Sometimes, there’s nothing better than pulling up to your favorite breakfast joint and enjoying a hearty meal with a delicious stack of pancakes and syrup. Being able to eat breakfast any time of the day is what makes many breakfast restaurants so popular. One of the most popular breakfast restaurants is, of course, Denny’s. While Denny’s will always have a special place in my family’s heart, these top six breakfast spots are better.

Let’s look at what makes them delicious and what they bring to the table in order to compete with the beloved Denny’s. (Read: These Foods Are Best For Kids Before and After School.)

Why Do People Love Denny’s?

Denny's Restaurant in Ramona

Before we get into the nitty gritty of breakfast joints that make your head and heart sing, let’s examine why so many people love Denny’s.

For starters, Denny’s is open 24 hours a day. This makes it convenient for families to roll up any time, especially during traveling! Here, they can enjoy delicious and savory breakfasts that are perfect for refueling.

Secondly, Denny’s is family oriented. This means those with large parties or small children feel comfortable in the setting. With the cozy and family-friendly atmosphere and comfort foods, Denny’s rarely misses the mark.

Best Menu Items at Denny’s

Denny’s is a hot spot for tasty and filling breakfast meals all day. While there are so many mouthwatering items on the menu, here are several favorites.

  • The Grand Slamwich
  • Grand Slam Slugger
  • French Toast Slam
  • Wild West Omelette
  • All-American Slam
  • Country Fried Steak and Eggs
  • Lumberjack Slam
  • Choconana Pancake Breakfast
  • Cinnamon Roll Pancake Breakfast

Are There Better Breakfast Places Out There?

As popular and beloved as Denny’s is, it’s hard to deny that there are, in fact, better breakfast joint options. This is especially true for families. Whether you are looking for a different atmosphere, menu options, or price, here are the top breakfast places that beat Denny’s. (In some people’s eyes.)

Waffle House

Waffle House is one of the most popular breakfast restaurants in the United States. Like Denny’s, it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Additionally, Waffle House has menu options and prices similar to Denny’s. One of their customer favorites is called the All-Star Special. This includes a waffle of your choice, a sausage or bacon, eggs, toast, and a side.

Waffle House

The atmosphere at Waffle House is slightly different, as most Waffle Houses tend to be smaller than Denny’s, with a simple and practical environment. They don’t necessarily give the same cozy vibe that Denny’s does.

So, while Denny’s may have a cozier atmosphere, Waffle House is quick and reasonably priced, and you can still get meals similar to Denny’s.

Cracker Barrel

Southern breakfast restaurants are appealing to families for many reasons. They are typically relaxing and family oriented. This means that families feel comfortable bringing their children into these types of restaurants without feeling judged. (Most of the time.)

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel is the epitome of the perfect southern restaurant. You have Southern hospitality with friendly wait staff, and the shop customers can peruse while waiting.

Furthermore, their affordable meals are down-home comfort food, which is perfect. This includes their breakfasts, which can be purchased all day. There’s no need to rush out the door in the morning for those grits, hashbrowns, and eggs. Any time of the day will suffice, meaning it doesn’t matter when those cravings hit!

Bob Evans

You can order more than just breakfast at Bob Evans, but why would you want to? At Bob Evans, families can eat at a decent price. Even better? The portion sizes match up or even exceed what you are paying for.

Bob Evans

Are you in the mood for a protein-filled breakfast? Then try the steak tips omelet. On the other hand, a delicious platter of double chocolate hotcakes is a family favorite. Additionally, Bob Evans has a very family-friendly atmosphere that is perfect for families who want a casual dining experience.

Panera

Technically, Panera is a bakery, not necessarily a breakfast shop. However, bakeries are among the best places to get yummy breakfast foods. While you can’t get breakfast at Panera all day, you can stop in before 10:30 a.m. on the weekdays and grab one of their delicious menu options.

Panera

Are you and your kids in the mood for some filling oats? Try Panera’s steel-cut oatmeal with strawberries and pecans. Or are you in the mood for a tasty sandwich? Then, opt for the Asiago Sausage and Egg Sandwich.

At Panera, families also enjoy the relaxed environment and cafe-focused atmosphere.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin’ Donuts is one of the top coffee competitors, right next to Starbucks. While you can’t sit in front of a savory hot plate of pancakes and bacon at Dunkin’ Donuts, it’s still a top contender.

Here, you can grab a quick breakfast and drink to help you through the day.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin’s most popular menu item is its coffee. Whether you like hot, frozen, or iced, Dunkin’ has you covered. They also have tasty breakfast wraps, donuts, and more to help fuel you for a long day.

IHop

IHop is very similar to Denny’s in that it has a very family-friendly atmosphere. If your children love pancakes, IHop is the place to take them. The pancakes are described as some of the very best around. These delicious breakfasts include the Cinn-A-Stack with cinnamon roll filling and cream cheese icing. Talk about mouthwatering!

One Last Note

If you are looking for a great breakfast place that is better than Denny’s, look no further. All these restaurants are worth the try, whether you are looking for a quick pick-me-up or a hot and delicious breakfast platter. Take your pick, and you be the judge. There’s no denying that McDonald’s is one of the most popular fast-food restaurants. Their target audience is undoubtedly children. From the bright colors, toys, and their famous Ronald McDonald, kids can’t help but love this restaurant. While some will argue that it’s not the healthiest option, others will say letting your kids indulge in their favorites from this beloved restaurant occasionally won’t hurt. I don’t like everything McDonald’s makes, but my kids do love these six menu items.

Why is McDonald’s So Popular with Kids?

When you were a kid, did you ever beg your parents to run through the McDonald’s drive-through? If you could only get your hands on that delicious kid’s menu and see what surprise toy they put in it this time! McDonald’s is a favorite pastime for many. When it comes to kids’, this restaurant knows what it is doing.

Their philosophy has always been, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. What McDonald’s has been doing for years has worked. This is why you do not see them change much about their menu or restaurants. Kids love their simple menu items that are simultaneously delicious. At the same time, parents love that this restaurant doesn’t break the bank. While they aren’t everyone’s favorite, my kids love these six McDonald’s menu items.

Chicken McNuggets

Undoubtedly, the most popular McDonald’s menu item is their chicken McNuggets. You can order a four-piece or a six piece around 170 calories (this is per 4 chicken McNuggets. This makes some parents feel better if they worry about how many calories are in the McDonald’s kids’ meals.

Chicken McNuggets

Additionally, the Chicken McNuggets can be ordered in a larger size. Such as the 10-piece or even a 50-piece if you feed a family. With the juicy chicken and crispy batter in every bite, it’s no wonder kids choose the chicken McNuggets over and over.

French Fries

McDonald’s French fries are among the world’s most popular French fries, and for good reason. They have perfected their French fries to the point that putting them down gets harder and harder with every bite.

French Fries

Buying anything from McDonald’s for your child is hard without including the French fries. This is where the kid’s menu comes in handy. For less than $6 typically, your child can enjoy their favorite main menu item and a side of fries. It’s a win-win.

Cheeseburger

Keeping it simple is always a good idea with a kid. Especially if they are picky, this is where the cheeseburgers and hamburgers come in. The burger is 100% beef patty with a little seasoning.

Cheeseburger

If your kids love all the works, they will enjoy the cheese, onions, ketchup, mustard, and pickles on the cheeseburger. Of course, if you have a picky child like me, you can always ask for the extras to be removed. A simple slice of cheese, a beef patty, and a few pickles are perfect for kids who do not like all extras.

Shake

The milkshakes at McDonald’s make a perfect treat for kids and adults alike. They blend milk with ice cream until the perfect texture has been created. In addition to the creamy texture, the shakes have the flavor perfected to a T. They aren’t too sweet but perfect enough to curb those sweet tooth cravings.

Shake

Technically, McDonald’s Shake could be considered a milkshake, but they avoid that word. Instead, a simple shake is used to define this sweet dessert. This is because, in some states, the amount of milk may not be enough to be considered a milkshake because of regulations. Therefore, McDonald’s keeps things simple enough.

McChicken

Sometimes, kids don’t want a beef patty or chicken in the shape of a nugget. Instead, they choose a juicy chicken breast that hits the spot just right. A McChicken includes the crispy breaded chicken on top of a toasted wheat bun.

McChicken

You can also choose to get all the fixings on your McChicken. These include mayonnaise and lettuce. While it is a delicious meal, it is also high in calories and contains a lot of fat, at 357 calories per sandwich, so it can make some parents do a double-take.

McDouble

Another of my kids’ favorites from McDonald’s is the popular McDouble. The burger includes two beef patties made with 100% beef. Each patty is topped with American cheese and stacked on top of one another.

McDouble

Another reason the McDouble is so delicious is the extra ingredients that add to the savory flavor of the beef patties. These include pickles, onions, mustard, and ketchup. Of course, if your child is picky, just ask those ingredients to be removed.

In Conclusion

McDonald’s may be one of the most popular fast-food restaurants worldwide, but that doesn’t mean everything they make is appetizing, especially for children. However, kids tend to gobble up these six McDonald’s menu items, I know for a fact that my kids love them.

Chores are a necessary evil for many families. Some people embrace them; others feel like they aren’t worth the fight with their kids. When it comes to our children, however, teaching them how to do chores is worth the fight. It comes with many benefits. When I began making these changes to our routine, I started hearing less complaining about chores from my kids. Do they love doing chores? Not always, but if you are looking for some tried and true changes to make to your routine, look no further. Below, we will explore 12 changes to your routine that can make a big difference.

Are Chores Important?

Introducing chores to your kids while they are young is very important. Chores teach children a host of important skills; here are several that they will need as they grow into adulthood:

  • Accepting responsibility
  • Organizational skills
  • Time management skills
  • Promotes higher self-esteem
  • Teaches delayed gratification

Focus on Age Appropriate Chores

One of the areas that parents get hung up on is introducing age-appropriate chores. You don’t want to burden a young child with too many chores they can’t necessarily do yet. However, making the chore list too easy on older kids isn’t very beneficial either.

The AACAP gives examples of age-appropriate chores. For 4 to 5-year-olds, they suggest having your child help feed pets and make their beds. Children between 10 and 11 should be able to help clean bathrooms and do yard work. You can read the rest of the age suggestions here.

Change Your Wording

Happy mother and little daughter talking, sharing news, sitting on comfortable couch in living room, young mum and adorable preschool girl chatting, family spending weekend together at home

The word chores can be offputting to some people. Think of Cinderella having to scrub the floors for her evil stepmother. You can change your family’s attitude around chores by changing the wording. This one simple change to your routine can make a big difference.

Instead of calling them chores, change your wording to responsibilities. I use the phrase, we all live in this home, so we all have responsibilities to take care of it. This helps put chores into perspective for kids and even adults.

Be Consistent

If you aren’t consistent with what you are asking your kids, they will most likely never get on board. Setting up a chore chart but not enforcing a time when your children should do it is not helping anyone. Remember, consistency is key when introducing anything new into your routine.

Set Clear Expectations

From the get-go, you need to set clear expectations. What do you expect your children to do? Will there be a chore chart, reward chart, etc? Do you expect your child to do these chores every day, every other day, weekly? When your children know the clear plan, they are less likely to put off doing chores.

Have a Family Meeting/Collaborate on Chores

Instead of assigning your children their chores, have a family meeting. This is a good way to collaborate on shared responsibilities and invest your children in doing their chores.

Sit down together as a family and list responsibilities that must be done daily and weekly. Then, split them into age-appropriate categories. Ask your children if they have any preferences for what responsibilities they would want to take over. The more collaboration that goes on when deciding where to split the chores, the more your child will likely be on board.

Avoid Doing the Chore for Your Child

When a child is doing a chore, it doesn’t always get done to perfection. This is something that may drive a parent batty. However, it’s important to remember that practice makes progress. The more a child does a specific chore, the more they will increase their skills.

However, if you are constantly stepping in and doing this chore for them or fixing how they do it, you send mixed messages to your child. You are telling your child, ‘I want you to do this chore, but only this way, and if you don’t do it the right way, then I’ll come behind you and fix it.” This can deflate your child’s enthusiasm and zeal.

Start Small

When introducing chores to your child, be sure to start small. You don’t want to bombard your child with overwhelming tasks right away. Start by introducing one specific task they can do for a few weeks to get used to the new routine. Then, once they have tackled this task, add another one. Keep doing this until you have added enough age-appropriate chores for your child. But remember, don’t overload them either!

Take the Time to Teach Your Child

Close up of vacuum cleaner brush cleaning carpet on floor. Woman using portable cordless vacuum cleaner. Daily routine and household chores

One of the biggest hang-ups when introducing chores to a child is not teaching them the right way to do something. Sometimes, it’s easy to assume our children know how to do something correctly. After all, didn’t they see us do it over and over? However, this isn’t always the case.

Before introducing your child to a new chore, take the time to teach them how to do it. Worry less about doing it perfectly and more with creating the skills to perform the task. You may have to do the chore with your child several times before they catch on. This is especially true with younger kids.

Use a Reward System or Calendar

Another way to get kids excited about chores is using a reward system. There are many ways of doing this. Some families use stickers; others use calendars or points. If you are looking for some ideas, take a look here.

Switch up the Timing

Trying to do chores when your child is tired from a long day can lead to frustration for both of you. Instead, split the tasks into manageable bite sizes. Determine when your child is the most refreshed and have them do most of their chores during this time. You could save one or two chores for after dinner but try not to make it too overwhelming by having them complete all their chores in one big chunk.

Set a Minimum Standard

Things happen, and sometimes life gets in the way. It’s unrealistic to think your child will be able to complete their chores every day without fail. However, you can set a minimum standard, so your children know what to expect. Such as making their beds every day. (This is a quick chore that doesn’t take much time.) However. for bigger chores, like doing the dishes, you can set the expectation that they can get that chore done at least 3-5 times a week. (Decide what works for your family.)

Give Positive Feedback

Everyone thrives on positive feedback. So, when you see your child making an effort with their chores, let them know you see their effort. This boosts their self-confidence and desire to do their best at their tasks.

One Last Note

It’s normal to have a love-hate relationship with chores. They are necessary for a family to create smooth days and transitions. However, the chores often fall on the parents’ shoulders. While this makes sense, having your child contributes to the family responsibilities is good for everyone. After all, they live in their home too. If you are looking for ways to introduce chores to your children, try adding one or more changes to your family routine. You may find it is exactly what you need as a family.

Being a parent is no cakewalk. Throughout centuries, there have been societal rules for parents that have come and gone. Yet not all of these parenting ‘rules’ are good for parents and families. They can stress out parents and make them feel like there’s only one way to do their jobs as parents. Furthermore, these rules may affect the relationship between the child and the parent. Of course, societal expectations have changed throughout time. However, today, there are still many parenting ‘rules’ that aren’t beneficial at all.

While we can’t make a comprehensive list, that would be way too long; here are some of the most common parenting rules parents are fed up with.

Making Your Child Clean Their Plate

Several Redditors in this post shared the parenting rules they refuse to enforce on their kids. One of the most common ones was forcing children to clear their plates. This is typically done by refusing to allow a child to get up from the table until they finish their entire plate. It makes sense to some parents because they don’t want to waste food. After all, food prices can add up.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Studies have shown that forcing kids to eat their entire plate is the opposite of beneficial. This can teach them to ignore their body signals that lets them know when they are full. It can also promote an unhealthy relationship with food as they grow.

Instead, one tip while preparing a meal is to add healthy food items to the plate you know your child will eat. This way, they are at least getting some nutrients from food you know they like. Additionally, giving your child fewer portions can help them get the nutrients they need but not feel forced to eat more than their body wants.

Forcing Kids to Hug/Kiss Relatives

To some, making their kids show affection to others is a good idea. After all, they want their children to be respectful. Other times, some adults simply don’t want their family or friends to feel offended. However, teaching a child to ignore physical autonomy and their decision-making isn’t good for anyone. All it is doing is stroking another person’s ego.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Making a child hug another person, especially an adult, just because they asked isn’t beneficial. It teaches them that they should always do what another adult or person asks, just to be respectful. Additionally, this practice teaches children to ignore the inner cues that tell them something is wrong. Not every person is a safe person. Simply because a person is an adult doesn’t mean your child has to automatically respect them and give up their own autonomy to make them happy.

Additionally, it may teach children that what they feel doesn’t really matter and they should ignore their own comfort level for someone else.

Making Sure Your Child Matches at All Times

Sometimes, parents feel the pressure to make sure their child matches and looks tidy at all times. This is especially true when they venture out into public. However, sometimes children have very eccentric styles, and you have to choose which hill you are willing to die on. Sometimes, there are bigger hills that are more important.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Worrying about your child matching all the time is a battle that can put immense stress on parents, especially if you have a child who has a very unique style. Sometimes, kids just like what they like. Furthermore, how we dress can outwardly express our personality, likes, and more. Children love to be free enough to explore what they love and don’t love, even if it’s not what their parents like.

Because I Said So

Upset mother and daughter sitting back to back on the couch, avoiding talking and staring, mom and teenage girl fighting or arguing, stubborn parent and child refusing to compromise.

A shared parenting saying is ‘because I said so.’ This is often used to get children to comply and accept the rules or consequences as is. It is also used as a cop-out not to explain anything to children.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Children are naturally curious. Additionally, while respect is important during communication, children should be allowed to ask questions. Questioning rules, boundaries, or why things are the way they are isn’t always bad. It can encourage children to go beyond what they are told, understand, and research things for themselves.

Never Apologizing to Your Kids When You Are Wrong

Sometimes, it’s easy to have the mindset that ‘I am the parent, I don’t need to apologize.” However, this mindset actually can do more harm than good.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Children need to see the adults in their lives own up to their mistakes. It teaches them that you can make mistakes at any age. It also allows children to see what it is to be humble.

Additionally, when you don’t own up to your mistakes, especially if you have hurt your child, that can do plenty of damage to your parent/child relationship.

Making Your Kids Share Their Things

“Sharing is caring,’ do you remember that saying? But when was the last time you, as an adult, shared something important to you, like a laptop, with someone? Just because they wanted it. Telling our children to share their things just because another child wants them doesn’t benefit either child in any way.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Children who want to share their things should be encouraged to. However, if a child has a toy that is important to them or even new, forcing them to share doesn’t teach them anything.

Forcing a child to share may give a foothold to building resentment. Furthermore, it takes away their ownership. Additionally, forced sharing teaches the other child that they should get something simply because they want it.

Not Considering Age-Appropriate Behavior

Sometimes, it can feel like society is demanding way too much from us as parents. This pressures us to expect more from our children than they can give us. Every child grows at their own pace. It’s also important to consider what is age-appropriate behavior. For example, a two-year-old will be unable to sit still for long periods physically. It’s unreasonable to expect anything of the sort.

Why It’s Not Beneficial

Ignoring age-appropriate behavior and expecting too much from children is not beneficial. Doing so can cause frustration for both parents and the child. Furthermore, ignoring age-appropriate milestones and what is normal behavior may set your child up for failure.

One Last Note

Society can put a ton of pressure on parents. This is one reason all these parenting ‘rules’ stick around for much longer than they should. While this list could be a lot longer, the rules on this list do not serve parents or children much good, so if you would rather forget about them, go for it. After all, they aren’t all that beneficial to families.

7 Family-Friendly Restaurants We’d Love to See Make a Comeback https://www.momswhothink.com/family-friendly-restaurants-wed-love-to-see-make-a-comeback/ https://www.momswhothink.com/family-friendly-restaurants-wed-love-to-see-make-a-comeback/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2025 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=268255&preview=true&preview_id=268255 The post 7 Family-Friendly Restaurants We’d Love to See Make a Comeback appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Taking a family out to a sit-down restaurant can feel anxiety-inducing. This is especially true if you have young children. While you don’t necessarily want to take small kids to a fancy restaurant meant only for adults, some perks come with taking your kids out to eat. They can learn plenty of valuable skills through these moments. These practical skills include proper table etiquette, communication with restaurant staff, and appropriate behavior in public spaces. Of course, the best way to teach your children these skills and more is by taking them to a family-friendly restaurant. These are the restaurants that other kids and families would most likely be at. This means you’re less likely to get glared at here if your child is still learning. But sometimes these places can be hard to find. Here are seven family-friendly restaurants we’d love to see make a comeback.

The restaurants on this list may evoke nostalgia and dreams of being able to take your children to a beloved place from when you were a child. You never know what the future may hold; maybe one day, we will see one of these family-friendly restaurants make an epic comeback.

’90s Pizza Hut Buffet

Technically, Pizza Hut is still in business; however, many people long for the day when it ruled the pizza world. In the ’90s, Pizza Hut was a popular restaurant with plenty of kid-eat-free days.

’90s Pizza Hut Buffet

Additionally, Pizza Hut had both a sit-down section and a buffet. The atmosphere was comforting to families. Whether they were planning a birthday party or taking their kids out for a weekday treat. Pizza Hut in the ’90s was where it was at.

Chi-Chi’s

Chi-Chi’s was a Mexican restaurant that was very popular during the 1980s and 1990s. They quickly became known for their fried ice cream and salsa.

Chi-Chi’s

Chi-Chi’s was an introduction to the whole concept of Tex-Mex cuisine. The immense popularity soon fizzled out when bigger competitors began to grow. Now, there is talk that a new Chi-Chi’s may be up and coming. While it may not be exactly what the old restaurant was, seeing its similarities to the ’80s favorite Chi-Chi’s will be interesting.

Bennigan’s

Bennigan’s was another ’90s restaurant that quickly became popular during this era. Customer favorites included Monte Cristo sandwiches, which were described as a ‘food-coma-inducing deliciousness” by a Reddit commenter.

Bennigan’s

Bennigan’s was first founded in 1972 and had the catchphrase ‘bringing families together.” It was a laid-back restaurant where families could enjoy delicious appetizers and deep-fried everything (have you ever had deep-fried broccoli?) They quickly became popular for their two for one happy hour drinks.

Don Pablo’s

Don Pablo’s was another Tex-Mex restaurant that focused on making meals from scratch, providing fresh ingredients, and creating a relaxing atmosphere in which families felt comfortable.

Don Pablos

Today, the nostalgia for the feeling of Don Pablos is strong. Whether it was going to the restaurant and watching fresh tortillas being made in front of you or hanging out as a family enjoying the relaxing atmosphere, there was always a reason to go to Don Pablos.

Sizzler

Sizzler Rockhampton

In the 1970s, Sizzler was a hopping restaurant that changed the way of typical restaurants with their ingenious salad bar. Families could come and order a full meal at a reasonable price and chill out in a family-friendly space.

Sizzler

bangkok sizzler interior

Other than the salad bar, Sizzler was known for its down-home menu items, such as steak, ribs, and burgers. Family-friendly food was another reason kids and adults felt comfortable here.

Ponderosa

Ponderosa was a family-friendly buffet restaurant that offered amazing deals. These included family days, where families ate for a very low price. They also had kid-eat-free days. These deals made it easier for families with smaller kids to dine out when they didn’t feel like cooking.

Ponderosa

The main reason Ponderosa was so family-friendly was because of the price range. In the ’90s, buffet-style restaurants were extremely popular. This concept allowed customers to pick and choose from a wide range of choices for a reasonable price. Though buffets aren’t nearly as popular anymore, you can still find a Ponderosa lingering around the United States here or there.

Old Country Buffet

The Old Country Buffet was another popular family buffet in the 1990s. It was a top choice for those who wanted a relaxing night out but didn’t want to choose just one specific type of meal. Buffets are handy like that.

Old Country Buffet

Many Redditors in this post share how they used to go there for ‘fancy’ dinners with their family. It was their definition of a ‘nice restaurant.” If a restaurant can evoke nostalgia such as that, it must have done something right.

In Conclusion

Happy family toasting while eating breakfast in a restaurant during their hotel stay.

Finding a family-friendly restaurant isn’t always easy. So many checks need to be marked off to be considered a top restaurant for families. Things like a calm atmosphere, reasonably priced, and kid-friendly meals. However, the family-friendly restaurants on this list are ones we would love to see make a comeback.

10 Foods I Used to Serve My Kids After School That I’ve Now Banished From My House https://www.momswhothink.com/foods-i-used-to-serve-my-kids-after-school-that-ive-now-banished-from-my-house/ https://www.momswhothink.com/foods-i-used-to-serve-my-kids-after-school-that-ive-now-banished-from-my-house/#respond Mon, 03 Mar 2025 20:32:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=267425&preview=true&preview_id=267425 The post 10 Foods I Used to Serve My Kids After School That I’ve Now Banished From My House appeared first on Moms Who Think.

There’s no getting around it; whenever kids come home for school they are ravished. After all, they put in a long day of work. It’s easy to reach for the first processed snack in the cabinets. However, when it comes to our kids’ health, there are many healthier snacks that we could choose from. These unhealthy foods are now banished from my house. Let’s look at what makes them unhealthy and what to choose for your kid’s after-school snack instead.

Fruit Snacks

For a snack with the word fruit in it, you would think health would be a given. Yet, there are both benefits and negatives to grabbing a pack of fruit snacks. The calories are low, and some fruit snacks contain vitamins A and C. However, fruit snacks also contain a ton of sugar and some trans-fat. Additionally, they tend to be loaded with colors and dyes. Which is one reason these unhealthy foods are now banished from my house.

Instead, a better option to give your kids is fresh fruit like apples, bananas, or berries.

Energy Drinks

Energy drinks may make children and adults feel a quick pick me up, but they aren’t great for our health. Many come with health risks that aren’t worth it, especially for children.

Energy drinks can decrease insulin sensitivity and put a person at risk for anxiety, hallucinations, headaches, depression, and more. Additionally, energy drinks may also put one at risk of having a stroke.

If your child is coming home tired from school, make it a priority to ensure they get plenty of rest at night.

Flavored Yogurt

Yogurt can be very healthy, especially yogurts like Kefr and Greek. However, when we get into the territory of flavored yogurt, that’s when the health benefits can start to decrease.

Flavored yogurt tends to be full of sugar. Some tubes of flavored yogurt can contain up to 15 grams or more of added sugar. So, when in doubt, opt for unflavored plain or Greek yogurt.

Goldfish Snacks

Any of the baked processed pantry snacks are far from healthy for children. They are highly processed and full of added preservatives. Goldfish are one of the foods that are now banished.

Goldfish snacks also have too much sodium and minimal nutrients. This and the additives make them better left on the store shelves.

Instead, try giving your child fresh vegetables for that added crunch.

Pop Tarts

Pop-Tarts are another processed breakfast or snack food that is better to say no to. They are highly processed with refined flour and soybean oil and contain too much sugar. This sugar includes refined white sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and corn syrup.

Fructose is known to increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. If your child loves to have a sweet treat after school, try baking homemade banana or zucchini bread. You can control the ingredients in the bread, and you will still get something sweet.

Boxed Macaroni and Cheese

Kids love macaroni and cheese. What’s not to love? It’s easy, convenient, pasta, and cheesy! However, boxed macaroni and cheese have been linked to phthalates, a chemical that makes plastics more flexible.

Furthermore, mac and cheese is also very highly processed. It contains a ton of sodium and a high amount of saturated fat.

Hot Dogs

Hot dogs are also another loved snack and meal for kids. However, consuming them actually comes with health risks. They contain high amounts of sodium that can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Additionally, hot dogs contain nitrates and nitrites. These additives come with the risk of cancer.

Lunchables

Lunchables seemingly make the perfect after-school snack. They contain just the right number of crackers, meat, and cheese and sometimes you can find breakfast lunchables. Some even come with a tasty little treat. Yet, don’t go reaching for one of these just yet.

Since lunchables are highly processed meat, they contain ingredients that can increase the risk of cancer. Furthermore, they are high in sodium and may have heavy metals and phthalates.

Sugary Breakfast Cereals

Sugary breakfast cereals may be addicting for some kids, but the high levels of sugar can be concerning. Too much sugar increases blood pressure, affects insulin, and puts kids at risk for developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes down the line.

So, if your kid is a huge fan of sugar, try opting for a healthier brand.

Potato Chips

Potato chips are addicting and sometimes oh-so-tasty. But they also come with risks, especially when consumed in high amounts. If anyone has eaten potato chips, you know it’s hard to eat a few!

Potato chips have high sodium levels and little to no nutritional value. Additionally, they are fried, which means they contain high levels of unhealthy fats, like saturated and trans fats.

One Last Note

a boy's choice of a healthy or unhealthy snack

Finding the perfect snack isn’t always easy. Kids can be picky and sometimes, the healthiest foods are more expensive. While junk food isn’t always terrible in moderation, it’s important not to let your kids eat unhealthy levels of processed food daily. The risk these foods come with are why they are now banished. Instead, make sure to add in some healthier choices. Before you know it, your kids may be reaching for the cottage cheese or the apple instead of the goldfish or potato chips.

Playdates. Some parents love them; others dread them. While playdates have been a massive part of society over the last several decades, more and more parents are choosing not to partake in playdates. This doesn’t mean they don’t get together with other adults and host a playdate where both parents are. Instead, parents choose to say no to unsupervised playdates where children are dropped off and later picked up by them. Let’s explore why parents say no and the questions you should ask before considering an unsupervised playdate.

Child Left Unsupervised

Two Young Girls Using Laptop At Home And Whispering

The number one concern for parents regarding playdates is their child being left unsupervised. With a lack of supervision, children are more susceptible to coming across something they shouldn’t, engaging in unsafe behavior, or being exposed to inappropriate behavior or content.

Whether or not parents let their child go to an unsupervised playdate is a personal choice and is determined by several factors. These include how close they are with the family, level of trust, and how old the child is. However, like anything, there will always be some level of concern. Here are the top concerns of parents who have decided to say no to unsupervised playdates.

Inappropriate Language

The number one concern of parents is the exposure to certain risks. Since you don’t know what is happening in another person’s home, there’s always the chance a child will be exposed to things that will make you and them uncomfortable.

One of these concerns is exposure to inappropriate language. This includes crude or sexual language or cursing.

Exposure to Inappropriate Content/Conversations

To go along with inappropriate language is the potential exposure to inappropriate content or conversations.

Sometimes, adults talk openly in front of children, even about topics that aren’t for their ears. Additionally, the home may not have the same content rules as you or be tightly monitored. There’s a chance your child will be exposed to content that is violent or inappropriate.

Injury Risk

A child climbs on a closet, there are dangers in the house with the risk of injury. Kid aged two (two year old)

Kids are risk-takers. If a child is left unsupervised during this playdate, there’s a higher risk of injury. This concerns parents because they don’t know what their child is doing or what is readily available for them to get into.

Before you say that’s just helicopter parenting, many concerns stem from not knowing whether or not the adult in charge will be attentive and mindful.

Cyberbullying/Online Safety Concerns

Portrait of teenage girl looking at her smartphone, sad, anxious, alone. Cyberbullying, girl is harassed, threated online.

Even supervised children may find a way to do something they shouldn’t. Many parents are concerned with cyberbullying or the ability to get online in an unsafe way. If online activity isn’t monitored tightly for children, they can quickly become exposed to something they shouldn’t be or even become susceptible to a predator.

Not Knowing Who is Coming and Going

Two pre-teen male friends sit talking in kitchen at one boyÕs house, dad in the background

Sure, you may know the family, but who is coming and going from their house? Do their kids have any older friends? Are uncles, aunts, and grandparents coming and going? Sure, not every adult is an unsafe person. But there are unsafe people out there.

Studies show that abuse is more commonly done by someone the child knows and trusts. Parents must stay diligent when determining where a child can be unsupervised. If that makes you a helicopter parent, then that’s okay. Your job is to protect your child.

Child Not Having Conflict Resolution Skills

two sisters fight over a toy bunny

The younger the child is, the less likely they are to have conflict resolution skills. Furthermore, it often depends on the child’s personality and temperament. Some children are more readily able to say no to a situation or be able to remove themselves. Others may go along with the crowd because they don’t want to cause a fuss.

This can put a child in a tricky position because they may not know how to stop or report events like bullying, inappropriate or unsafe behavior, or peer pressure.

Access to Medications and Harmful Substances

Children's hands with medicines on a wooden table. A small child left unattended plays dangerous drugs.

Another main concern of parents when it comes to unsupervised playdates is what kind of access their children will have. We touched on the access to inappropriate content, but another concern is access to medications and harmful substances.

There’s no way of really knowing if a family has medications put away safely or if they have harmful substances lying around. If your child comes across it, is curious, or even pressured to take it, they could be badly hurt or worse.

Unsecured Guns/Guns in the House in General

Human hand opening a metal safe with a gun inside, studio cropped shot in black and white

Guns can be a hot topic, but either way, if you own a gun, it should always be safely locked up, especially when children are around. All it takes is a couple of seconds for a young child to get a hold of one that wasn’t securely locked up to change their life and your life forever.

Unpredictable Animals

Dogs and cats can make great pets. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t unpredictable. If a dog is scared or nervous around a new child, it could lash out and hurt your child. It’s always best to be safe.

Food Allergies and Specific Dietary Requirements

Many children have food allergies or specific dietary requirements. Sure, you can let the parents know, but that doesn’t always mean they will remember, take it seriously, or pay attention to the ingredients in a snack.

Furthermore, not every child will be able to remember ‘oh hey, I have a food allergy.” It makes sense that parents would be worried about their child accidentally eating something that could cause a terrible reaction. You can prepare for this by packing your child’s snacks and explaining why to the parents.

What to Ask Before a Playdate

Sometimes, when our children are invited to a playdate, a tiny sliver of panic may shoot through us. This is especially true if you don’t know the family well. Furthermore, asking questions may feel intimidating because we don’t want to offend anyone. Yet, it’s better to ask and prepare so you have all the information you can before making a decision. Here are several questions you should ask before letting your child go on a playdate:

  • Is there a pool where you are going to be? Is it easily accessible?
  • Is there a trampoline?
  • Do you have screen time and media rules/restrictions?
  • Do you have pets? How are they with children?
  • Are there any guns in your home?
  • Who will be watching the kids?
  • What activities will they be doing?
  • Discuss any allergies or food restrictions for both families.

How to Decline Politely

Young Woman Discussing Problems With Counselor

If you have gotten an invitation to an unsupervised playdate and decided you want to decline politely, here are a couple of ways to do so:

  • Say thank you, but your child isn’t available that day.
  • Be sure to extend gratitude.
  • Be honest and explain (if you want.)
  • Ask to get together at a public place instead, like the park.
  • Explain that you don’t want to miss out on much-needed family time.

Playdates can be a great way for kids to get together. Yet, the safety of your child comes first. That means being concerned with where they are going and who will be there regularly as a parent. Safety should always come first, and instead of feeling pressure to send your child to an unsupervised playdate, offer to meet up somewhere with the kids. After all, parents need friends too.

14 Ways You’re Making Yourself Appear Older Than You Are & How to Fix Them https://www.momswhothink.com/ways-youre-making-yourself-appear-older-than-you-are-how-to-fix-them/ https://www.momswhothink.com/ways-youre-making-yourself-appear-older-than-you-are-how-to-fix-them/#respond Fri, 28 Feb 2025 20:25:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=267361&preview=true&preview_id=267361 The post 14 Ways You’re Making Yourself Appear Older Than You Are & How to Fix Them appeared first on Moms Who Think.

There’s no getting around it; we all age. However, some people seemingly age faster than others. Have you ever been around someone who may be in their 40s or 50s but still looks like they are in their early 30s? What is it that they are doing to look so young? How we age and, more specifically, what age we look is not linear. Numerous factors go into it. However, there may be ways you’re making yourself appear older than you are. Here are 14 ways you may be doing this and how to fix them.

What Determines How Old We Look?

Happy 50s middle aged woman model touching face skin looking in mirror reflection. Smiling mature old lady pampering, healthy moisturized skin care, aging beauty, skincare treatment cosmetics concept.

The age we look will vary depending on each person. Genetics, stress, collagen loss, and lifestyle choices are all contributing factors.

We can’t do a whole lot about genetics. Lifestyle choices, on the other hand, we can change those. This means we can also potentially fix appearing older than we are. So, if you are tired of looking older than your actual age, take a look at these everyday habits that affect our appearance. Here are 14 ways you are making yourself appear older than you are.

Wearing Frumpy Clothes/Clothes That Don’t Fit

Sometimes, we age ourselves with the clothing we choose to wear. Frumpy is defined as ‘drab, old-fashioned, and unattractive.” Does this mean you have to be up to date with the latest trends? No. However, there have been studies behind the idea of ” if you look good, you feel good.”

Wearing clothes that don’t fit or are considered ‘frumpy’ may age you. So, instead, look at your closet and then spend a couple of minutes finding an outfit or two that sparks joy. You just may find yourself feeling and looking like your young self.

Not Wearing the Right Color Foundation

Decorative plaster podiums, bottle of makeup foundation and tulip flower on grey background

One way you’re making yourself appear older than you are, has to do with the foundation you choose. Finding the proper color foundation can be tricky. There are so many options, but which foundation you use is very important. If you choose too dark, your makeup may appear caked, aging you a bit.

However, if your foundation is too light, you could appear washed out. The best way to find the proper foundation is to figure out your undertone.

Not Knowing Your Skin Undertone

There is your skin tone, and then there is your skin undertone. Most everyone knows what type of skin tone they have. However, the skin undertone can be trickier to figure out. Our undertone is the color underneath our skin. There are three types: cool, warm, and neutral. A cool undertone has pink and blue tones, while a warm one has yellow or golden tones.

Finding Your Skin Undertone

young beautiful woman applied concealer under the eyes

From finding the perfect shade of foundation to choosing your next hair color, knowing your undertone can help you feel more confident. It does this by finding styles to complement your natural beauty. One of the easiest ways to find your undertone is to look at the veins inside your wrist. If they are blue and purple, you have a cool undertone. Whereas, if they are greenish, then it’s a warm undertone. A neutral undertone has a mixture of both.

Constant Stress

If you feel under constant stress; then you may be aging yourself. Stress can cause skin damage by breaking down collagen and causing skin inflammation.

Some stress is a normal part of life. But if you feel like you are chronically stressed, you can take steps to reduce it, the Mayo Clinic offers several tips here.

Lack of Sleep

Also, when we are stressed, we usually lack sleep. This can cause us to appear older than we are by reducing our skin elasticity and causing uneven pigmentation.

Furthermore, sleep-deprived can also pack on the wrinkles and bags under our eyes.

Prioritize sleep by ensuring you get at least eight hours a night. Turn off the electronics a few hours before bedtime to help prepare your body for the rest.

Wearing Dark Colors

You may be putting your appearance at a disadvantage if you only wear dark colors like black or grey. Dark colors age us because of the contrast with skin tone.

Additionally, dark colors also accentuate features like wrinkles and under-eye shadows. Instead of constantly wearing black and grey, try adding warm colors, soft neutrals, or something that complements your undertones.

Not Taking Time for Self-Care

Self-care is one of those things that gets pushed to the back of our priority list often. We are so busy today, on the go, working all the time, we forget to prioritize self-care.

However, it will begin to show if you neglect exercising, eating healthy whole foods, and getting enough rest. So, take at least 15 minutes a day to move your body and pay attention to what you are putting in it. You may start to feel and look younger.

Caking on Your Foundation

a young housewife with curlers and with wrong liquid foundation on her face

Caking on foundation and not blending it in can make you appear older for several reasons. The foundation can set into fine lines, making them pop even more. Additionally, if your foundation is cakey, it is uneven and thick.

To avoid caking on your foundation, take a few minutes to learn blending techniques and the proper way to apply foundation. These skills can help you feel more confident when you apply makeup.

Having Poor Posture

Close up portrait of man looking and using smart phone with scoliosis, side view, isolated on gray background. Rachiocampsis, kyphosis curvature of neck, Incorrect posture, , orthopedics concept

Having poor posture can give you a hunched appearance. The slouching can also add more premature wrinkling and sagging to your skin.

If you find yourself struggling with poor posture, try one or more of these tips to correct it:

  • Become more aware of your posture every day
  • Exercise your core and back muscles
  • Try to keep your head aligned over your shoulders with your shoulders back
  • Stretch every day
  • See a professional for any back pain
  • Try a posture corrector

Not Drinking Enough Water

Not drinking enough water may kick up the aging process. It affects our organs, including our skin. Lack of hydration can also increase the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Our body will pull water from our skin, leading it to lose that youthfulness and elasticity.

So be sure to get the recommended amount of water daily. Doing so can also help with the bags under your eyes.

Grey/Uncolored Hair

Premature gray hair problem, stressed asian young woman with hair loss, thyroid or autoimmune disorders, alopecia areata, deficiency of vitamins, concerned about graying hair, health care, medical concept

Sporting your natural gray hair is an option that many more people are choosing to do. Natural is beautiful. However, there is a difference between a 50-year-old person with gray hair and a 20-year-old person. Gray hair can appear at any age, even as a teenager!

So, if you aren’t ready to sport your natural greys and whites, book an appointment with your hair salon to color your hair. You can also use a boxed color to be frugal.

Not Moisturizing Your Skin

Washing your face is an important skill to learn as a young person. However, moisturizing your skin is also equally important. This will help keep your skin hydrated and smooth and reduce skin irritations.

If you haven’t started a good routine yet, moisturize your face at least twice daily.

You Are a Smoker

Smoking breaks down your collagen and elasticity in the skin. It also reduces blood flow to your vessels and blocks nutrients and oxygen from your skin.

Therefore, if you are a smoker, try to quit. Reducing premature aging isn’t the only benefit that would come with this lifestyle change.

One Last Note

We can’t always control how we age. After all, genetics plays a huge part in it. However, our lifestyle choices sometimes make us appear older than we are. Changing diet, activity level, and even how you dress can help you when you’re making yourself appear older than you are, or at the very least, your age.

If you were to ask anyone what the most popular fast-food restaurant was, their answer would most likely be McDonald’s. According to Statista, there are currently 41,822 McDonald’s worldwide. You can find one in almost every town in the United States and over 100 countries. What is it about this restaurant that gives it so much addicting power? Beyond the kid favorite chicken nuggets and their juicy McChicken sandwiches, one menu item stands out above the rest. The oh-so-delicious and salty fries. So, what sets this restaurant’s fries apart from the rest? We are going to take a look at why McDonald’s sells the saltiest fries, and it’s for this one main reason.

History of McDonald’s as a Franchise

Picture the most popular fast-food restaurant today; what comes to mind? Hamburgers, fries, self-service, right? What about barbeque stands and hot dogs? Those seem a little out of place for this franchise. However, every story has a beginning, and the beginning of the story of McDonald’s starts with a hot dog stand and two brothers named Maurice and Richard McDonald.

Maurice and Richard McDonald

These brothers entered the food industry by starting a hotdog stand in 1937. Then, a few years later, in 1940, they bought an old drive-through barbeque restaurant in San Bernardino, California, and opened up McDonald’s. However, the originally name was McDonald’s Famous Barbeque, and the menu was focused on, you guessed it, barbeque. To step up the competition, the brothers used high-powered heat lamps to keep prepared food warm and a system called the Speedee Service System. They also used a self-service counter. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

In Walks Ray Kroc

Kroc sold kitchen appliances to the McDonald brothers and was immediately impressed by their designs and innovative spirit. He bought the rights to franchise the McDonald’s restaurant and make it what it is today. By the 1960s, the brothers were ultimately bought out, and Kroc owned the restaurant.

McDonald’s Global Influence

McDonald’s is undeniably the most popular fast-food restaurant in the world. With restaurants in over 100 countries worldwide, McDonald’s would have a massive global influence.

They take their responsibility seriously. Valuing sustainability by getting involved in social issues and the environment as well. Priorities include food safety, sourcing responsibility, and animal welfare. Additionally, environmental issues that McDonald’s feels strongly about include climate action, protecting natural resources, and waste.

Ronald McDonald’s House Charities

McDonald’s also has a nonprofit organization called the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which gives families a place to stay or help while their children are in the hospital.

Why are Their Fries Iconic?

Have you ever heard someone say, well, I like this restaurant’s chicken nuggets (or fill in the blank), but McDonald’s fries are the best? There’s a reason their fries are so iconic.

These reasons include the carefully selected potatoes and the double frying process. This process uses lower heat to cook the fries thoroughly, then a higher heat to make them extra crispy. Which is one reason It is hard to eat only a few of these addicting fries.

Why are McDonald’s Fries so Salty?

Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty: why exactly are McDonald’s fries so addictingly salty? Do they toss a ton of salt on there and call it a day? Not quite. McDonald’s sells the saltiest fries for this one main reason.

The Number One Reason McDonald’s Fries are So Salty

glass salt shaker on gray table and white background for text

The main reason that McDonald’s fries are so salty has to do with what is called the ‘bliss point.’ It’s not just salt that gives us the addicting flavor. It’s a combination of salt, sugar, and fat. The fries are cooked in canola oil laced with a natural flavoring similar to beef tallow. Then, the fries are salted and coated with dextrose (sugar.) All three combined add a perfect mouthwatering flavor.

Why are the Fries so Addicting?

What happens when these flavors are combined explains a little about why these fries are addicting. The dopamine in your brain actually sends a message of pleasure when eating these fries. That is why it is so hard for you to eat only a few fries!

Brand Consistency

McDonald’s has always been a restaurant that doesn’t change just to change. Through the years, they have stayed consistently the same. Which is one reason they remain so popular and continue to grow. McDonald’s firmly believes that staying consistent helps build trust, awareness, and reliability. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

Fry Preparations Through the Years

French Fries

Though they have stayed largely consistent through the years, things don’t always remain the same. Like anything that has been around for a while, there have been some changes with McDonald’s fries.

At the Beginning

Creamy Homemade beef tallow glass , close-up

Anyone before 1990 probably claims that McDonald’s fries were better than they are now. Why exactly? The reason is because from the beginning until 1990, McDonald’s used beef tallow to cook their fries. Originally, this is where the flavor of the McDonald’s fries came from.

Yet, in 1990, they switched to canola oil due to health considerations.

Fry Preparation Now

Cooking delicious french fries in hot oil, closeup

Today, McDonald’s cooks their fries in a mixture of vegetable oils. These include soybean and canola oils. However, when the change happened, customers weren’t happy with the flavor difference. So, McDonald’s improvised and now adds beef flavoring which tastes very similar to beef tallow.

In Conclusion

Now that you know why McDonald’s sells the saltiest fries, it makes sense why customers rave about them so much. The flavoring adds a complex taste that is hard to find at any other restaurant. When you reach into the bag and grab a handful of hot, salty McDonald’s French fries, it’s almost like you’re in heaven. At least for some. While they aren’t everyone’s bag of chips, (or fries, should we say), not many people can deny that the salty McDonald’s fries are oh-so addicting.

14 Parenting Myths That Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good https://www.momswhothink.com/parenting-myths-that-might-be-doing-more-harm-than-good/ https://www.momswhothink.com/parenting-myths-that-might-be-doing-more-harm-than-good/#respond Wed, 26 Feb 2025 20:26:11 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=267355&preview=true&preview_id=267355 The post 14 Parenting Myths That Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Do you remember reading “The Little House on the Prairie” books? In one of the books, Laura mentions that a common rule during her time was “children should be seen but not heard.” Children today may have a hard time fathoming this social rule. However, we can see from history that through the decades, parenting styles and ideas have come and gone. Yet, some parenting myths have way more staying power than they should. This article will explore common parenting myths that may cause more harm than good.

14 Parenting Myths That Could be Harmful

Just a quick look at history shows that parenting has changed in several ways throughout generations, even from decade to decade. These ways include parenting goals, access to information, and parental involvement. However, so many parenting myths continue to make their way from generation to generation, even though these myths may actually be more harmful than good. Let’s take a look at several common ones that continue to live on.

Parenting Comes Naturally

Loving mum stroking her frustrated pre-teen daughter, give emotional support, feeling empathy, give advice, having good trustful relationship between teenager and parent. Adolescence problems, care

If a young mom feels nervous about parenting their child, they may be met with well-meaning advice. “Oh, don’t worry, parenting comes naturally” may just be spoken by your well-meaning elderly neighbor. But just because it’s a common saying doesn’t make it true. Some parents are natural; others simply aren’t.

This myth can lead to parents feeling like failures and putting unrealistic expectations on themselves. Parenting is actually a learned skill that may take time and effort for some.

Vaccines Cause Autism

One myth that keeps popping up even after being debunked is that vaccines cause autism. Childhood vaccinations were developed to protect against several potentially deadly diseases. Autism, on the other hand, is connected to the brain development of a person and genetics.

This myth came to life when a 1998 study made this suggestion. However, since then, the person who wrote this study had their medical license revoked, and the study was retracted. During the time after, several studies have debunked this myth.

Giving Children Respect Makes Them Spoiled and Selfish

How dangerous is chroming?

Children are people deserving of respect just like any adult. There is a misconception that children should respect all adults but are not deserving of the same respect. We can see this in examples of children being expected to give hugs and kisses to those who make them uncomfortable.

Additionally, the idea that children should respect all adults could put them in a dangerous situation that may lead to an adult hurting them. A child is not spoiled or selfish if you give them respect and autonomy. Instead, it will teach a child that their mind and intuition are important.

Furthermore, we should teach our children how to spot safe adults and that they themselves deserve respect.

Kids Are Born Resilient

Family Conflicts. Sad little black children covering ears with hands while their parents arguing in the background, upset boy and girl don't want to hear quarrel, stressed kid sitting on the floor

‘Oh, kids are resilient.” have you ever heard this? This myth simply isn’t true. Sure, kids can become resilient when they have a strong support system in place. However, when exposed to adverse childhood experiences it can actually cause great harm, not resilience.

These stresses and trauma can affect a child in several ways. They may be more likely to participate in harmful activities like unsafe sex or drug use. If you have never heard of ACEs and how they affect a person’s future, read more about them here.

Children Always Come First

Depressed upset woman feeling hurt sad stressed troubled with problem

This is a well-meaning myth. Yet, it can be harmful to parents who actually believe this. Your child’s needs should always be at the forefront of your mind. However, you can’t neglect yourself and compromise your health in the name of parenting. Being the best parent you can mean you need to care for your own physical and mental health.

The Twos Are Terrible

Oh, the terrible twos. While it’s meant to encourage parents, this myth can give a mindset that is not helpful. During the twos, toddlers’ minds are taking in so much information. Just think about where your toddler was even just a year before. However, through these twos, toddlers are learning independence and communication.

This means that tantrums are simply a normal part of development. Is this time challenging for parents? Yes. However, this time is also difficult for your fast-growing toddler who is learning so much about their world.

Giving Your Kids Medication Makes You a Lazy Parent

child surrounded by books and notebooks frustrated, with the acronym ADHD, represents the disease Attention Deficit Disorder and the difficulties it entails in school life.

Sometimes, parents are hesitant to give their children the necessary medication for disorders like anxiety, depression, or ADHD because they believe the lie that doing so makes them lazy parents. However, these disorders and more are more common in children than people would like to believe.

If your child needs medication to help them in life, then why knowingly deny it from them? Disorders like anxiety in teens is common, but it is also treatable in a number of ways.

Sugar Equals Hyperactivity

Child and traditional Ramadan candies. Colorful sweet and baby girl. Eid Mubarak. Kid hold plate full of sugar during Ramadan kareem (Turkish: Ramazan Bayrami).

This common belief has been debunked several times. Sugar doesn’t equal hyperactivity. However, consuming too much sugar can still have adverse health effects, so it’s still a good idea to eat it in moderation.

There’s Only One Right Way to Parent

mom accompanies her first-grader daughter to school, kissing her and hugging her, back to school, the parent gives the child to the first grade. Mom meets a student from school.

This myth can be harmful to both children and parents. There is no right way to be the perfect parent and many ways to be a good parent. Experience, grace, and time will help you find what works for your family. If we buy into the lie that there’s only one way to parent, we put immense pressure on ourselves, which can affect not only our parenting but also our families. But the truth is, every family is different, and every child is different.

You Are Spoiling Your Baby if You…

Smiling happy young mother 24-26 year old holding baby girl over lake and nature background. Autumn season. Motherhood.

Hold them too much. Pick them up when they cry. Respond right away. Give them too much love and attention. Young infants are not developmentally able to understand cause and effect. You can’t spoil your baby if you hold them, pick them up, and respond immediately. Besides, time goes by too fast. Hold the baby. Love and affection have the opposite effect; they show children they are valued and build self-esteem.

Strict Parenting Equals Well-Behaved Children

Strict- parenting doesn’t create well-behaved children. It is possible to be firm but loving, consistent but warm. When a child grows up with authoritarian parents, they are more likely to rebel. Additionally, they may feel ignored and degraded.

Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child

Violence against children. Father scolds and threaten her child girl. family relationships. Discipline, yelling, spanking concept.

This actually dates back to a Proverb found in the Bible. Interpretations of this verse lead some parents to believe it means spanking or harsh punishment. However, discipline doesn’t necessarily mean punishment.

The AAP actually advises parents to refrain from spanking or physical punishment because it can cause more harm. It can lead to an increase in low self-esteem, mental health disorders, and aggression.

Fear is Just a Stage

While some fear is normal childhood development, not all fear is just a stage. Anxiety in children is actually a very real concern and should never just be dismissed. Dismissal of this fear may lead a child to grow more anxious. It’s our responsibility as parents to help children tackle any fears they may have with coping mechanisms, support, and possibly even consulting a health professional.

Children Need to Clear Their Plates

Unhappy little boy child sit at table at home kitchen have no appetite for healthy breakfast. Upset kid refuse to eat cereals with milk. Adorable sad tired kid eating low fat soy milk in bowl cereal.

Have you ever heard “there’s starving children in Africa, clear your plate.” This mentality can cause children to learn to ignore their internal voice of being full, develop an unhealthy relationship with food, and gain weight.

The 1980s is one of those decades that seemingly never grows old. Everyone who experienced it loves to look back on this time of teased hair and bright neon styles with fondness. Even those who had never lived in the decade immediately recognized this time for what it was. It was a moment when creativity was in full swing, and pop culture was on fire with classic movies, video stores, and the first arcade games. Another reason people are hung up on the 1980s is because of the iconic fashion trends. Let’s look at these ’80s children’s fashions that make us nostalgic.

From chunky heart bracelets to bright neon shoelaces, the 1980s was full of eye-catching and fun fashion for kids. Colorful and significant were the staples of ’80s children’s fashion, with fun trends like jellies and tracksuits thrown in there as well. Let’s look back and explore some of the best ’80s children’s fashion trends that make us want to travel back in time.

Fashion Trends Over the Years

Fashion changes all the time. As soon as you get on board with trends, you turn around, and something new pops up.

In the 1920s, dropped-waist dresses and flappers were popular. Fast forward 30 years to the 1950s, when women wore pencil skirts and big hats. Today, athleisure and bomber jackets are all on trend. Although what is popular in fashion come and go, there are so many iconic fashion trends that we simply can’t get enough of. Since the 1980s, there have been certain trends that keep coming back.

What was Popular in the 1980s

Looking back at the 1980s, we can all agree that the incredibly bright and over-the-top fashion was one thing this decade had going for it. For some reason, many of these trends have staying power and are constantly trying to make a comeback.

Looking back at photos and videos filled with 1980s children’s fashion can invoke nostalgia you have never felt before, even if you didn’t grow up in this decade. In the 1980s, society loved big, teased hair, mullets, leather jackets, bright colors, and those high-waisted jeans. Kids could be seen running the streets with their jelly shoes, oversized tops, and leg warmers. Picture Stephanie Tanner playing in her backyard with her sisters. That’s 1980s nostalgia.

80s’s Children’s Fashion That is Making Us Nostalgic

Now we will look back in time at the top ’80s children’s fashion. These trends take us back to a period of bold trends, punk rock, and disco. But be warned, walking down memory lane may have you rushing to your attic to grab those tights and leg warmers so you can jam out to Madonna radio one more time.

Neon Colors

One of the trademark styles that sets the 1980s fashion apart from other decades are the bright neon colors. Neon is the symbol of the 1980s. Kids could be seen donning those bright t-shirts, leg warmers, and accessories. The brighter the pinks, oranges, greens, and blues were, the better.

Shoulder Pads

Fashion Apparel Womenswear Black Blazer with Quartz Back

Shoulder pads are one of the most significant trademarks of the ’80s. They symbolized authority for women, especially as they joined the workforce, but it didn’t stop there. Children also loved sporting these power symbols.

Red Leather Jackets

During this decade, the music icon Michael Jackson began a trend. This trend was the reemergence of the red leather jacket. Initially, the jackets were simultaneous with rebellion in the 1950s, thanks to James Dean and Marlon Brando. However, in the 1980s, children of all ages began wearing these power symbols after Michael Jackson made it popular yet again.

Jelly Shoes

Jelly shoes, remember those? The colorful plastic shoes that rubbed your feet raw? They quickly became popular in the ’80s for several reasons. First, they were pretty inexpensive. They could also match other jelly accessories to create a fun and trendy outfit for girls and women. Not to mention, the options felt endless!

Tracksuits

Throwback fashion. Stylish boys and girl wearing typical 90s outfits, tracksuits and accessories, posing outdoors. Vintage athletic wear. Concept of 90s, fashion, youth culture, old-style trends

Is it even the ’80s if tracksuits aren’t involved? They were comfortable enough to wear daily and quickly became part of hip-hop culture.

Neon Shoelaces

Let’s take a trip back to bright colors. To complete any colorful outfit, you, of course, needed the brightly colored neon shoelaces.

White Washed jeans

Baby boy blue jeans hanging on a clothesline on blue wooden background

Jeans were extremely popular in the ’80s. The high waist was one trend. Another popular trend was white-washed jeans; if they were high-waisted, white-washed jeans were even better.

Polo Shirts

Portrait of a boy smiling and holding game controller while sitting on floor with a retro video game displayed on TV in background

Sure, people still wear polo shirts. However, during this decade, you couldn’t walk down the hallways of the school without seeing children wearing polo shirts of all kinds. Solid polos and stripped polos were the most popular type of shirt worn. This is mainly because this style was considered dressy casual.

Leg Warmers

Leg warmers were commonly worn in the 1980s. Infact, bright neon leg warmers over tights, paired with a leotard, probably conjure up images of workout DVDs. But you didn’t have to be working out to wear these fun, fashionable items.

Goody Hair Barrettes

Colorful hair barrettes clips on white background

Goody still makes fun and cute hair barrettes for kids. However, in the ’80s, almost every little girl seemed to wear these. They were a fun and trendy accessory. It helped that there was such a wide range of options; girls could pick and choose a new one every day to match their outfits.

Oversized Tops

Another fashion trend from the ’80s included the oversized tops. These t-shirts and sweatshirts were often worn over leotards or with high-waisted jeans. It would be even better if these oversized shirts were bright neon colors.

Bomber Jackets

Kids loved their bomber jackets, whether inspired by Tom Cruise in Top Gun or Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones. This style was inspired by the military and made its way to becoming a cultural symbol of rebellion.

Plastic Bracelets

Bulky, plastic, and neon bracelets were popular among young kids during the 1980s. They made the perfect accessory to go along with the colorful neon outfits worn every day.

Velvet Party Dresses

Did your parents ever dress you up in the velvet party dress? These dresses were the perfect fancy outfit to wear while celebrating any holiday. Maybe the kids didn’t always like them, but at least the parents could get adorable photos.

Jumpers

Beautiful children's wool knitted baby and kids sweater with an ornament on a collar with a long sleeve, a pre look, layout, ghost mannequin, isolated on a white

Jumpers are a fashion trend that is making a comeback in 2025. In the ’80s, this fashion choice was popular for many reasons. Jumpers (or sweaters) came in many different styles and colors. They could also be paired easily with dresses and jeans, making them versatile.

Starter Jackets

Starter Jackets were a status symbol in the ’80s. If a child wore one, they were most likely associated with being an athlete. These jackets also allowed one to support their team, and many people called them the ‘members only cool kid’ jackets.

Pedal Pushers

Pedal pushers, or capris, were a comfortable style choice that kids and adults loved. This pants style was very versatile and allowed modesty while still being trendy. An interesting fact is that pedal pushers were initially named because of their ability to be worn without the pant leg getting caught in the chains of a bicycle.

One Last Note

The 1980s have plenty of staying power, with trends constantly trying to make a comeback. During this time, pop culture thrived; MTV became popular, and fashion set trends people never wanted to let go of. Those who grew up in the 1980s may fondly look back on this era. Some people love the incredible influence this decade has had on our society. Regardless, these ’80s children’s fashions are making us nostalgic.

First jobs are a steppingstone no matter what decade you were born in. Many skills can be learned whether you get your first job at 13 or 19 or even after. Most jobs are typically a way for young people to earn extra cash, learn about the workforce, and build skills and experience. When a person gets their first job, they will learn how to communicate, manage their time, work hard, and much more. Generation through generation, jobs have changed; what was deemed necessary 50 years ago may not be as popular today. Furthermore, available jobs now weren’t necessarily available 50 years ago. In this article, we will look at Boomers’ first jobs vs. Gen Z’s first jobs.

Who are Boomers?

The Boomers’, or the Baby Boomers‘, are the generation of people born between 1946 and 1964. They received their generational name because they were all conceived after World War II. This results in a significant boom in the number of babies being born.

Today, the Boomers are between the ages of 61 and 79. Throughout their upbringing, they experienced a time of economic flourishing and are often described as having a strong work ethic and influential as you can see based on Boomers’ first jobs. This is because they had a hand in influencing social change.

Who is Gen Z?

A young and attractive Chinese Asian woman browses the shelves at a store for clothing to buy. The millennial teenager is wearing trendy street clothes and is smiling as she looks through the store.

Gen Z is the population born between 1997 and 2012. This means that they are between the ages of 13 and 28. Gen Z is growing up in the age of technology. This has led most of them to be very tech-savvy. Additionally, many from this generation aren’t scared to take risks, leading them to entrepreneurship.

Gen Z values self-expression, inclusion, and collaboration. All these skills have come in handy as this newest generation enters the workforce.

What are the Other Generational Names?

If you are unfamiliar with generational names or want a refresher, here is the breakdown:

  • The Greatest Generation (1901-1927)
  • Silent Generation ( 1928-1945)
  • Baby Boomers ( 1946-1964)
  • Generation X (965-1980)
  • Millennial Generation ( 1981-1996)
  • Generation Z (-2012)
  • Gen Alpha (2013-2024)

Boomers’ First Jobs vs. Gen Z’s First Jobs

Throughout the years, first jobs have been a rite of passage. While some may have changed over the decades, the purpose remains the same. To introduce the concept of working, the importance of managing time, communication, and many more positive skills.

Boomers’ have always been described as hard-working. They grew up during a time of economic prosperity.

Gen Z is the newest generation to enter the workforce. As the numbers roll in, more and more Gen Z teens are choosing to work, more so than the generations before them.

Look at Boomers’ first jobs versus Gen Zer’s’ first jobs.

Boomer: Newspaper Boy

Being a newspaper boy was a typical first job for young children and teens. Every morning, these kids receive their bundle of newspapers early in the morning. They would take their papers on a set route, utilizing their bikes to help make the route faster.

Starting young helped instill a sense of hard work in these children.

Gen Z: Cashiers

Today, many Gen Zers choose to work at a local grocery or retail store. Often, their first job includes working at the cash register.

Boomer: Candy Striper

While this job didn’t pay, many teenage girls would volunteer their time to become Candy Stripes during this period. A Candy Striper volunteered at a hospital to help care for patients, grab documents, and clean up.

The name Candy Striper came from their uniform, which was a red and white striped dress. These dresses looked a lot like candy canes.

Gen Z: Customer Support

As work-from-home jobs become available, customer support has become increasingly popular. While this isn’t a job for a young teen, young adults entering the workforce may choose this occupation as an entry-level job.

Not all customer service positions are work from home, but many are. Their responsibilities include asking questions from customers, resolving complaints, and setting appointments.

Boomer: Soda Jerk

A soda jerk was popular between the 1920s and 1950s. This occupation began to disappear in the later decade, although they could still be found in the 1960s.

A soda jerk’s primary responsibility was prepping the sodas and ice cream for customers.

Gen Z: Fast Food

Fast food is often the first choice for young teens entering the workforce. These positions include taking orders, preparing the food, and cleaning the restaurant.

Boomer: Yard Work

One everyday job for young kids and teens included yard work. While many helped their parents in their yards, it didn’t stop there. It wasn’t uncommon for a boomer to go from door to door and ask people in the neighborhood if they could take care of their yard.

Tasks included mowing the lawn, trimming bushes, gathering leaves, and more.

Gen Z: Waiters/Waitresses

Another first job choice that has always remained popular is waiter or waitress. The waitstaff is often the first people that customers see. They take their table orders, bring their food, and are the ones who will resolve any issues that come up.

Boomer: Grocery Store Baggers

Another popular first job for Boomers’ that is still popular today includes bagging groceries. This job allowed young teens to learn social skills and how to talk to customers. Additionally, the work ethic gained during this job helps prepare the way for future positions.

Gen Z: Content Creator

Gen Z is considered the technological generation because they are the first generation to grow primarily with technology. They are tech-savvy because they have seen how quickly things change.

Content creators are precisely what it sounds like. They create content for those on the internet to consume. These include videos, audio, articles, or blog posts.

This is an excellent first job for Gen Zers because the social media landscape is constantly changing. Gen Zers are adaptable and attuned to the diverse way content can be distributed. Not to mention, content creation has no ceiling for how much income is possible. There is a wide range of possibilities, with top content creators making millions.

Boomer: Babysitters

For young girls, a typical first job was often babysitting. It wasn’t abnormal for older sisters to care for their siblings while their parents were away. This job often extended to the neighbors and family members.

Babysitting is still a common first job for many teenagers today.

Gen Z: Retail Associates

Working in retail is still a popular choice for those looking for a first job. Typically, this job includes working in sales in some form. Responsibilities may include stocking shelves, pricing products, maintaining the stores, and interacting with customers.

Boomer: Pin Setters

Today, bowling alleys have automatic pin setters to make life easier. However, it wasn’t always this way. Bowling alleys used to have young boys set up the pins manually after each turn. They would also bring the balls back to the people playing the game.

Gen Z: Movie Theater Attendants

Today, a theater attendant works in some capacity at the movie theater. This includes those who scan and sell the tickets. Movie theater attendants are also responsible for helping customers, cleaning the movie theater, prepping refreshments, and keeping track of stock.

Boomer: Theater Ushers

Usher directing young couple at the cinema or theatre

Theater ushers were there to ensure every person was having a good time. They would often stand at the front of the entrance and usher each person to their seats.

Additionally, they were responsible for checking tickets, giving playbills to customers, and taking care of anything that may be considered disruptive.

Today, theaters still technically have ushers. However, their jobs look a bit different.

Gen Z: E-Commerce /Own Business

Gen Z is often described as bold and not scared to take risks. This means that for many of them, starting their own business doesn’t scare them away. They are willing to take a chance to open up an e-commerce shop and their own business, which can be very successful with hard work and consistency.

However, working in e-commerce doesn’t always mean setting up their own e-commerce shops first. Typical first e-commerce jobs can include working for another company in digital marketing, customer service, or fulfilling products.

Boomer: Shoeshine Boys

Shoeshiner polishing client s boots and blacking

A typical first job often included being a shoeshine boy. Their responsibilities were cleaning a person’s shoe and applying shoeshine afterward.

Gen Z: Social Media Influencer

Most of Gen Z are online and many of them have no fear of taking their shot as a social media influencer. A social media influencer is precisely how it sounds. Someone who has built a large social media following, who can influence their followers’ behaviors, opinions, and habits.

While this isn’t necessarily easy, several Gen Zers have taken the risk and become highly successful. A few Social Media Influencers that are also Gen Zers include:

  • Khaby Lame
  • Addison Rae
  • Brooklyn and Bailey McKnight
  • Sydney Adams
  • Zach King

One Last Note

The job landscape has changed in several ways, from when Boomers‘ entered their first jobs to when Gen Z took to the stage. However, in some areas, they have remained the same. There are still needs for workers such as babysitters, cashiers, or retail workers.

However, as new tech has risen, many newbies are choosing a new way, including social media influencing and content creation. Although change is a common theme, work ethic is still prevalent as each new generation takes on their first jobs.

These Are 10 Unhealthy Juices Worse than Giving Your Kids Soda https://www.momswhothink.com/the-most-unhealthy-juices-worse-than-drinking-soda/ https://www.momswhothink.com/the-most-unhealthy-juices-worse-than-drinking-soda/#respond Sat, 22 Feb 2025 20:31:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=205870&preview=true&preview_id=205870 The post These Are 10 Unhealthy Juices Worse than Giving Your Kids Soda appeared first on Moms Who Think.

If you are looking for an alternative to soda for your family, it can be tempting to reach straight for the juice on the shelf. After all, most are touted as a healthier option. However, not all juices are created equally. These 15 unhealthy juices are worse than drinking soda.

Isn’t Fruit Juice Healthy?

Wait, isn’t juice healthy? In theory, juice should be healthier. After all, many claims to contain plenty of nutrient content. That means they are worth it, right? Well, it depends on which one you choose.

Some juice brands are stocked full of sugar, which can negate the benefits you may be loading up. Additionally, juice can also be relatively low in fiber because, during the juicing process, the fruit is stripped of this natural vitamin.

While some of the juices on this list can have nutrient benefits in small dosages, too much can be problematic. Sugar has a link to increasing several health risks, including stroke, dental cavities, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Therefore, reducing how much of these juices you consume may be a good idea.

What to Look for in a Juice

If you love juice and prefer to get your nutrition this way instead of natural fruits and vegetables, there are a few things to look for. While this isn’t always foolproof, one of the first things to look for is a brand that says it’s 100% juice. This may limit the amount of sugar that has been added to it.

Also, look for low-sodium and juices with no added dyes or preservatives.

Top Unhealthy Juices on Grocery Store Shelves

Now, let’s look at the top unhealthy juices that have graced our grocery store shelves. Unless you are a person who constantly reads labels, it can be easy to assume all juices have significant health benefits. Yet, the juice on this list can be just as unhealthy as drinking soda. Let’s look at the reasons why.

Tropicana Caribbean Sunset

Tropicana Caribbean Sunset juice has a high sugar content, around 22 grams, in an eight-fluid ounce serving. Additionally, this juice also contains very little fiber and other nutritional values. According to the EWG website, Tropicana Caribbean Sunset also has a moderate processing concern.

Sunny D Tangy Original

It should be no surprise that Sunny D Tangy Original juice is considered unhealthy. Sunny D contains 14 grams of sugar in an eight-ounce serving. It is also not 100% fruit. This means Sunny D contains artificial preservatives, flavors, and colors, which can negatively affect health.

Their marketing strategy is misleading because the company touts nutritious benefits. However, Sunny D isn’t exactly orange juice. The only thing it has going for is the 100% recommended daily vitamin C. Yet, the sugar content and additives overshadow this benefit.

Minute Maid Peach Punch

One way to know whether or not a juice is safe to call unhealthy depends on the name. Many people know that if the name has the word cocktail, the blend contains plenty of added flavoring and sugar. The same goes for the word punch.

In the case of Minute Maid Peach Punch, the first two ingredients are water and high fructose corn syrup. On top of the high fructose corn syrup, 23 grams of added sugars are added.

Welch’s Grape Juice

Do you remember when Welch’s Grape Juice claimed its juice was good for your heart? But looking beyond the dress-ups, like being made 100% Concord grads and free of artificial flavors, you will find something more alarming. The total sugars in an 8-ounce Welch’s Grape Juice bottle amount to 35 grams.

A 12-ounce fluid ounce of Dr. Pepper contains 38 grams of sugar. At the same time, a Hershey’s bar has 17 grams of sugar.

Naked Juice

In comparison, the previous juices on this list are small stones when stacked up with Naked Juice. This juice contains a puree of fruit or vegetable combined with added sugars, preservatives, and more.

While most Naked Juices are inherently high in sugar content and calories, one staggering example is the Blue Machine. This Naked Juice contains a whooping 320 calories and 55 grams of sugar. These numbers are well above the average soda or candy bar content.

Hawaiian Punch

If you have ever tasted the kid’s favorite Hawaiin Punch as an adult, you know it tastes like straight-up sugar syrup. Perhaps you asked yourself, how did I ever drink this as a kid?

Hawaiian Punch is packed with high fructose corn syrup, which has been known to increase the risk of adverse effects like weight gain, insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease. This juice also has artificial colors like Red 40 and Blue 1. Furthermore, it’s chock-full of preservatives and artificial flavors. Finding an alternative to this sweet drink would be better if health is a concern.

Juicy Juice Apple Juice

Juice is one of the most common drinks to give little ones, especially as they begin to wean towards eating more than baby food. However, choosing apple juice with labels such as 100% fruit or organic is essential.

Juicy Juice Apple Juice is processed and made using concentrated apple juice. Therefore, the amount of sugar in this drink is as high as 27 grams per 8-ounce drink.

Simply Fruit Punch

In general, if the name of the juice has a punch, it’s most likely unhealthy. Fruit punches typically have a high sugar content. Furthermore, they contain less fruit juice than, say, 100% fruit juice drinks.

Simply Fruit Punch is no exception. This drink has 21 grams of added sugar and 25 grams of total sugar. Additionally, there are very few nutrients like protein and fiber.

Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness

In theory, green drinks are healthier than your average fruit juice. Vegetables have less sugar and calories than fruit. Not to mention the vitamins and minerals that vegetables like broccoli and spinach carry.

However, Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness has less than 2% of those yummy greens. Instead, much of the juice is concentrated in pineapple and apple juice. This spikes the sugar content up to 26 grams of sugar. Even with no added sugar, it’s still on the high side.

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail has at least one thing going for it. Cranberries contain a healthy amount of antioxidants and vitamin C. Therefore, you will still benefit from drinking this juice. However, it’s still a cocktail. Which means it gets mixed up with all kinds of sugars and sweeteners.

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail contains a lot of sugar, 28 grams. This extra sugar and very little nutritional value make this juice just as unhealthy as drinking soda.

In Conclusion

Juice can be an appealing alternative if you are trying to avoid drinks like soda. Soda, as many people know, can be very addictive and also have adverse effects on our health. When trying to kick the habit of drinking soda, reaching for a cup of juice can be easy. However, this may not always be the wisest choice.

These ten juices can be just as unhealthy as drinking soda. They contain high levels of sugar. Some of these juices also have high levels of high fructose corn syrup. Too much high fructose corn syrup can harm a person’s health for several reasons. This ingredient can increase the risk of heart disease, liver disease, tooth decay, gout, and many more.

So, watch for a few things when looking for a delicious but healthier juice. Avoid labels with punch, cocktail, or concentrate in them. Additionally, juices that say 100% fruit juice or organic tend to be healthier. But when in doubt, opting for water is always a good idea!

Waffle House is known for its tasty, filling breakfast that is easy on the wallet. While you can get breakfast at this restaurant any time of day, many people will argue that the best time to go to Waffle House is late at night. While sometimes nothing beats being able to go get food at 2 a.m., it’s safe to say if there isn’t any around you, you can forget Waffle House and go to one of these top late-night spots instead.

History of Waffle House

Waffle House was the brainchild of two neighbors in 1955. Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner dreamed up a place open 24 hours daily. This was meant to be a place where friends and family could come and sit, chat, chill, and rewind from the day.

What started as only a dream has now grown to over 1,900 locations. Waffle House continues to be a beloved restaurant where anyone can go at any time of the day and week. While it is undeniably one of the most popular late-night restaurants, these spots now top my list.

Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings, also known as BW3, is popular for several reasons. The wings are customizable in several sauces. These sauces range from very mild to burn your mouth off. It is also a great sit-down restaurant where family and friends can watch local and national sports on several televisions scattered throughout the restaurant. While Buffalo Wild Wings isn’t open 24/7, most are open later into the night.

In-N-Out Burger

While it depends on location, most In-N-Out Burger joints are open until at least 1 a.m. At In-N-Out Burger, you can order several unique and delicious burgers. Some are on the regular menu. However, one of the most popular things about In-N-Out is its secret menu. You can order burgers like their animal style or 4×4 burgers with four beef patties and four cheese slices.

Steak’ n Shake

Steak’ n Shake has several locations open 24 hours a day. However, some places close between 12 and 2 a.m. This restaurant is popular for its rich and creamy milkshakes and its steakburgers that are hard to beat. One Last Note

People stay up late for several reasons. Whether you are just out traveling or working late, it is convenient to run into a restaurant that is open 24 hours a day. The late-night restaurants are still worth checking out if they aren’t open 24 hours a day. While Waffle House is a great go-to, you should give one of these late-night spots the next time you are out.

Skip the Chips, 15 Cheap and Easy Snacks to Give Your Kids https://www.momswhothink.com/skip-the-chips-cheap-and-easy-snacks-to-give-your-kids/ https://www.momswhothink.com/skip-the-chips-cheap-and-easy-snacks-to-give-your-kids/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2025 20:14:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=266427&preview=true&preview_id=266427 The post Skip the Chips, 15 Cheap and Easy Snacks to Give Your Kids appeared first on Moms Who Think.

When raising kids, it can feel like all they do is snack. After all, they are growing, especially during growth spurts. As parents, we want to give our children healthy snacks, but we also need cheap and easy. Kids love anything quick and accessible. Sometimes, that means they automatically reach for the bag of chips. Sure, they are easy to grab while grocery shopping, too. Yet, you should skip the chips and instead grab one of these cheap and easy snacks to give your kids.

Apple Slices and Peanut Butter

Not every child loves fruit. Sometimes, this is a sensory thing. Chips are universally loved by kids because the flavor doesn’t change. Yet, with fruit, you don’t always know whether or not it is going to be sour or sweet. However, apples are probably the least likely to have a huge flavor change.

So, grab that jar of peanut butter and slice up an apple for a quick and tasty snack.

Bananas

Another fruit that is easy to grab. Bananas give your kids plenty of potassium. It is great to know if your child is plagued by those growing pains more often than you’d like.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt may be a bit pricier than a bag of chips, but it is also healthier. For $4.79, you can grab a 32-ounce tub of Greek yogurt from Kroger. This quick snack contains plenty of protein and potassium. Not to mention, you can grab different flavors if your child isn’t a fan of eating yogurt plain.

Vegetables with Hummus

Velvety Hummus Made From Chickpeas, Tahini, Olive Oil, And A Touch Of Spice, A Dip That Never Fails To Impress

On average, a container of hummus is around $3.99 at Kroger. Throw a spoonful of hummus on a plate with slices of cucumbers, carrots, and bell peppers, and you have yourself an easy and healthy snack. Make it even easier by prepping the vegetables at the beginning of the week or buying packages of already sliced vegetables.

Cottage Cheese

A 16-ounce tub of cottage cheese at Kroger costs around $2 apiece. Since it’s already made and packaged, cottage cheese is one of the easiest snacks to give your kids. This snack also provides your child with protein, calcium, and potassium, among other essential vitamins and minerals.

Cheese and Crackers

Cheese and crackers are a versatile and quick snack that most kids devour. You can change up the crackers by providing Club, Saltine, or even Ritz crackers. Grab a pack of block cheese to slice up, string cheese, or pre-sliced packs of cheese. The options are limitless with this snack.

Popcorn

Popcorn is a quick and easy snack that has many options. You can buy the already-popped popcorn found in the chip aisle or popcorn that is popped in the microwave. You can also find popcorn in several different flavors.

Muffins

Muffins can be made from scratch to control what ingredients are going into each one. On the other hand, if you are in a hurry, prepackaged muffins make an excellent snack. While they may not be much healthier than chips, they are just as quick.

Whole Grain Cereal

A bag of whole grain cereal makes a quick snack for kids on the go. Just fill up a Ziplock bag, throw it in the diaper bag, and be on your way.

Raisins

A six pack of Sun-Maid Rasins is around $2.79 at Kroger. The price makes this snack cheap, while the prepackaging makes it easy. While not every child is a fan of raisins, they are considered healthier than chips. Raisins contain calcium, potassium, iron, and protein.

Toast with Peanut Butter

Grab a bag of bread and a jar of peanut butter, and you have yourself a quick snack. If your child comes home starving, before they reach for those chips, grab the toaster. Toast one or two slices of bread spread on the peanut butter, and now you have a filling and somewhat healthier snack.

Goldfish

Goldfish is right up there with chips when it comes to health. However, if your kids are craving something different, grab a bag of goldfish. They are quick enough to throw in a Ziplock bag, and the price is similar to a bag of chips.

Applesauce

Applesauce pouches are a quick snack that is easy to grab and go. Of course, the price of the pouches is more than a bag of chips. This is because you are paying for convenience. Yet, a pack of six cups of applesauce is around $1.99 at Kroger, or you could opt to go for the large jar at $3.39.

Graham Crackers

Graham crackers are also a quick snack that is easy to grab and go. You can buy cinnamon graham crackers or plain ones, which makes them a bit versatile. Also, with the Kroger brand coming in at $2.79, the price is comparable to a bag of chips.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are an easy and cheap vegetable that packs more for your child’s health than other snacks on this list. For ease, grab the packs of already sliced cucumbers from the store.

One Last Note

Most growing children love to snack. It’s normal and quite good for kids to feed their bodies what they need. However, a bag of chips should be one of the last options. Instead, try one of these cheap and quick snacks. Most on this list are much better and healthier choices as well!

When pregnant, new moms are faced with an array of decisions. One common and often most stressful decision regarding new babies is whether or not to breastfeed. While every mother is different, many women decide to at least try to breastfeed right away. However, some become quickly discouraged for various reasons, like a lack of milk production, discomfort, or pressure from others. Whether to breastfeed or bottlefeed is a personal choice; either decision is okay and right for your family. Sometimes, mothers cannot breastfeed because of medical reasons. Yet, for the ones who choose to breastfeed, this task can feel daunting or a little stressful.

So, I reached out to expert lactation consultants from Southeastern Indiana for their expertise, and they shared their wisdom and experience with me. Both lactation consultations have several years of experience, with one, Collisha Wright-Davidson, being an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Read more about what a lactation expert wants you to know.

Pros of Breastfeeding

Before we dive into what a lactation expert wants you to know, let’s look at the pros of breastfeeding. Sometimes, the topic of breastfeeding versus bottle feeding can be controversial. While both the AAP and the WHO recommend breastfeeding until the ages of six months to two years old, the decision is a personal choice. However, there are some great benefits to choosing breastfeeding.

  • Breastfeeding is a cheaper option.
  • There is no prep for breastfeeding.
  • Breastfeeding offers your baby all the fantastic nutrients they need to grow and thrive.
  • It strengthens the baby’s immune system.
  • Breastfeeding also aids in helping the baby’s digestive system.
  • It can prevent SIDS.
  • Breastfeeding is also great for preemies.
  • Not to mention, breastfeeding is excellent for momma as well. It can aid in weight loss and recovery and lower the risk of postpartum depression.

Cons of Breastfeeding

Like anything, breastfeeding also comes with a list of cons.

  • Breastfeeding can be uncomfortable, especially at first.
  • Moms will need to watch their intake of foods and drinks.
  • Newborns need to eat often, which can be demanding and tiresome for a new mom getting little rest.
  • It’s not possible to see how much the baby is eating.

Now that we have discussed the pros and cons of breastfeeding let’s examine what a lactation consultant wishes all new mothers knew.

Learn All You Can About Breastfeeding While You Are Pregnant

When it comes to what a lactation expert wants you to know, one of the most essential things is that education is important. Lactation expert Collisha says that while you are pregnant it is the best time to learn everything you can about breastfeeding.

Many online resources are available, including the Office for Women’s Health. Additionally, hospitals typically offer classes for new moms and have a lactation consultant to contact with any questions.

Additionally, if possible, talk to your mother or grandmother about their experience with breastfeeding. While everyone’s journey is different, this may offer insight into any difficulties they may have had and help prepare you mentally for your journey.

Right After Birth, Place the Baby on Your Breast

After birth, the mother’s body begins to produce colostrum. This yellowish milk contains many nutrients and antibodies that benefit the baby.

Many lactation consultants suggest the best thing to do right after birth is to place the baby on the breast. The WHO and UNICEF agree that the baby should be introduced to breastfeeding within an hour of birth because it has many benefits. These benefits include:

  • Bonding between mom and baby.
  • It takes advantage of the baby’s wakefulness.
  • Regulates the baby’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing.
  • It can stabilize the baby’s blood sugar.

So, if your baby is born without needing urgent medical attention, you can try placing them on your breast right after birth. Collisha Wright-Davidson shared this interesting fact, stating that “babies can actually ‘crawl’ to the breast right after birth when placed on momma’s belly.”

If Possible, Stay Away From Offering the Bottle

Sometimes, moms have no choice but to offer the bottle. This can be necessary if they have to return to work after a short period or are having difficulties getting enough rest in those early days. However, our lactation consultant Collisha suggested that moms avoid offering the bottle while breastfeeding.

The reason for this is because doing so can cause nipple confusion. There are times when latch difficulties arise. If this happens to you, do not hesitate to contact a lactation consultant for advice and encouragement.

All Your Baby Needs Right After Birth is Your Colostrum

Sometimes, new moms become stressed if their milk doesn’t come in right away. However, the female body produces colostrum immediately, and it’s all the baby needs right after birth. Although colostrum doesn’t seem like much, it is packed with nutrients and antibodies that promote your baby’s immune system.

Additionally, when a baby is born, its belly is tiny—think the size of a cherry. This means that a baby’s belly can only hold a small amount of milk, around a teaspoon or less. This is one reason why babies need to eat frequently. So, do not stress if it doesn’t seem like your baby is eating enough. They do not need a lot, and your colostrum is enough.

Check Your Baby’s Output For Clues

For moms stressed about whether or not their baby is eating enough check their output for clues. Be mindful and note how many times a day they urinate. If your baby is not getting enough milk, they will stop urinating. This can be a clue that it’s time to reach out to a consultant or a doctor for advice on the next steps.

Breastfeeding is a Process

For some, breastfeeding comes easily; it feels as natural as breathing. However, for others, it’s more complex. It’s important to remember that breastfeeding your new baby is a process.

There will be bumps in the road and other days when everything goes smoothly. Keep walking the journey even if it doesn’t happen as fast or as you think it should.

Remember, Every Baby and Mom is Different

Any mother with more than one child will tell you that every baby is different. It’s also important to remember that every mom is different as well. Your journey is distinct from your friend’s or your sister’s.

This means you will be doing yourself and your baby a disservice if you compare your breastfeeding journey to anyone else’s. Instead, take it one step and one day at a time. Reach out for support from an experienced lactation consultant, a friend, or a family member. Someone who can remind you why you are on this journey, to begin with.

Enjoy Every Moment

The moments with our babies go by way too fast. It’s easy to get sucked into a mindset that makes us miss the important moments. Such as bonding with your newborn, watching them grow, smile, and laugh.

While it’s impossible to enjoy every little moment, taking care of yourself can help get rid of a negative mind and lead to refreshing. It’s important to find time for yourself and get plenty of rest because it can allow you to enjoy your newborn while they are still so small.

Don’t Be too Hard on Yourself

If your breastfeeding journey isn’t going the way you had dreamed, do not be hard on yourself. As stated before, every mom and baby are different. Breastfeeding may take more effort for you but do not beat yourself down.

A positive attitude will help you more on your journey than a negative one. This is why taking it one feeding at a time is important.

When Your Milk Comes in Will Vary

On average, a woman’s breast milk takes three to five days to come in. Breastfeeding moms will begin to notice their breasts becoming fuller. Additionally, their body will produce more milk each time the baby feeds. This means a woman’s milk supply will be well established on average after around a month.

However, “on average” doesn’t mean this is every woman’s story. It takes multiple times breastfeeding for milk to come in, and when it does will vary from woman to woman. If your milk isn’t coming in right away, stay encouraged. Continue working with a lactation consultant, monitor your baby’s output, and breastfeed exclusively if their output is okay. Before you know it, your milk will be in!

In Conclusion

Being able to breastfeed is a unique and beautiful part of being a woman and a new mom. However, this doesn’t mean it is easy. When it comes to breastfeeding these important tips are what a lactation expert wants you to know. For some women, their journey of breastfeeding their new baby is lined with curves and bumps in the road, while for others, it is smooth sailing. However, both experiences are normal because every woman and baby are different.

These tips from our local lactation consultants can help you become confident and prepared for your breastfeeding journey.

If you’re in the mood for fried chicken, the good news is that you have excellent competitors vying for your love. While the debate about which restaurant is the best always remains, there are customers who swear that the best-fried chicken restaurant is Raising Canes. Although some can’t be persuaded no matter what facts you present, that doesn’t mean Raising Canes is the undisputed best. In fact, I used to love Raising Canes, but these eight places have superior fried chicken. Don’t believe me? Just give them a try and see for yourself.

History of Raising Canes

Raising Canes was the brainchild of Todd Graves. While the official restaurant opened in 1996, he dreamed it up far before that time. He had the idea for a restaurant that served only chicken fingers while taking a college class and was told it would never work. But Todd eventually saw his dream come to life despite any negative feedback.

Restaurants That Have Better Fried Chicken Than Raising Canes

Raising Cane's

While there’s no debate that Raising Canes has amazingly delicious fried chicken, there are restaurants out there that have superior fried chicken. Or at the very least, fried chicken that is just as good as Raising Canes. Take a look at these nine chicken places that have superior fried chicken.

Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A was opened by S. Truett Cathy in 1967. However, he had plenty of experience operating a small business and restaurant years before that. His first restaurant was opened in 1946 with his brother Ben.

Why Chick-fil-A’s Chicken is Superior

Chick-fil-A has a secret recipe that has customers coming back for more time and time again. Many people claim that the flavor is contributed to marinating the chicken in pickle juice. Regardless, the chicken is tasty each time!

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen

Popeyes Chicken officially opened in 1972, but it wasn’t named Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at first. The original name was Chicken on the Run. However, the restaurant wasn’t quite as successful as they hoped at first. So, the owner, Alvin C. Copeland Sr., rebranded and changed the chicken recipe in an attempt to attract more customers. The rebranding was successful, and Popeyes has grown to become one of the most popular chicken restaurants in America.

Why Popeyes’ Chicken is Superior

Popeyes Chicken has quite a kick to it. If you enjoy chicken with the perfect amount of spice, then Popeyes is the one to try.

Kentucky Fried Chicken

When people think about fast food and fried chicken, one of the first restaurants that comes to mind is Kentucky Fried Chicken. Most people know the famous Colonel, Harland Sanders. He opened his first KFC in 1952 after spending years perfecting his fried chicken recipe.

Why Kentucky Fried Chicken is Superior

Kentucky Fried Chicken is the best-known friend chicken restaurant around. While the chicken is crunchy and tasty, the meals they offer take the flavor to a whole new level.

Wingstop

Wingstop first opened in 1994 to serve customers superior wings. The first Wingstop opened in Texas and quickly grew to over 2,000 restaurants in the franchise.

Why Wingstop Chicken is Superior

Wingstop goes beyond fried chicken and the flavors of the sauce are extensive. Customers can choose a variety of spices and rubs that bring a unique taste to each meal.

bb.q Chicken

Bb.q Chicken began in Seoul, South Korea in 1995. The goal was to create Korean fried chicken that was both delicious and top-quality. There are over 3,500 locations all around the world, which is a testament to how tasty and delicious bb.q Chicken has grown to be.

Why bb.q Chicken is Superior

Bb.q Chicken restaurant gives customers a unique taste of fried chicken. Instead of Americanized chicken, you can enjoy Korean fried chicken. The flavor goes beyond anything you’re used to getting at American fast-food chains.

Jack in the Box

Jack in the Box is a burger joint, but they also sell excellent fried chicken. This restaurant opened in 1951 and quickly became the place to grab delicious cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, and tacos!

Why Jack in the Box Chicken is Superior

Jack in the Box carries more than just fried chicken. Yet, their fried chicken goes beyond just good. It has a tender center with a crispy and crunchy outside and the flavoring is just right – what more do you want in fried chicken?

Zaxby’s

Zaxby’s was started by Zac McLeroy and Tony Townley. The first restaurant was opened in Georgia in 1990. Zaxby’s was the passion project of two college friends who put in the hard work and dedication to create something incredible.

Why Zaxby’s Chicken is Superior

Zaxby’s focuses on high-quality chicken. Their food is fresh, flavorful, and crispy. Not to mention, customers rave about how the chicken at Zaxby’s is consistently great.

Slim Chickens

Hand-breaded chicken is a favorite of both adults and children. If you are craving chicken tenders, then Slim Chickens is the perfect place to go for lunch. This restaurant was started in 2003 by Tom Gordon and Greg Smart. Throughout the last 20 years, Slim Chickens has grown to over 200 locations throughout the United States and world.

Why Slim Chicken is Superior

Fresh is the priority at Slim Chicken. This means that the chicken sold here has a higher quality flavor than chicken that has been frozen.

One Last Note

Sometimes, nothing hits the spot quite like fried chicken. While Raising Canes is a delicious option for lunch or dinner, there are so many other excellent choices. If you enjoy chicken with a little bit of kick, give Popeyes chicken a try. On the flip side, if you enjoy your fried chicken with a tasty burger, a joint like Jack in the Box is right up your alley. No matter where you like to buy your fried chicken, there’s one thing for sure – these eight places have superior chicken to Raising Canes.

If Dunkin’ Adds These Menu Items, I’ll Be the First One in Line https://www.momswhothink.com/if-dunkin-adds-these-menu-items-ill-be-the-first-one-in-line/ https://www.momswhothink.com/if-dunkin-adds-these-menu-items-ill-be-the-first-one-in-line/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:03:00 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=266123&preview=true&preview_id=266123 The post If Dunkin’ Adds These Menu Items, I’ll Be the First One in Line appeared first on Moms Who Think.

For avid frozen and specialty coffee lovers, two main options typically come out on top. These are Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks. While Starbucks may be the preferred choice for many, Dunkin’ Donuts has one thing going for them that Starbucks doesn’t: their delicious menu, chock-full of wraps, specialty drinks, and yummy donuts. While Dunkin’ already has several tasty treats on its official menu, if Dunkin’ adds these menu items, I’ll be the first one in line.

Dunkin’s Popularity

There’s no denying that Dunkin’ Donuts is quite popular. But where exactly does it stand in popularity compared to other chains? According to Statista, Dunkin’ Donuts comes in second on the coffee shop and cafe chains list. The leading chain is Starbucks, yet Dunkin’ comes in second with 11,918 million dollars in sales (stats from 2023.)

This brings it well ahead of the third leading chain, which was Dutch Bros Coffee.

These stats are well in line with the everlasting debate on which chain is better.

Items That Could Work on Dunkin’ Donuts Menu

Dunkin’ Donuts has an official menu with specialty drinks like refreshers and frappes. Additionally, their breakfast items go well beyond donuts to include wraps, sandwiches, and stuffed bagel minis. However, not everyone knows that Dunkin’ also has what they call a secret menu. These items aren’t on the official menu, but customers can still request these items. Take a look at six menu items that should be added to Dunkin’s official menu.

Eggnog Latte

Two glasses of eggnogg with whipped cream and cinnamon. Auld Man's milk, Coquito or Creme de Vie or Eierlikör.

The eggnog latte is a favorite around the holiday season. However, if you are craving this yummy drink in say, June, who says you can’t have it? Certainly not Dunkin’. Of course, it may not taste exactly like the eggnog during Christmas time, since it’s created using vanilla chai with a caramel swirl, but it’s still delicious.

Why Should Dunkin’ Donuts Add This to Their Menu?

Sometimes, customers don’t want to wait until the holiday season to get their favorites. You can’t help when a craving hits. Sometimes, these cravings happen in May or June! So, why wait? Eggnog lattes should be enjoyed all year round.

Breakfast Burritos

Breakfast burritos are a popular menu item at fast food restaurants like McDonalds and Wendy’s. While Dunkin’ does carry this item occasionally, most of the time, the menu item that’s the most similar is their wake-up wraps. But you can still request a breakfast burrito off their secret menu.

Why Should Dunkin’ Donuts Add This to Their Menu?

A wake-up wrap is great, but sometimes you just need your breakfast ingredients wrapped all the way up. What better way to do this than a typical flour tortilla?

Ultimate Bagel Bites

Cream Cheese Bowl

Bagel bites are a delicious little snack or breakfast that is popular at Dunkin’. These treats are little muffins, stuffed with cream cheese. You can either choose an everything bagel or a plain bagel. Warmed up, these snacks are a great way to get your day going. But why not request the ultimate bagel bites? The ultimate bagel bites include some snackin’ bacon with cream cheese.

Why Should Dunkin’ Donuts Add This to Their Menu?

Not everyone knows you can request some crispy bacon to be stuffed inside your bagel. Why not add some crunch to your breakfast?

Birthday Cake Iced Coffee

Do you have a birthday coming up? Why not try the birthday cake iced coffee to brighten up your day? This special treat uses iced coffee with French vanilla and hazelnut. These flavors make your drink taste very similar to a birthday cake.

Why Should Dunkin’ Donuts Add This to Their Menu?

Kids and adults alike enjoy fun and tasty flavors. Whether it’s because of nostalgia or just being in the mood for something fun. The birthday cake iced coffee is a treat that can be enjoyed both on your birthday or any other day of the year!

Ultimate Maple Bacon Donut

Bacon and donuts don’t necessarily seem like something that would be tasty together, but you might be surprised if you try this combination. The ultimate maple donut takes it a step further and adds snackin’ bacon to a maple glazed donut.

Why Should Dunkin’ Donuts Add This to Their Menu?

There’s just something unique and tasty about combining maple flavor with bacon. Then add in your typical glazed donut and you are in for such a treat!

Ultimate Roll-Ups

Are you in the mood for something other than a wake-up wrap or donut? The ultimate roll-ups take your favorite breakfast ingredients and combine them all in a tortilla. These items can include hashbrowns, ketchup, bacon, and more.

Why Should Dunkin’ Donuts Add This to Their Menu?

Not everyone knows you can request a custom-made tortilla wrap at Dunkin’. Sometimes, customers are in the mood for something with all their favorite ingredients. A menu item this delicious should be made known to everyone.

One Last Note

Dunkin’ Donuts is a popular chain that is right up there with Starbucks. Not only do they serve specialty drinks but they also have delicious menu items to complete your breakfast or midday snack. These top items should be added to Dunkin’s official menu so more and more people can experience just how tasty each one is.

Many people anticipate the Girl Scout cookie-selling season every year. With it comes the debate, “which cookie is the best?” Most of the time, Samoas win every contest, even when going up against Thin Mints or Tag-Alongs. Of course, supporting the Girl Scouts by buying their cookies each year is a wonderful idea. These girls learn so much by selling these cookies, including people skills and money management. If you want to move past your typical go-to cookie and the familiar Samoas, these six Girl Scout cookies are better and worth trying this year.

Why All the Hype for Samoas?

Samoas typically win Best Girl Scout cookies for several reasons. This cookie combines crunchy and chewy textures with delicious caramel. Not to mention the coconut and chocolate flavors that pull the whole cookie together. However, these six other Girl Scout cookies are better than Samoas, or at the very least just as good. Give them a try this season!

Adventurefuls

Adventurefuls are a recent addition to the Girl Scout cookie lineup. This cookie is described on the website as an ‘indulgent brownie-inspired cookie with caramel-flavored creme, and a hint of sea salt.” If that doesn’t make your mouth water, I don’t know what will!

Why They Are Just as Good as Samoas

Adventurefuls may be a fairly new addition to the lineup, however, they have become increasingly popular. The combination of brownie with caramel may be surprising. Yet, the surprise is a rather pleasant one. Combined with the subtle sea salt, this new cookie is quite an adventure.

Thin Mints

The Thin Mints are often in a tight race with Samoas every season. You have customers who swear by Samoas only, never giving Thin Mints a try. Then, on the other side of the line, are the Thin Mint advocates who turn their nose up at Samoas. Both of these cookies have fairly different textures and flavors. However, everyone’s world would be better if they embraced both cookies with open arms.

Why They Are Just as Good

Sometimes mint is an acquired taste. Yet, the Thin Mints are worth trying at least once. This flavor combines a delicious chocolate cookie with a thin chocolate mint coating. Perfect for those who love chocolate.

Caramel Chocolate Chip

Another new Girl Scout cookie is the delicious Caramel Chocolate Chip. Again, this cookie combines caramel and chocolate for a yummy treat. They have large chocolate chips in them, which is also appealing to those who can’t get enough chocolate.

Why They Are Just as Good

These caramel chocolate chip cookies have one really important aspect – they are gluten-free! This is a perk for so many. Additionally, there are only around 170 calories per three cookies.

Lemonades

Let’s take a break from the chocolate and caramel flavor for a second and explore something different entirely. If you love the distinct flavor of lemon, then Lemonades cookies are for you.

Why They Are Just as Good

Lemonades are the perfect cookie for those who enjoy a refreshing flavor. The lemon taste is not overwhelming, which is perfect for those who don’t like strong flavors. The shortbread texture also takes you away from the texture of Samoas or even thin mints, which can be a nice break.

Peanut Butter Patties, Tagalongs

Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Cookies

Tagalongs have been another popular Girl Scout cookie throughout the years. These cookies are perfect if you prefer the flavor of peanut butter combined with a vanilla cookie. Tagalongs have a crunchy flavor and a chocolate coating, satisfying taste buds each time.

Why They Are Just as Good

While Tagalongs have a different flavor than Samoas, this cookie is just as good. It still gives customers a crunchy texture but combines different flavors. This can take you out of your comfort zone while still getting a similar crunchy texture. Additionally, Tagalongs have been on the top of the Girl Scouts’ popular cookie list for years. So, you know they have to be delicious!

Peanut Butter Sandwich, Do-si-dos

If you need a break from the chocolate flavor but still want something in the peanut butter category, then the Do-si-dos are worth a try. This cookie is crunchy on the outside and include a creamy peanut butter filling.

Why They Are Just As Good

If you love peanut butter, then you are in for a lovely surprise with Do-si-dos. This cookie greets you with a delicious peanut butter filling as soon as you take a bite. They also satisfy your sweet tooth the same way that Samoas do, just with a different flavor.

One Last Note

Girl Scouts cookie season is upon us again! Even if you are a fan of Samoas who refuses to try any other cookie, I encourage you to take a step out of your comfort zone this year. You can still be the number one fan of Samoas and also enjoy the occasional Thin Mint or Adventurefuls.

After all, it’s always a good idea to keep your cookie options open since you never know what type of mood you’ll be in after dinner. You just may be in the mood for a peanut butter delight or something more citrusy! That is why these cookies are worth at least trying, and to some people, these six Girl Scout cookies are better.

12 Reasons Why Panera Is So Expensive for a Sandwich and Soup Spot https://www.momswhothink.com/12-reasons-why-panera-is-so-expensive-for-a-sandwich-and-soup-spot/ https://www.momswhothink.com/12-reasons-why-panera-is-so-expensive-for-a-sandwich-and-soup-spot/#respond Sun, 16 Feb 2025 19:28:43 +0000 https://www.momswhothink.com/?p=265908&preview=true&preview_id=265908 The post 12 Reasons Why Panera Is So Expensive for a Sandwich and Soup Spot appeared first on Moms Who Think.

Since 1987, the Panera Bread Company has provided customers with artisanal crafted bread, delicious soups, and comforting dishes. While not everyone is a fan of Panera Bread in part because of their high prices, so many avid customers praise the company. The reasons for the praise include their comforting menu items, relaxing atmosphere, and so much more. Other people question why in the world Panera is so expensive. While not everyone will find the company’s prices justifiable, if you look at the facts, there are several reasons why Panera’s prices are worth every penny. Let’s take a look at 12 reasons why Panera is so expensive.

Get to Know the Panera Brand

Store Front

Panera became a restaurant in 1987. It started out as a simple bakery in St. Louis. The company has always been committed to only putting the freshest and cleanest ingredients into their food. Panera Bread can be found in 48 states. This brand is also known as Saint Louis Bread Co. in some areas of the country.

When it comes to prices, it’s important to remember that Panera is a step up from fast food. This means that their prices will not be competitive with prices at places like McDonalds. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the reasons why Panera Bread Company is so expensive.

Commitment to Fresh Ingredients

At Panera, you can find several unique dishes to choose from. This means the company is selective with what goes into their food, choosing only to provide fresh ingredients to meet their high-quality standards. This is one reason why Panera is so expensive for a bread and soup spot.

Prioritizes Clean Ingredients

Custard Ingredients

Along with fresh ingredients, Panera prioritizes clean ingredients as well. The company pays more attention to what additives and preservatives are in ingredients and chooses not to allow these options a chance to make it into their dishes.

Panera is transparent with the ingredients they say no to and even has a no-no list posted on their website. This list includes ingredients like calcium bromate, salatrim, and advantame. Take a look at their complete no-no list here.

Quality Sourcing

Another reason that Panera’s prices are higher has to do with how they source their ingredients. The company doesn’t just want to source its ingredients from anywhere. Instead, they take great care when making this decision. Panera takes a look at the freshness, quality, and origin of the ingredients before making any commitment.

Variety in Menu Choices

Since Panera takes great care with its quality sourcing, its menu choices change often. This is typically because freshness plays a part in their menu options. They choose to provide customers with in-season ingredients. Some delicious, seasonal items they carry include vegetarian autumn squash soup available in the fall or the strawberry poppyseed with chicken salad during the summer.

Artisanal Bread Making

Panera is a step up from fast food for several reasons. However, one is because of their artisanal bread making. The company hires bakers who are trained in crafting fresh pastries and breads. This in itself takes plenty of time, skill, and care to create fresh bread and pastries every day.

Comfortable Ambiance

Walking into a Panera will immediately put you at ease, likely due to their comfortable ambiance. The restaurant has dimmer lighting, fireplaces scattered throughout the restaurant, and an inviting atmosphere. When you choose to eat at Panera, you’re not only paying for the food – you’re also paying for the experience.

Relaxing Atmosphere

Panera Bread

This calming atmosphere is meant to create a place where diners feel relaxed and at home – a communal space where you can chill and chat with your family. No rushing is necessary at Panera.

Menu Innovations

Panera is always striving to create menu options that are innovative and give customers what they want. They go above and beyond to incorporate seasonal ingredients with new specials, unique twists, and comforting favorites together. These innovations intrigue guests into trying something new. Their menu is always full of surprises which keep diners coming back.

Boast “Healthier” Options

Panera has always been considered healthy. This is apparent in their commitment to fresh and clean ingredients. Additionally, Panera Bread was the first national restaurant chain to post calories for their meals online voluntarily, paving the way for other restaurants to follow suit.

Furthermore, Panera chooses to forgo additives, preservatives, chemicals, and more. This, combined with their plant-based and lean meat options, means that this restaurant offers plenty of healthier options.

They Keep Fresh Produce in Stock

Not only does Panera have a commitment to fresh bakery options, but they also choose to keep fresh produce in stock. Instead of using canned or frozen ingredients, they choose to make their dishes with fresh produce.

Panera Isn’t Fast Food, It’s a Bakery

Since Panera has pretty fast service, it’s easy to confuse it with a fast-food restaurant. However, Panera isn’t fast food. It’s a fast-casual bakery. This in itself means that their prices will be higher than your typical fast-food restaurant. After all, you can’t typically walk into a bakery and expect to pay the same amount you would at a restaurant like Taco Bell or McDonalds.

Considers Environmental Impact

Panera also considers the environmental impact for each of its company decisions. They have taken great care to consider the impact they’re making on the environment and even have created a responsibility update, with the most recent one being in 2023.

Some people love them. Some people hate them. But there’s no denying the all-you-can-eat buffets that ruled our country in the 80s and 90s made quite the impact. Although they aren’t nearly as popular as they used to be, all-you-can-eat buffets still exist in America for those who love choices. Here are ten lesser-known buffets that are way better than Golden Corral. (Read: 36 Places Set to Get a New Raising Cane’s and People Are Excited.)

History of Buffets

All-you-can-eat buffets have ancient origins. While it wasn’t uncommon for many countries like Rome and Egypt to have feasts that included community dining, the modern-day buffet was inspired by Sweden. The Swedes had what was called the “brannvinsbord,” which included cured meats, bread, cheese, and more. It was then called the smorgasbord in the 18th century, which evolved into a full meal.

During the World Fair in 1939, Americans got a taste of the Swedish smorgasbord, and the idea of all-you-can-eat buffet-style dining was lit. The modern-day buffets sure went on a long ride to get to what we know today. Here are ten lesser-known buffets that are way better than Golden Corral.

America’s Incredible Pizza Company

One of the lesser-known buffets is America’s Incredible Pizza Company. It combines an all-you-can-eat buffet with gaming and entertainment. The selection of food totals around 150. Plus, the low prices are quite appealing.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

If you are looking for a low-pressure and fun place to take your child for a few hours, America’s Incredible Pizza Company thrives on entertainment.

Shakey’s Pizza

Shakey’s Pizza has been around since the 1950s. Since then, they have been able to maintain their high-quality standards.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

Sometimes, the food quality at all-you-can-eat buffets is questionable. However, at Shakey’s Pizza, customers are typically pleased with the quality of the food. From the freshness of the pizza crust to the tastefulness of the buffet food items, Shakey’s is one restaurant you may want to visit again and again.

Chuck-A-Rama

Chuck-A-Rama is a fun all-you-can-eat buffet. Don’t expect to just show up any day of the week and get the same choices.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

One of the fun things about this restaurant is that they have a different theme every day during the week. These themes range from Mexican Day on Thursdays to Barbecue Day on Wednesdays.

Ponderosa

If you were a kid in the 90s, chances are you remember eating at Ponderosa. While this chain is not nearly as popular as it used to be, there are still 20 Ponderosa locations you can eat at today.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

Ponderosa has an impressive food selection. Additionally, their buffet remains high quality, especially for the price of the buffet.

Sizzler

Sizzler once had their day in the sun but unfortunately, they have since faced bankruptcy and had to shut down the majority of their restaurants. You can still find a few Sizzlers scattered across America. So, if you are feeling nostalgic and in the mood for good all-you-can-eat buffet food, visiting one again should be on your bucket list.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

Sizzler serves delicious desserts that are a great way to top off your meal. Speaking of your meal, there are so many different food options at Sizzler, that deciding what to eat will be the hardest decision you make that day.

Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant

If you love seafood, then eating at Captain George’s Seafood restaurant is a must. It includes options like snow crab legs, sirloin steak, and shrimp.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

The food that is served at Captain George’s Seafood restaurant is a little higher quality than what you would typically find at an all-you-can-eat buffet. After all, serving snow crab legs means that the restaurant has to charge more for their buffet. Even though the price is higher than typical, the food choices are more unique, and many say worth every penny.

Pizza Ranch

Pizza Ranch is a buffet chain that has more than 200 restaurants located in the Midwest. Don’t let the name fool you, this restaurant doesn’t just carry pizza. They offer diners food choices like fried chicken and salads.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

The food choices give families a wide range of options. While it may be a bit pricier than your typical buffet, many people believe it is worth the price. This is because the quality of food is better.

Fogo de Chao

Fogo de Chao is often said to be the best all-you-can-eat buffet that exists in America. The chefs are top notch, and customers get to experience deliciously cooked meats. These meats are carved right at the table. Additionally, diners can go to the buffet for items like salad and side dishes.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

Fogo de Chao has excellent and high-quality food that is difficult to really find at any other buffet-style restaurant. That alone makes it worth eating at.

Shady Maple Smorgasbord

Shady Maple Smorgasbord is also highly regarded as a top-notch all-you-can-eat buffet. This restaurant is in East Earl, Pennsylvania. Here diners can get all three meals which include their popular food items like roast beef.

Perks of Eating at This Restaurant

A fun perk of eating at Shady Maple Smorgasbord is the fact that they have themed nights. They can range from a seafood night to a wing/rib night. This alone makes Shady Maple Smorgasbord worth checking out at least once in your lifetime.

One Last Note

Golden Corral may be the one restaurant that pops into your mind when you think of all-you-can-eat buffets, but there are so many other excellent choices. While the popularity of these restaurants has died down within the last 20 years, there are still so many choices that offer high-quality and delicious food. It’s apparent from this list that these ten lesser-known buffets are way better than Golden Corral. (I Used to Grab Jimmy John’s for Lunch Every Week, But Now I Prefer These 8 Sandwich Spots.)

Finding a truly amazing burger joint can be challenging. Sure, there’s fast food on every corner, but sometimes you’re craving something more than McDonald’s or Wendy’s. That’s where In-N-Out Burger shines. They provide customers with delicious burgers and tasty milkshakes. Plus, they have several amazing perks – like their not-so-secret menu. It’s includes items that aren’t officially on the In-N-Out menu, but you can still order them. These items were built with customers and their preferences in mind. Here are nine secret menu items In-N-Out should finally make official. (Everyone Loves Cracker Barrel, But These 8 Southern Establishments Are Better.)

Flying Dutchman

The flying Dutchman is a unique In-N-Out secret menu item. First, it uses absolutely no bun. Instead, this burger has two beef patties with two slices of cheese melted in between.

Customers can request the flying Dutchman plain or they can ask for more customization like the grilled onion on top in place of the buns.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

The Flying Dutchman is a great option for customers who want to pack in protein without the extra carbs from the bun. Additionally, the sandwich is simple and to the point, which many people prefer.

Wishburger

The Wishburger is for all those vegetarians out there. It’s not often that a fast food joint will have options for those who prefer no meat. But on the secret menu at In-N-Out, this is an option.

This burger is plant-based and made in the restaurant. The veggie patties include vegetables such as pickles, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

It can be hard for a vegetarian or vegan to go to a fast-food restaurant and find items that fit their preferences. But at In-N-Out, they make their customers a priority, and that includes customers with varying lifestyles and preferences.

Root Beer Float

I don’t know about you, but I have vivid childhood memories of my parents making me root beer floats from scratch. You can’t order this comforting dessert at any old restaurant, but In-N-Out makes theirs delicious by adding half a cup of root beer to a vanilla milkshake.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

If nostalgia had a flavor, it would taste like a root beer float. It’s a unique and tasty treat for the young and the old. More customers would order them if these yummy treats were put on the official menu.

Animal Style Burger and Fries

One of the most popular items on the not-so-secret menu is the animal-style burger. It consists of mustard grilled patties, extra thousand island spread, toasted buns, and a whole list of tasty vegetables.

The animal-style fries include cheese, the popular In-N-Out spread, and grilled onions. Talk about tasty.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

Animal-style fries and burgers give customers a loaded experience that is hard to beat. The patties are cooked in extra mustard on the grill. Plus you can add extra pickles or grilled onions.

Around the World Shake

The Around the World Shake is quite the experience. It takes you to every flavor of ice cream that is on the menu, which is how it got the name. Around the World Shake mixes all the ice cream flavors that are at the In-N-Out restaurant.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

One thing about the secret menu item is you may not always know what flavors you’re getting. After all, it’s whatever is in the restaurant at the time. This alone can lead to a burst of flavor that you have never quite experienced before.

Gorilla Style

The Gorilla Style Burger is also called the Monkey Style. It’s a burger with fries directly in the middle. Who wouldn’t love that?

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

Why eat your fries as a side, when you can have them directly on your sandwich? It’s sort of like a kill-two-birds-with-one-stone type of concept.

Cheesy Wiki

The In-N-Out Cheesy Wiki is a take on the classic grilled cheese that has been on the secret menu for quite some time. Think your classic grilled cheese, but with four slices instead of one.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

The Cheesy Wiki is a cheese lover’s dream. It comes with gooey goodness that one slice of cheese simply can’t master. For that reason alone, it deserves to be on the official menu.

4×4 Burger

In-N-Out Burger four-patty cheeseburger

The 4×4 burger is also known as the ‘Quad Burger.’ The premise is simple. This burger contains four beef patties and four slices of American cheese. You can also order the 3×3 burger which has three beef patties and four slices of American cheese.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

In-n-out 3x3 Burger

The 4×4 deserves to be on the official menu if not only for the uniqueness of this burger. Getting four beef patties in one hamburger? How often does that happen?

Protein Style Burger

The protein-style burger is as simple as it gets. It’s like a regular burger sans the bun. The bun is instead replaced with lettuce.

Why It Needs to Be On the Menu

The protein-style burger is a wonderful option for those who prefer healthier choices at a fast-food restaurant.

One Last Note

In-N-Out is a popular fast-food restaurant and for good reason. Not only are their regular menu items tasty and worth every penny, but their secret menu items are also downright unique and delicious. Fast food restaurants are popular for several reasons. They make busy nights easier, introduce families to unique tastes, and offer excellent service. Popular fast-food restaurants allow families to enjoy a meal for a decent price, especially if they don’t feel like cooking that night. However, fast food restaurants can often be a tossup. History of Wendy’s

Wendy’s was the brainchild of Dave Thomas. He started the restaurant chain in 1969 when he couldn’t find a “good hamburger” in Columbus, Ohio. His idea brought us the delicious and unique square hamburgers and the simple name Wendy’s. (Named after his eight-year-old daughter Wendy.)

Signature Menu Items

One of the most popular signature items on the Wendy’s menu is undoubtedly the square hamburger. The toppings are customizable, making it possible to create the perfect hamburger. Additionally, Wendy’s is also known for their rich Frosties that can’t be found anywhere else. These aren’t the only delicious items found on the menu. Popular meals also include the spicy chicken sandwich, baconator, and the bacon double stack.

15 Reasons Wendy’s is the Best Fast Food Restaurant

Wendy’s takes the cake when it comes to fast food restaurants for several reasons. From their unique menu options to their quality and fresh ingredients. We are going to explore 15 reasons why Wendy’s is the best fast-food restaurant, topping even McDonald’s.

Fresh Ingredients

Wendy’s boasts having fresh never frozen beef, in order to bring customers top tier quality. Have you ever wondered why their burgers were square? Well Thomas believed that if customers could see the hamburgers hang outside of the bun, it’ll give them confidence that Wendy’s beef is always fresh.

Breakfast Menu Items

This dessert was dreamed up by Dave when he was looking for a dessert that was the perfect addition to Wendy’s meals. The thickness of the frosty means you can eat it with a spoon but if you prefer a straw, it’s smooth enough for that as well.

Customizable Toppings

Wendy’s sandwiches are perfectly customizable, which makes it easy to switch out ingredients that you don’t like, for those that you absolutely love. These customizable toppings include onions, lettuce, pickles, bacon, cheese, and tomatoes. When it comes to coffee drinkers, everyone has their preference, whether it is completely black or loaded with syrup and sugar. But one thing is for sure, the number one coffee chain in the United States is undoubtedly Starbucks. It truly has something for everyone. From their seasonal beverages to their cold brews to the food options, it’s hard to beat this chain. However, you may want to think twice before ordering these Starbucks menu items. They simply don’t make the cut like the chain’s more popular and delicious items. (Read: Bojangles Is Good But These 8 Fried Chicken Places Are Even Tastier.)

Don’t Buy: Blended Cold Brew Protein Shakes

Starbucks is known for its signature and delicious drinks, from Frappuccino to espressos. However, one drink that didn’t make the cut was their blended cold brew protein shakes. Several Redditors share that these drinks didn’t live up to the Starbucks name. Some even call it one of the worst drinks to buy here.

Instead Buy: Peppermint Mocha

If you are looking for a yummy treat right around the wintertime, try the peppermint mocha. This specialty drink comes highly recommended. It could be because of the distinct holiday flavor or because of the nostalgia that ensues. Whatever the case, the peppermint mocha is one of the more popular Starbucks’ menu items.

Don’t Buy: Glazed Donuts

The glazed donuts from Starbucks are a mixed bag. Some customers love them, but to others, they aren’t worth eating. One Redditor called it a ‘step up from a school donut.’ Meaning the freshness just wasn’t there and the aftertaste left something to be desired.

Instead Buy: Iced Lemon Pound Cake

If you are craving something sweet from Starbucks that isn’t in the form of a drink, try their iced lemon pound cake. Customers rave about it being the best lemon cake they have ever tasted. The cake is moist and lemony making every taste worth it.

Don’t Buy: Protein Boxes

In theory, the protein boxes sound like a good idea. However, the quality of these boxes has gone down in recent years. Additionally, they are marketed to be healthy but many of them are still pretty processed. Not to mention you aren’t really getting your money’s worth.

Instead Buy: Classic Whole-Grain Oatmeal

However, if you are looking for a good source of protein from your favorite Starbucks location, try the classic whole-grain oatmeal. You get a good dose of protein not to mention it is more delicious than the protein boxes.

Don’t Buy: Chai Frappuccino

Taking the distinct flavor of chai tea and adding in the overwhelming sweetness of a Frappuccino can either be a genius or a recipe for disaster. In this case, it is the latter. These drinks do not have enough spice carryover from chai, and they tend to be extremely sweet and concentrated. It’s better to just pass on these.

Instead Buy: Iced Caramel Macchiato

If you are craving sweetness, one of the more popular Starbucks menu items to try is the iced caramel macchiato. It combines just enough milk, caramel sweetness, and espresso to give you a pick me up.

Don’t Buy: Espresso Frappuccino

Asian woman in blue casual t-shirt holding a plastic glass of cold espresso Frappuccino with whipped cream on top and her orange nails. The premium coffee. Blended drinking and refreshment concept.

The espresso Frappuccino is a strong mixture of sweet Frappuccino flavor and rich espresso taste. This can be a bit overwhelming for those who aren’t used to strong flavors. The espresso flavoring though is said to be diluted and the smell of this drink is hard for some customers to get past.

Instead Buy: a Mocha Frappuccino

If you love Frappuccinos but aren’t feeling the espresso flavor, give the mocha Frappuccino a try. The chocolatey taste adds to the already sweet and condensed drink and can be exactly what one needs to quench that sweet tooth.

Don’t Buy: Breakfast Wraps

The Starbucks breakfast wraps are labeled some of the worst foods to buy at this chain. Some state that for what the wraps cost, the flavor is sorely lacking. The potatoes are not always cooked all the way, and it feels like there’s just so many potatoes, making it hard to eat.

Instead Buy: Spinach and Feta Wrap

Pancakes filled with spinach and cheese on the wooden surface.

If you want something delicious in the morning and healthier for you, try the spinach and feta wrap. While it is still high in sodium, this wrap is considered one of the chain’s “healthier” food options.

The spinach and feta wrap can be a great way to get your protein and some carbs to help you kickstart your day.

Don’t Buy: Grilled Cheese on Sourdough

Sometimes there’s nothing we need more than your run of the mill classic comfort foods. Grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food, however the grilled cheese on sourdough at Starbucks just isn’t where it’s at. While it can be a tossup, many customers agree you just never know whether or not it will be good. At some locations the half-melted cheese in the middle really ruins the meal.

Instead Buy: Italian -Style Ham and Salami Panini

Those who are fans of strong flavors may enjoy the Italian-style ham and salami panini. It comes with calabrese salami, slow roasted ham, spicy red peppers and more. The flavors are strong enough to give customers a savory taste in every bite. Added to the delicious crunch of the toasted bread, you have a sandwich that is far from mild.

One Last Note

Starbucks has grown to become one of the most popular coffee chains in the United States and the world. But it doesn’t just sell coffee. There are so many different options available here that it can be confusing what to order. You may want to think twice before ordering these Starbucks menu items off this list, for various reasons. Whether it’s because of the lack of nutrition, non-appetizing flavor, or being overly sweet. Instead, try items like the lemon pound cake or the iced caramel macchiato. After all, they are popular for a reason. (Read: Dunkin’ Has Great Donuts, But These 8 Alternatives Are Better.)

When it comes to chicken sandwiches, the United States has plenty of restaurants to choose from. However, the two that are always battling it out at the top are Chick-fil-A and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Both offer customers unique and savory flavors, juicy textures, and so much more. The consensus is clearly divided between the two, with some customers raving about Chick-fil-A. While others support of Popeyes chicken will never waiver. However, when it comes down to it there is only one clear winner. Here are 5 reasons why Popeyes chicken sandwiches are better than Chick-fil-A. (Read: Skip the McDonald’s Line and Make These 8 Copycat Recipes at Home.)

Chick-Fil-A History

Chick-Fil-A is a family-owned restaurant that is known for delicious chicken, being closed on Sundays, and staff that always says “my pleasure” instead of thanking you. But where exactly did this famous chicken chain get its start?

In 1946 Cathy Truett began a small restaurant with his brother Ben. The name The Dwarf Grill was the small catapult that Cathy Truett needed towards the success of Chick-fil-A.

Chick-Fil-A Was Born

22 years after The Dwarf House was started, Chick-fil-A was dreamed up. The very first one opened in Atlanta Georgia, in none other than a shopping center. Through the years the restaurant has grown in popularity due to its customer service, excellent chicken, and so much more.

Popeyes History

While Chick-fil-A is quite popular, and for good reason, Popeyes Chicken takes the cake when it comes to having the best chicken chain.

In order to become a top chicken restaurant in the United States, Popeyes had to have started somewhere. Its humble beginning started in Louisiana in 1972.

Popeyes Louisiana Chicken

The first Popeyes Chicken had a slightly different name, and that was Chicken on the Run. However, the restaurant wasn’t as big of a hit. Therefore, Alvin Copeland decided to rebrand. In 1976, Copeland opened the first Popeyes Chicken with a new name and a new spice.

Popularity of Chick-Fil-La

There’s no denying that Chick-fil-A has grown immensely popular over the years. In fact, according to Statista, this chain is the most popular chicken restaurant in the United States. In 2023, Chick-fil-A had 21,584 million dollars’ worth of sales. Putting it far ahead of the second-leading chicken chain. Which is, you guessed it, Popeyes Chicken.

Popularity of Popeyes

Since its beginning, Popeyes has increased incredibly in popularity. This is partly due to its unique Louisiana-inspired chicken, buttermilk biscuits, and catchy jingle.

According to Statista, Popeyes is the second leading chicken chain in the United States, with 5,511 million dollars in sales in 2023.

While Chick-fil-A does outpace Popeyes when it comes to sales, there’s still a very strong case to be made that Popeyes Chicken sandwich is far superior. Let’s take a look at why.

Chick-Fil-La Chicken Sandwich Taste

Sometimes when you eat chicken, it is overly spiced with quite a bit of kick to it. However, in Chick-fil-A’s case, their chicken can be described as mild. But don’t mistake mild for having no taste.

Chick-fil-A takes pride in using top-grade chickens for their recipes. Additionally, the chicken is cooked using a pressure cooker. This creates delicious chicken that is juicy and tender, fully cooked but not overcooked.

Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Taste

Popeyes Chicken has a flavor and taste that is different than any other chicken restaurant. For starters, many Redditors agree that Popeyes flavor is far superior to any chicken chain, even Chick-fil-A. Could it be the crispy outer layer? Or the juiciness as soon as you take a bite?

Popeyes marinates their chicken in a Louisiana seasoning from the very beginning. Though we don’t know every ingredient in their secret recipe. Whatever it is, it keeps customers coming back for more.

The Texture of Chick-fil-A Chicken

Chick-fil-A chicken is often described as tender, with the texture being crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Of course, if you order the grilled chicken, the juiciness pops.

The Texture of Popeyes Chicken

Popeyes Friend chicken has a heavier breading than Chick-Fil-A. Which means the texture is much crispier. This texture is achieved by soaking the chicken in a buttermilk. Then the batter is added, creating a very texture that crumbles like fried chicken but still keeps the chicken on the inside juicy.

Chick-Fil-La Spices

When it comes to the recipe of Chick-fil-A, only a select few know what goes into it. However, there are over 20 seasonings that bring a delicious flavor to one of America’s favorite chicken meals.

While we may never get a confirmation, there are many rumors stating that Chick-fil-A uses pickle juice to marinate their chicken. One reason this is such a strong rumor is because the flavor of the chicken can be described as vinegary or tangy.

Popeyes Spices

Popeyes Chicken uses Louisiana style seasonings and herbs. Though we don’t know exactly what goes into each bite of chicken, whatever it is, creates a savory flavor that has just enough kick to it. There’s not too much salt or too little.

Value of Chick-Fil-La Chicken

Another reason Chick-fil-A is so popular is because of their high standards for their chicken. Their first step to better chicken means only using chickens without antibiotics. Furthermore, instead of using ground chicken, they choose to use the whole chicken breast.

Value of Popeyes Chicken

Popeyes takes the value of their chicken very seriously. Quality is of the upmost importance to this restaurant. That is why they have a commitment to using cage free eggs and by eliminating the use of chicken that have been given antibiotics.

Overall Customer Satisfaction with Chick-fil-A

When it comes to customer satisfaction Chick-fil-A outranks the majority of American restaurants. With staff trained on how to be welcoming to their incredible efficiency, it can be difficult to beat Chick-fil-A in this area.

Overall Customer Satisfaction with Popeyes

Customer satisfaction with Popeyes chicken sandwich is just as high up as Chick-fil-A. Customers rave about how juicy and savory the flavor is. While also commenting on how it is difficult to beat the outer layer crunch. The one complaint that Popeyes does get though is with their actual customer service. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily play a part in how delicious their chicken sandwich is. (Although it does affect customer experience.)

Popeyes is the Clear Winner

While the consensus will always be divided between the two, one could make a very strong case that Popeyes is the clear winner. Chick-fil-A may have a flavorful chicken sandwich, Popeyes stands out for the extra kick they put in their spices and breading. Additionally, the texture of Popeyes chicken is one that stands out from the rest. The breading adds an extra thick layer and a crunch that is quite frankly, hard to find anywhere else.

Popeyes is exactly what one would want in a fried chicken sandwich.

For these reasons alone, Popeyes comes out on top. Of course, their commitment to value when it comes to the food they serve, is an added bonus. (Read: 7 Comfort Food Classics Cracker Barrel Should Immediately Add to Its Menu.)
