland and surrounding areas provide many accommodation options for families. Using the Disney Tourist Blog, you can choose among the parks' three hotels or look for other recommended hotels.

If you want to savor every moment of Disneyland, you may want to opt for one of the hotels onsite. Then you can all be immersed in the wonders on your doorstep for the duration of your stay.

And onsite guests get premium benefits from August 8, 2022, allowing exclusive early access to the park to enjoy all the wonders without the crowds.

Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

This hotel is an excellent choice for enjoying thrill-filled days at the park. The Grand Californian Hotel & Spa's location and impressive amenities like the Tenaya Stone Spa and themed pools make it a favorite for many moms needing a well-earned indulgence.

By staying at this unique hotel, you get an unrivalled experience of Disney charm in the form of lavishly detailed rooms with intricate artworks and the company of Disney princesses at breakfast.

Disneyland Hotel

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park are an easy walk from this hotel. Another drawcard at the Disneyland Hotel is its whimsical tribute to the classic years of Disneyland Park.

In addition, the decadent décor, cutting-edge conveniences, and one-of-a-kind Disney furnishings ensure that your entire family will cherish their time spent here.

Your kids will have a blast riding down one of this attraction's two towering monorail waterslides. These are modelled after a classic amusement park feature and include a delightful water play area.

To top off the benefits of the Disneyland Hotel, you will have easy access to the Downtown Disney District, featuring an array of food options, shopping and entertainment.

Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel

At Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel, you and your loved ones can relive the glory days of seaside boardwalks in California.

This hotel combines old-fashioned charm with contemporary comforts and is an excellent base for shopping and dining options.

Enjoy the Disneyland Resort benefits, including diverse evening entertainment and children's activities like the rooftop pool and waterslide.

Rooms here are relatively spacious to accommodate families of practically any size. In addition, some rooms offer lovely views of Disney California Adventure Park.

Where To Eat

People who have never been to Disneyland before might believe that the theme park is all about the famous attractions and Mickey Mouse. However, previous visitors know its cuisine is just as captivating.

Blue Bayou Restaurant

The eatery is located in New Orleans Square, Disneyland Park.

Blue Bayou has been a Disneyland favorite since it first opened in 1967. You will have a wonderful time watching the Pirates of the Caribbean ride nearby and taking in the sights of the bayou.

The Louisiana-style restaurant serves southern dishes like jambalaya, cauliflower steak and grits. It also offers a good beverage selection- be sure to indulge in their signature hurricane cocktail!

Oga's Cantina

This eatery is in the Disney California Adventure Park section known as Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. However, you will love Oga's Cantina even if you are not Star Wars fans.

Inspired by the concept of faraway galaxies, Oga's Catina serves a wide range of delectable cocktails with amusing twists like tingly foam. It also serves delicious mocktails, wine, beer, and tasty nibbles.

Special Discounts

As a mom, staying on a budget when you go to the park is a great bonus. When you sign up for a Disney®Premier Visa®Card, you can get a $300 statement credit after spending at least a thousand dollars on purchases in the first three months.

People serving in the U.S. military or previously served can get discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort's theme parks. In addition, you can get a Disney Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket:

  • 3-Day Promotional Military Park Hopper Ticket: $225
  • 3-Day Promotional Park Hopper Ticket for Military Personnel with Disney Genie+ Service: $285

Fall Break at Disney World: A Planning Guide  https://www.momswhothink.com/fall-break-at-disney-world/ https://www.momswhothink.com/fall-break-at-disney-world/#respond Mon, 08 Aug 2022 20:41:47 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=92617&preview=true&preview_id=92617 The post Fall Break at Disney World: A Planning Guide  appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Going to Walt Disney World is definitely one of life's greatest experiences. It's just so magical! If you're a fan of autumn, then you should absolutely spend fall break at Disney World. There are two massive special events during the autumn: the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival, and Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in Magic Kingdom. Both events offer boundless fun and magical entertainment for you and your family. Here's everything you need to know for a family-friendly fall break, Disney-style!

Disney World front entrance
Make your fall break dreams come true at Walt Disney World.

EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival

If you like food (and that would be everybody, right?), you won't want to miss this event. Running through November 19, the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival features food and drink from around the globe. Want some Greek spanakopita and lamb gyros? Got it. German bratwurst and beer? Coming right up. Indian chicken tikka masala? Irish seafood pie? You can find all this and more. Plus, there is no separate ticket for this event – all you need is admission to EPCOT.

There's a lot more to this festival than just eating. From epic scavenger hunts to live music, there is plenty to keep you and your family busy throughout the day.

Remy's Ratatouille Hide & Squeak

This Ratatouille-themed scavenger hunt takes place around the World Showcase. It's ideal for families, children, and, yes, grownups! All you need to do is buy the scavenger map and stickers. Place the relevant sticker on the country when you find Remy there. Then, once you've located each Remy and finished your map, deliver it to the specified location to win a reward!

Pluto's Pumpkin Pursuit

From September 9 to October 31, get into the Halloween mood by participating in this unique pumpkin hunt. How to play? You can get your game board and stickers at specific merchandise locations. Have fun looking for hidden Disney-themed decorative pumpkins, placing the corresponding stickers on your game board once you've found one of Pluto's pumpkins. Whether you hunt for pumpkins or not, you can get a prize by taking your game board to a redemption location.

“Eat to the Beat” live concerts

During the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, add a live band to your day of excellent dining! Attend an “Eat to the Beat” concert presented by Florida Blue Medicare. Concerts take place at America Gardens Theatre three times a day: 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 8:00 p.m.

Where to Eat

Okay, so you can really eat everywhere. This is a food and wine festival, after all. But to narrow things down a bit, the park is set up with a number of “global marketplaces” so you can sample different kinds of food:

  • The Alps
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • China
  • France
  • Hawaii
  • India
  • Japan
  • Kenya
  • Mexico
  • And a lot, lot more!

If you plan to attend one of the “Eat to the Beat” concerts, there are dining packages available that get you reservations at one of the park's restaurants along with concert admission.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Bring your kids to this family-friendly event for a Halloween celebration they will never forget. Located in Magic Kingdom, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on select nights from August 12 to October 31. A separate ticket is required for admission.

There are loads of special activities, attractions, and entertaining shows at this massive event.

What to Do

Trick-or-treat

Your kids are welcome to come in a family-friendly Halloween costume for some trick-or-treating with their favorite Disney characters. Don't worry – adults can wear a costume too!

Each child receives a special souvenir bag to fill up with candy.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida
Halloween is a great time for visiting Disney World.

It's not just the Disney characters and kids who are in costume at this special Halloween event – many of your favorite Disney World rides are too! Check out popular rides like Mad Tea Party and Space Mountain to see their Halloween transformation. And, of course, the Haunted Mansion is also a spooky favorite.

Disney Junior Jam

Rides

At Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, the brand-new Storybook Circus Disney Junior Jam is spectacular! dsIf you want to dance the night away with your favorite Disney Junior characters, this is the place to be!

This year's celebration is located in Fantasyland's Storybook Circus area. It is geared towards younger children, who can dance the night away with Vampirina, Doc McStuffins, and other beloved Disney Junior characters.

Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular

The Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular, a live production, is presented on the stage of Cinderella Castle. With Thackery Binx's ghost providing the opening voice-over, it stars the Sanderson sisters from the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus and includes a number of Disney villains in supporting roles.

Disney's Not-So-Spooky Spectacular

During a scary-fun fireworks show, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are taken to a mysterious haunted house where they meet dancing skeletons, waltzing ghosts, and a group of evil Disney villains!

This amazing show features state-of-the-art projection effects, lasers, lights, and fireworks, making it a truly enthralling night for both you and your young ones.

Mickey's Boo-To-You Halloween Parade

During this spellbinding parade, you can catch a glimpse of evil villains, scary ghouls, and a few other well-known characters as they float by.

This popular parade brings out a variety of scary-but-fun floats twice a night.

Where to eat

If you are looking to eat something besides the loads of Halloween candy your children get, there is plenty of Halloween-themed food and drink at eateries and food stands throughout the park.

Disney Villains After Hours

If Mickey's not-so-scary party isn't scary enough, you might want to try Disney Villains After Hours. Available on select nights in the fall with a separate ticket, this event caters to teenagers and adults.

There's a lot of scary fun in Disney Villains After Hours. Among the highlights are:

  • Thrilling entertainment with your favorite bad guys
  • Access to Magic Kingdom's most popular rides and shows with short wait times.
  • Ice cream treats, popcorn, and bottled drinks are all free with your event ticket and can be found at carts set up around the park.

Fall Dining Experiences

For a delicious fall-themed dining experience, consider Minnie's Halloween Dine at Hollywood & Vine or the Liberty Tree Tavern. Be sure to make reservations in advance for either experience.

Minnie's Halloween Dine at Hollywood & Vine

This charming restaurant is a great place to go if you're looking for great music, decorations, and tasty food. Celebrate with well-known Disney characters who are dressed perfectly for the season.

At this amazing lunch and dinner, you can share appetizers and then choose your own main course and dessert.

Liberty Tree Tavern

Pay homage to our country's founders while you eat at this elegant colonial-style inn that serves traditional New England food.

Celebrate American history with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for the whole family. The Patriot's Platter comes with traditional sides and roasted turkey breast, pot roast, and oven-roasted pork.

How to Get Tickets

Park Tickets

Before you purchase park tickets, it is best to review all your options of what would be most cost-efficient. Check out the hotel resorts within the Disney World park – many offer special packages that include tickets in their fees.

If you plan to visit more than one park, it may be better to purchase Park Hopper tickets directly from the Disney World site.

Additional Discounts: Florida residents can receive special offers, as can Annual Pass Members, Disney+ subscribers, members of the military, and more.

How to Get There

Airline tickets

Flying into Orlando International Airport will land you around a 30-minute drive from the main park.

Airport Shuttles like Mears Connect and The Sunshine Flyer need to be reserved in advance. Other options are car rentals, taxis, and rideshares like Uber and Lyft, which can be arranged at the airport.

If you choose the Lyft app, select the Minnie Van option, which is one of the most whimsical and comfortable rides.

Train

Taking the Amtrak train to Disney World is a great way to see the country and can be a lot of fun if you have extra travel time. The two closest stations are Kissimmee (15 miles from the resorts) and Orlando stations (20 miles away).

Where to Stay

Disney's campus hosts over 25 Disney Resort Hotels, categorized from Value to Deluxe. The resorts offer free transportation to the theme parks, with options including bus, boat, monorail, and Skyliner.

Prices at the resorts will depend on the types of amenities they offer. Some resorts, such as Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, host a multitude of amenities such as campfire activities, movies under the stars, spas, playgrounds, and arcades.

Families that don't need all the extra amenities may consider an affordable resort with basic amenities, such as Disney's All-Star Music Resort.

How to Spend Fall Break at Six Flags Great Adventure https://www.momswhothink.com/fall-break-at-six-flags-great-adventure/ https://www.momswhothink.com/fall-break-at-six-flags-great-adventure/#respond Wed, 27 Jul 2022 18:53:51 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=92637&preview=true&preview_id=92637 The post How to Spend Fall Break at Six Flags Great Adventure appeared first on Moms Who Think.

If your family is ready for a break this fall, then consider a weekend trip to the giant Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in Jackson, New Jersey. It’s close to midway between New York City and Philadelphia and offers a whole host of family-friendly rides and the biggest Halloween event in the state, Fright Fest.

Why Six Flags Great Adventure?

Being close to the New Jersey shore, Six Flags Great Adventure experiences milder weather in the fall than places further inland. If you live in the Northeast, or are coming from colder climates, this family-friendly theme park is a fun place to spend a weekend. It has a wide range of rides and activities that everyone in the family, from toddlers to teenagers, will enjoy. The theme is Warner Brothers characters, including cartoon favorites Bugs Bunny and Foghorn Leghorn for the little ones, and DC Comics superheroes like Superman and Wonder Woman for older kids. There are 15 kiddie rides, some of which have height requirements of only 36” with an accompanying adult. The thrill seekers in your family will love the El Toro roller coaster, which was recently voted the best in America. They’ll also get their adrenaline going with the Drop of Doom, Superman: Ultimate Flight, the Slingshot, and the Kingda Ka, the world’s tallest coaster. The whole family will enjoy the giant Ferris wheel, fender bender cars, and the Skyway cable car ride that takes you over a nearby lake. Visit this webpage to see all the rides and to book your tickets.

Superman ride at Six Flags Great America
Superman: The Ultimate Flight is lauded as one of the most intense roller coasters around. You'll find it at Six Flags Great Adventure.

When visiting Six Flags Great Adventure, be sure to save a half day for the incredible 350-acre Wild Safari Adventure animal park. Your family will be transported to the wilds of Africa as you drive through the natural habitat of African elephants, Grant's zebras, white rhinos, water buffalos, and ostriches. On the plains you’ll see herds of gazelles, giraffes, elands, waterbucks, gnus (wildebeests), and the occasional African lion and Bengal tiger. The Americas section has herds of bison, elk, llamas, and groups of bears. Be sure to bring your binoculars to see the most wildlife! The five-mile drive takes between one and three hours, depending on how long you stop to view the animals.

When To Go

Fall is a great time to visit Six Flags Great Adventure because the crowds are smaller and the weather is milder and not yet cold. Although the adjoining Hurricane Harbor water park closes after Labor Day, the theme park is open most Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays through the rest of the year. Visit this webpage for the full calendar. And as dark descends Sept. 16 through Oct. 31, the ghouls and scary creatures come out for Fright Fest. The park becomes filled with haunted attractions, scare zones, and roaming zombies to terrify only the bravest in your family. For an added scare, you can ride nine rides in the dark! Check out the park webpage for more information.

Getting There

Six Flags Great Adventure is located in Jackson, New Jersey just off of Interstate 195 about six miles east of Interstate 95. It’s about 25 minutes by car from Trenton, NJ; an hour from Philadelphia; and 90 minutes from New York City. Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, DC are all within a three-hour drive. If you’re coming from farther away and want to fly in, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) are the nearest major airports at just about an hour’s drive away. It’s a good idea to rent a car because the hotels nearest to the park are about 10 miles away.

The hotel also has a free hot breakfast to start your day and a sizable indoor pool to finish your day. This Hampton Inn & Suites is a comfortable, mid-range choice. Your family will not go hungry at Six Flags Great Adventure, which has more than 60 snack stands, eateries, and restaurants on site. They serve everything from popcorn, funnel cakes, Dippin’ Dots (at 5 locations!), burgers, pizzas, and more varied fare like Mexican quesadillas, Asian stir fry, pub-style bangers, and southern po boy sandwiches. Mom and dad will get a chance to relax with a tall cold one or a margarita at the Ale House, Sky Bar, or Wicked Brew. Just don’t overdo it if you plan to go back to the rides! When you’re heading back to the hotel and ready for a sit-down meal, consider one of the popular restaurants below.

La Piazza Ristorante

If your family hasn’t had its pizza fix yet, this is the place to get it! The authentic Italian dishes and pizza are outstanding. You can build your own old-fashioned “pie” or select from many gourmet options. There are also savory traditional plates like chicken parmigiana, veal piccata, and tilapia puttanesca. Little eaters will be happy with the cheese ravioli, spaghetti, or chicken fingers. La Piazza is just off of I-195 in Allentown and makes the perfect stop for dinner on your way back to Robbinsville or Hamilton. Check out their website for their extensive menu.

The Mug Rack

If you didn’t get your hotel breakfast, you can still fill up for the day at this local favorite that serves breakfast and lunch. The Mug Rack is not only delicious, it’s super affordable, too. They have a huge selection of omelets, pancakes, French toast, and breakfast sandwiches. If you’re in lunch mode, there’s a big menu of wraps, sandwiches, and burgers. Everybody will leave The Mug Rack quite full and ready for a day at Six Flags Great Adventure. The restaurant is just five miles from the theme park.

Malaga Restaurant

Looking for something completely different? Then add some “flamenco flavor” to your dinner experiences. The Malaga Restaurant brings Spanish Mediterranean cuisine to Hamilton Township, with incredibly good dishes like Paella a la Valenciana, a shellfish casserole, or shrimp in garlic sauce. Little kids will be content with mozzarella sticks, penne pasta, or fried baby shrimp. Malaga is on the expensive side, but worth it for a memorable night out. While chilly fall air starts to limit outdoor fun in much of the U.S., southern California is still warm and sunny. That’s what makes a fall trip to Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Vista, California such a great option. And unlike most other amusement parks that are open only on weekends in the fall, Knott’s remains open daily, giving you more flexibility in planning your visit. Here's a guide to planning your fall break at Knott's Berry Farm.

Knott's Berry Farm
Knott’s Berry Farm is the ideal fall break destination.

Why Knott’s Berry Farm?

Many call Knott’s Berry Farm an “old-style” amusement park because it caters to families and is steeped in nostalgia and Western history. Knott’s began as a family roadside berry stand in the 1920s, and it grew in popularity when the Knotts began serving fried chicken dinners. The waiting time for the dinners was so long that the Knotts started adding attractions like a replica ghost town to entertain visitors. By the 1950s, the Knotts had opened a “summer-long county fair” on their farm, and the amusement park was born.

Knott’s Berry Farm has grown tremendously since then, but it retains much of its county fair atmosphere. There’s a merry-go-round, bumper cars, and twirling rides for small kids, and an old-timey boardwalk lined with cotton candy and popcorn stands and arcade games that light up the night. There’s even a train ride and real-life stagecoach ride. This is not to say older kids and adults won’t find their thrills, however. There’s the Timber Mountain Log Ride with its steep plunge into a pool, and tall modern roller coasters like the HangTime, Silver Bullet, and the famous wooden GhostRider. Visit their website for more information and tickets. Knott’s also has a separate-admission water park called Soak City, which has 23 water slides, rafting rides, and a wave pool. It’s open on weekends in September through Sept. 18.

The Silver Bullet roller coaster is a thrill!

When you’re ready for a break from the rides, the Western history of Knott’s Berry comes alive in other attractions. Kids can pan for gold, visit a one-room schoolhouse, and pet horses at the livery stable. Craftsmen at the original Ghost Town demonstrate their blacksmithing and glass-blowing skills. Older kids and adults will be fascinated by the models of California missions and unusual exhibits at the Western Trails Museum.

Park guests will be entertained by the Ghost Town Train bandits.

If you want to make your trip to Knott’s Berry Farm a longer family vacation, Knott’s has the advantage of being close to many other attractions in southern California. It’s only 15 minutes from Disneyland, and it’s about 75 minutes from Universal Studios Hollywood. Of course, the beautiful southern California beaches are close by as well.

When To Go

As we mentioned, the great thing about visiting Knott’s Berry Farm in the fall is that it’s open daily through Jan. 1, except for Christmas Day. To get you scared for Halloween, “Knott’s Scary Farm” starts in late September and runs through Oct. 31, mostly Thursday through Sunday nights; check out their full calendar here. The whole park is transformed with haunted mazes, scary shows, and more than 1,000 creatures lurking in the fog ready to jump out at unsuspecting visitors. To save the kids 12 and younger from actual nightmares, come to Knott’s “Spooky Farm” before 7 pm when they can go trick-or-treating at the Calico town shops and see ghoulish shows without the big scares.

Knott’s Berry Farm becomes Knott's Scary Farm every fall for an added amount of seasonal fun!

Getting There

Knott’s Berry Farm is located in the heart of Orange County in southern California. It’s within metropolitan Los Angeles and about a 90-minute drive from San Diego. It’s also about a four-hour drive from Las Vegas and a six-hour drive from Phoenix. Knott’s is situated just off of California Highway 91 and is easily accessible from Interstate 5. There are several options for arriving by air. The John Wayne/Orange County Airport (SNA) is the closest airport–about 20 minutes away by car–and has many regional connections. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is about 30-40 minutes away by car and has more national connections. Ontario International Airport (ONT) often has cheaper flights but is about an hour’s drive from Knott’s. If you’re not driving your own car, you’ll probably want to get a rental car given the L.A. area’s dependence on roads and freeways.

Where To Stay

Being in the heart of Orange County means you will have many good lodging options for your visit to Knott’s Berry Farm. And surprisingly, many of those options are affordable and family friendly. Let’s take a look at our recommendations below.

Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel

We would be remiss if we didn’t suggest this comfortable hotel right next door to the theme park. It’s great for big families because it has spacious guest rooms that can be connected in sets of three. Little kids will love the Snoopy-themed wing with its Peanuts decor and take-home plush toys; be sure to ask for a room there if you have any Peanuts fans in your clan. The hotel has special packages that will help you save on admission to the park, too. Everybody will like cooling off at the large outdoor pool with a kids’ splash zone. To book your stay, visit the hotel website here

Holiday Inn Buena Park Hotel

If you’re traveling with a smaller group, consider this modern Holiday Inn just five minutes from Knott’s Berry Farm. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to the park Monday through Saturday. It has large, comfortable guest rooms that can accommodate up to four people, and some have patios. Rooms come with free wifi, and room service is available. There’s also an outdoor pool and indoor fitness center. For more information and to make a reservation, visit the hotel website here.

Best Inn & Suites Buena Park

For a great value option, consider this hotel that has newly remodeled rooms and is located near the southeast entrance of Knott’s Berry Farm. They have comfortable guest rooms and suites with kitchenettes. There are even family suites that feature bunk beds and a separate bedroom. The outdoor pool is on the small side, but it’s heated, which is a real plus. The Best Inn normally has a free hot breakfast, too; inquire when you book to see if they’ve resumed that service. If you’re looking for less expensive lodging without the sacrifices, the Best Inn & Suites is your best option. Visit their website here for more information and to make a booking.

Where To Eat

California is known for its high-quality food, and your family won’t be disappointed with the many great food options inside Knott’s Berry Farm. There’s the usual assortment of hot dog eateries, bakeries, funnel cake stands, and ice cream shops, but there are also several sit-down restaurants. Of course, you’ve got to try Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant, where her delicious fried chicken first made Knott’s famous.

Other dining options include a Panda Express, Prop Shop Pizzeria, and Johnny Rockets. You’ll find many eateries here have gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, too. But if you’re leaving the park for something different, check out the fun and tasty options below:

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

If your family is not ready to leave the fun behind at dinner time, then this dinner theater will keep it going! Just down the road from Knott’s Berry Farm, here you’ll immerse yourself in medieval Spain with a four-course feast fit for a queen. While you dine, you’ll cheer on your team’s knight in a real, live jousting tournament and a sword fight for the queen’s honor. Swooping falcons will impress everyone with their flying skills. After the show, you’ll get to meet the queen herself, and her knights and squires as well. If you haven’t gone back in time lately, this is the perfect place to do it!  Go to the Medieval Times website to make a reservation.

Pirates Dinner Adventure

Everyone in the family will be in awe of the swashbuckling adventure at this dinner theater just five minutes from Knott’s Berry Farm. Your evening starts with a three-course meal, and kids entrees are available. As you devour your meal, you’ll witness a story of bravery as galleon sailors fight off scurvy pirates with death-defying stunts, special effects, acrobatics, and swordplay. Your whole family will leave with full tummies and big smiles after this fun evening. Make your reservation at this website.

Rock & Brews

Down the street from Knott’s Berry Farm is this rock-themed restaurant and bar. They serve all the American comfort food you’d expect like juicy burgers, scrumptious tacos, fresh salads, pizzas, BBQ, and an assortment of steak and fish entrees. Rock & Brews is also known for its large selection of locally crafted beers. And there’s a kids menu for the 10 and under set. You can have fun gazing at all the rock music memorabilia covering the walls and ceiling. There really is something here for everyone, so if you can’t decide on a place to eat, Rock & Brews is the place to come. Check out their giant menu here.

If your family is looking for a break early in the school year, then Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, Kentucky may be your answer. When the Great Lakes region starts to cool down in September and October, Kentucky is still mild and generally has good weather, making it an ideal place to have fun outdoors. Although Kentucky Kingdom’s water park, Hurricane Bay, closes after Labor Day (naturally), the rest of the park remains open, ready to entertain families from throughout the Midwest. Here's how to plan the perfect fall break at Kentucky Kingdom.

Kentucky Kingdom aerial view
Fall break at Kentucky Kingdom is a no-brainer!

Why Kentucky Kingdom?

This amusement park in northern Kentucky was built to entertain everyone in the family, from toddlers to teenagers and parents. Open since 1987, this 67-acre park features at least 12 rides designed for preschoolers, and it has six roller coasters that will thrill even the biggest adrenaline junkies in your family. The Thunder Run and Lightning Run coasters are tall, but the T3 is the tallest coaster in the state. There’s even a classic wooden roller coaster. Adding to the nostalgia factor is a classic carousel and a giant Ferris wheel more suitable for family members who like tamer rides. There are plenty of in-between rides, too, that will excite kids age 5-12, like the 5-D cinema ride based on the Ice Age movies. Check out the Kentucky Kingdom website for more information and tickets.

Kentucky Kingdom offers more than just rides, however. There’s the King Louie’s Dance Party, a daily show that gives kids a chance to dance to their favorite songs. Other live entertainment is periodically offered at the park’s amphitheater. Also, next to the park, is the Kentucky Kingdom Gardens, which displays all the flowers and plants grown for the park in a year-round greenhouse.

When To Go

Kentucky Kingdom ends its daily operations and closes Hurricane Bay after Labor Day, but the rest of the park remains open every Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 30. This fall, the park is starting an all-new event called “Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom,” which runs every weekend in October (Oct. 1 – 30). The event features more than 1,000 carved pumpkins throughout the park, including some 12 feet high, that light up at dusk. There’s also a trick-or-treat trail and Halloween-themed live shows in the park’s amphitheater. If you and your teenagers are big rock music fans, consider coming for the “Louder Than Life Music Festival.” It’s held over four nights, Sept. 22-25, at the Kentucky Expo Center right next door to Kentucky Kingdom.

Getting There

Kentucky Kingdom is located within a four-hour drive of many major Midwestern cities like St. Louis; Indianapolis; Cincinnati; and Columbus, Ohio. It’s also a three-hour drive from Nashville and five hours from Chicago. It’s located right off of the intersection of Interstates 65 and 264. It’s also easily accessible from Interstates 64 and 71. If you’re coming from farther away and want to fly, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) is your airport and is only a few minutes by car from Kentucky Kingdom. Most major airlines in the U.S. have direct flights to Louisville from their hubs. Because the park is so close to the airport and there are many lodging options nearby, renting a car is purely optional.

Where To Stay

One of the great things about visiting Kentucky Kingdom is that there are many affordable, family-friendly hotels within five minutes of the park. (Being close to the airport and Expo Center only adds to the available options.) Most hotels are the big brand names you’re already familiar with and range from simple motel rooms to pricier suites. You’ll surely find an option well suited to your budget, and all the hotels listed below are just minutes away from Kentucky Kingdom.

Home2 Suites by Hilton Louisville Airport Expo Center

This all-suite hotel is perfect for larger families looking to spread out. All the studio and one-bedroom suites come with a full kitchen, free wifi, and 50-inch HDTV, and it’s possible to book adjoining rooms. This modern hotel also features an indoor pool, a fitness center, and a free hot breakfast. Even better, it offers free parking if you’re driving, and if not, a free shuttle to and from the airport. Your family will no doubt be comfortable at the Home2 Suites by Hilton

Springhill Suites by Marriott Louisville Airport

Smaller families will feel very comfortable at this upscale, yet affordable hotel. The family-friendly Springhill Suites features studio suites with kitchenettes, an indoor pool, a fitness center, and a free breakfast. Kids 12 and under stay free. There’s also a free shuttle to and from the airport that will make getting here a breeze. To make a reservation at this Springhill Suites, visit their website.

Sleep Inn Louisville Airport & Expo

If you’d like to save money and can live without some frills, this Sleep Inn is a good value with its updated and comfortable rooms and suites. All the rooms have free wifi, and pet-friendly rooms are available. There’s no indoor pool, but there is a small fitness center. The lobby has free coffee and free “grab ‘n go” breakfast items like muffins. If you don’t plan to spend much time at your hotel, the Sleep Inn Louisville is a good place to save money without sacrificing comfort. Check out the hotel website to make a reservation.

Where To Eat

Kentucky Kingdom has several good eating options to satisfy your family’s appetite while enjoying the park. There’s a bakery, funnel cake shop, hot dog place, and Kingdom Hot Chicken for Kentucky-style fried chicken sandwiches. Casa Mia has some good flatbread pizzas, and Bourbon Craft House features smoky BBQ pulled pork, and of course, Kentucky bourbon for mom and dad. That said, there are plenty of great options outside the park when dinner time comes around:

Frank’s Deli

Looking for a quick but delicious dinner? Try this deli inside Frank’s Meats and Produce. They source all of their top-quality meats and cheeses locally, and it shows in their scrumptious hot plates, sandwiches, and sides. On the weekend, they serve, among other things, a half-pound hamburger, a bratwurst, and smoked spare ribs that are out of this world. Everything is made fresh to order. It’s so good, your clan may just want to come back the next night. Check out Frank’s menu here.

Hometown Pizza

There’s no family-pleaser like deep-dish pizza topped with fresh ingredients. You’ll find that and more at this popular family restaurant. Hometown Pizza has been serving mouth-watering thick- and thin-crust pizzas since 1982. They also offer a variety of salads and Italian favorites like baked spaghetti, chicken alfredo, lasagna, stromboli, and meatball sandwiches. If you’d rather just skip right to dessert, the dessert pizza is for you! Everyone in your family is guaranteed to come away full and happy after eating at Hometown Pizza.

Mirage Mediterranean

After a day or two of amusement park fare, your family might be ready for something different. The outstanding Mediterranean cuisine here will certainly fit the bill! Appetizers like hummus or stuffed grape leaves will whet your appetite, and lamb kabobs, beef shawarma, or a gyro platter will satiate it. Pickier kids can always order the chicken tenders or fried mozzarella sticks. Mirage Mediterranean is a great way to diversify your eating options while in Louisville.

Is your family looking for a break from the chilly fall air? Do you have Lego fans in your midst? Then look no further than Legoland California. Located in sunny Carlsbad, California between Los Angeles and San Diego, this 129-acre park was the first Legoland in North America. Since it opened in 1999, it has grown into a full-sized resort oriented to families with kids of all ages. Here your planning guide for fall break at Legoland.

Why Legoland California?

Southern California’s fall weather is warm and sunny, which makes Legoland California the perfect place for a fall family break. (In the fall, Legoland Florida is at risk of hurricanes, and Legoland New York gets cold and closes in October.)  Legoland California also has the greatest range of activities that the whole family can enjoy. The main park has eight themed sections with more than 60 rides, including four roller coasters; a 4-D cinematic experience that takes you inside the Lego movies; a building zone where kids can create Lego structures to their heart’s content; and a variety of live-action shows throughout the day.

Splash battle at Legoland California
Fall break at Legoland California is a guaranteed blast for all ages!

The Legoland Water Park has several water slides and kid-friendly water features, including a lazy river ride where kids can build their own raft out of soft Lego blocks! The interactive Sea Life Aquarium has a range of hands-on exhibits and several shows that teach kids (and adults) about marine life from around the world. For a full description of attractions, visit the park’s website here. It’s easy to spend several days experiencing everything there is to do at Legoland California.

For a longer family vacation, Legoland California is ideal because it’s central to many other popular attractions in southern California. San Diego to the south has SeaWorld and the world-famous San Diego Zoo and its Safari Park. To the north is Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm, and to the west are the beautiful beaches of Carlsbad and Oceanside.

When To Go

One of the benefits of visiting Legoland California in the fall is that it’s open daily for the rest of the year, except for a few Wednesdays in November and December, and the Sea Life Aquarium is open every day. The Legoland Water Park is open every weekend in the fall through Oct. 30. Check out the park calendar for details. To get your family geared up for Halloween, Legoland hosts their “Brick-or-Treat Monster Party” that is suitable for toddlers, kids, and tweens. It runs every Saturday, Sept. 17 through Oct. 29, and features trick-or-treating stations, a costume contest, new Halloween-themed live entertainment, Lego character meet-and-greets, and a monster-themed dance party. Visit this park webpage for more information. Fall really is a special time of year to visit Legoland California!

Getting There

Legoland California is located in Carlsbad, California just a few minutes from Interstate 5. It’s about a two-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles and a 75-minute drive from Anaheim. If you’re driving from the south, it’s only about 40 minutes from San Diego. Las Vegas is about five hours via Interstates 15 and 5, and Phoenix is about six hours via Interstates 8 and 5. Flying in is probably a better option from points farther away. San Diego International Airport (SAN) is the closest major airport and is about a 45-minute drive to Legoland. John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Anaheim is the next closest option and is about an hour away. Given California’s reliance on freeways, renting a car is probably a good idea.

Where To Stay

The Legoland California Resort has two hotels that really take the Lego experience to the next level with Lego-themed decor and experiences for the kids. They are also right next to the theme park, so the convenience factor can’t be beat. They’re also more expensive than many nearby options, but you generally get more for your money in terms of the Lego experience. If you buy a hotel and park package, kids will get a treasure hunt and free gift in their room, and the whole family will get early access to the park. Unfortunately, discounts on park tickets do not appear to be one of the benefits.

Legoland California Hotel

Frequently rated one of the top family-friendly hotels in America, this resort hotel will give your Lego fans a vacation to remember. It features a welcome treasure hunt for kids, and suites have separate Lego-themed rooms that come with a bucket of Lego bricks. Younger Lego fans will be thrilled to stay here! The hotel also has a large, heated swimming pool where families can rent cabanas and kids can build creations out of Lego soft bricks. A free daily hot breakfast is offered in the Lego-decorated Bricks restaurant, which also serves a dinner buffet. Kids will enjoy the nightly themed entertainment, too. Visit the hotel website for more information and to make a reservation.

Legoland Castle Hotel

If you have family members that have graduated from Lego fans to fanatics, then you have to consider this slightly more expensive hotel at the Legoland resort. Shaped like a castle built of giant legos, this hotel has interactive Lego features throughout the hotel, premium suites with separate Lego-themed rooms filled with Lego models and surprises, and an outdoor castle courtyard with more interactive activities. Families still get a free hot breakfast; access to a heated, zero-entry pool with water play features; and nightly themed entertainment for the kids. Your Lego fanatics will be so enchanted that they will want to come back again! Visit the hotel website to book your stay.

Legoland Castle Hotel offers perfect accommodations for your fall break at Legoland.
The Legoland Castle Hotel is like staying in a life-size Lego castle!

Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort

For families who don’t need an immersive Lego experience, or who want to spend more time at the beach, this resort right on the coast is a great choice. It’s less expensive than the Legoland hotels, and it’s only a 12-minute drive to the park. Families will appreciate suites that sleep four and the availability of adjoining guest rooms. The resort has a beautiful pool overlooking the ocean; an on-site spa; and rentable beach packs that include an umbrella, two chairs, two towels, and bottled water. There’s also a free shuttle to Legoland and a concierge who can help plan your day at the park. If you’re looking for a good mix of adult amenities and kid fun for your vacation, book your stay at the Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach

Where To Eat

Legoland California has the usual selection of theme park fare, including popcorn, ice cream, burgers, pizza, and churros (okay, that last one is a California thing). But it also has some more upscale restaurant options like Everything Is Ramen, Knights’ Smokehouse BBQ, and Fun Town’s Urban Kitchen, which offers freshly made sandwiches and salads. When your hungry family is ready for something more substantial, we recommend the nearby restaurants below.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company

This California chain is popular for a good reason. Nearly everyone raves about the quality of the food and the big craft beer selection. Mom and Dad will salivate over the beer sausages, blackened mahi tacos, grilled firecracker salmon, or the 12-ounce ribeye steak. Smaller kids will go for the mac & cheese or fish & chips from the “kiddos” menu, while more adventurous teenagers will gravitate toward the grass-fed burger or ahi poke nachos. There are also a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. The whole family will come away satisfied after eating at Karl Strauss!

Karl Strauss Brewing Company
The menu at Karl Strauss Brewing Company offers a wide variety of options for the many palates in your family!

2051 Cucina Italiana

When you’re ready to elevate your Italian game from theme park pizza, then you must try this upscale spot just 10 minutes from Legoland. They offer delectable entrées like gnocchi primavera, tagliatelle cacio, clams in white wine sauce, and homemade Italian sausage. Kids stuck in pizza mode can try the excellent margherita or diavola pizzas, and smaller kids have options they’ll favor like the kids pasta and chicken tenders. A bonus: everyone will be thrilled watching the small planes landing and taking off at the McClellan-Palomar Airport next door. Check out the full menu at 2051 Cucina Italiana here

Bluewater Grill

Do the ocean breezes and crashing waves have you craving seafood? Then this excellent restaurant in downtown Carlsbad is your antidote. It’s only 15 minutes from Legoland. Their menu will have you swimming with choices like walnut-crusted halibut from Alaska, pan-seared sea scallops, mussels with Spanish chorizo, or oven-baked lobster tail. “Guppies” 10 and under can pick fun items like shrimp dipping sticks or the “shark attack”–a blueberry soda with gummy sharks circling at the top. No matter what you choose, everyone will have their seafood cravings satiated at the Bluewater Grill

Maybe your family didn’t get enough fun time over the summer. Or maybe you’re a month into the school year, and you’re ready for a break. Either way, Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania is a fun escape over any weekend in the fall. This candy theme park not only has a ton of family-friendly rides, it includes a wildlife park, gardens, and, of course, a chocolate museum. Hersheypark also has three nearby resorts that offer a range of accommodations. Your whole family is bound to have a great time and a much-welcomed break at Hersheypark, known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth®.” Here's your planning guide to fall break at Hersheypark.

Why Hersheypark?

Hershey’s chocolate is as American as apple pie, and what kid doesn’t love the classic candy bar? They’re also likely fans of Hershey’s other brands, like Twizzlers, Reese’s, and Jolly Rancher. So when their favorite treats are combined with 76 rides–including 15 roller coasters–spread over 121 acres, they will be in kids’ heaven. Hersheypark is the largest American theme park outside California and Florida, and most of its attractions remain open in the fall. Hersheypark has been a family-oriented park since its inception in 1906, and seems to become more popular every year. In 2022, the park added its tallest and highest roller coaster, the “Candymonium,” and two, smaller Jolly Rancher-themed rides. Younger kids and toddlers can have plenty of fun on more than 20 rides designed just for them. Visit the Hersheypark website for more information and tickets.

There’s more to Hersheypark than fun rides, however. When it’s time for a break from all the twirling and plunging, the family can head to ZooAmerica, Hersheypark’s 11-acre wildlife park featuring over 200 animals. Next to Hersheypark is Hershey’s Chocolate World, where you can see how chocolate is made and design and make your own candy bar. And if you still haven’t had enough chocolate, check out the Hershey Story Museum in downtown Hershey. It has interactive exhibits that teach how Milton S. Hershey mastered the modern process of making milk chocolate. It also gives everyone age 5 and up a chance to make their own chocolatey confections in the Chocolate Lab. With so many things to do in the land of Hershey, you and your family will want to come back in the summer for a longer stay!

For fall break at Hersheypark, check out Chocolate World!
Everything's coming up chocolate at Hershey’s Chocolate World!

When To Go

Hersheypark ends its daily operations and closes its water park and boardwalk after Labor Day, but the rest of the park remains open every Saturday and Sunday through Jan. 1. It’s also open for long weekends around Halloween and Thanksgiving. You can get tickets at this link. To get you ready for Halloween, Hersheypark opens four haunted houses on weekends from Sept. 17 to Oct. 30; they call these weekend evenings their “Dark Nights.” Fall weather in southeastern Pennsylvania tends to remain mild, but be prepared for chilly days and cold nights in November and December.

Getting There

Hersheypark is located within a three-hour drive of many major northeastern cities, including Pittsburgh, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC. It’s easily accessible from Interstates 76, 78, 81, and 83. If you’re coming from farther away and want to fly, the closest airport is Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) in Middletown, which is about a 15-minute drive to Hersheypark. You’ll most likely have to connect through an airline hub to get to Harrisburg, however.

Where To Stay

The first places to consider for your stay are the three “official” Hersheypark resorts: Hershey Lodge, The Hotel Hershey, and the Hersheypark Camping Resort, which is open weekends through October. The advantage with these Hershey-owned properties is that by booking here, you get discounts on park tickets, a free shuttle ride to and from the park, special activities at the park, and extra hours at the park. The lodge and hotel are expensive, but there are cheaper options about 10 minutes away in Harrisburg if you’re driving or renting a car. Let’s take a look at your best fall options:

The Hotel Hershey

For a luxurious experience in Hershey, this is your place. This elegant and historic hotel has been hosting families since 1933. It features an indoor swimming pool with splash pad for little kids, the Chocolate Spa with chocolate-themed spa treatments, a large sports and fitness complex, access to the Hershey Country Club and its two top-ranked 18-hole golf courses, and five on-site restaurants open in fall. The casual Harvest restaurant serves seasonal dishes inspired by fall. Accommodations include guest rooms, suites, and the more spacious woodside cottages. To book your stay at this unforgettable hotel, visit the hotel website.

Stay at Hotel Hershey for fall break at Hersheypark.
The Hotel Hershey is one of several Hershey lodging options – perfect for your fall break at Hersheypark.

Hershey Lodge

This accommodation option is larger and a little less expensive than the Hotel Hershey. Families visiting during the fall will love its 30,000-square-foot indoor water park that features a host of candy-themed water slides and other playful water features. There’s also a new fitness center onsite and parents have access to the MeltSpa in downtown Hershey. Everyone in the family will find something they love to eat at the five on-site restaurants serving a wide range of family favorites in the fall. To make a reservation at Hershey Lodge, visit their website.

Residence Inn by Marriott

A more affordable lodging option for families is this all-suite hotel in Harrisburg about a 10-minute drive from Hersheypark. You won’t get the Hersheypark resort benefits here, but you will save considerably on the recently updated one- and two-bedroom suites that feature full kitchens. There’s also a free hot breakfast to get your day of activity started. To book this fine hotel, visit its Marriott webpage here

Where To Eat

You’ll find no shortage of family-friendly places to eat both inside Hersheypark and outside. Hersheypark itself has dozens of places to get snacks, ice cream, donuts, hot dogs, and sandwiches. For more substantial meals, try Moe’s Southwest Grill, which serves great burritos, or the Chocolatier Restaurant & Bar, which has salads, burgers, and flatbreads. Be sure to save room for Chocolatier’s signature desserts made from — what else? — Hershey’s chocolate. If you’re looking for something different from the theme park and resort restaurants, try one of these excellent dining options in Hershey:

Piazza Sorrento

If you love authentic Italian cuisine, then you can’t miss this top-rated restaurant just outside Hersheypark. For starters, try their garlic shrimp crostini or homemade meatballs in marinara sauce. For a main entree, you can’t go wrong with the steak and blue cheese alfredo or homemade fettuccine. Kids will certainly love the top-notch pizzas at Piazza Sorrento!

Devon Seafood + Steak

For the best surf and turf meal in downtown Hershey, look no further than this chic local favorite. The incredibly fresh seafood and high-quality meats, paired with excellent wines, produce unforgettable meals. The char-crusted Hawaiian ahi tuna or for the truly hungry, the 18-ounce bone-in ribeye, are some of the best entrees. The 12-and-under menu has kid-pleasers like chicken tenders, grilled chicken, and mini lobster-rolls. Visit their website to learn more.

The Hershey Pantry

If your family loves breakfast and brunch, then you’ve got to visit this popular all-day breakfast spot. The Hershey Pantry is known for its over-the-top stuffed French toast and Tracy’s Chicken and Waffle served with honey butter and a touch of cayenne. Kids of all ages will go for the buttermilk pancakes. And perfect for fall, kids will get warmed up with the s’mores baked cocoa oatmeal coupled with a toasted marshmallow hot cocoa. After the Pantry, your whole clan will be ready to take on Hersheypark!
